Escaping The Mafia King

Chapter 18: 18

"And what did you say?" Varys asked gently.
"I.. um. Accepted it?" Hope flinched a little after saying the words. Even though she was not doing anything wrong and definitely
was not cheating on anyone, it kind of felt wrong.
Varys, who most of the time remained chill and calm around her suddenly clenched his jaw tight in anger.
"What exactly do you think we are doing with each other, Hope?" He asked in a soft voice that betrayed the hidden anger behind
his words.
Hope stared into his eyes with barely contained emotions. She honestly did not know the answer to that. It felt like they were
friends, but the closeness behind that friendship screamed more than friends.
"What do you want me to say?" She whispered. She wanted him to calm down. Although she had seen him get angry plenty of
times, she did not like it when he got angry on her. It made her feel bad. Like she had done something very wrong.
Varys did not reply to her but the anger did not leave his eyes. He knew he had not given a name to their relationship. Never
acknowledged the closeness and given her a reason to refuse the offers coming her way but he did not know she did not even
realize the depth of emotions that he possessed for her.
"I..." He opened his mouth and almost let out a vile curse, but immediately stopped himself. Throwing a fist on the hood of the
car that made a loud bang, he walked away from there.
"Varys!" Hope immediately turned around and called out to him. But her voice fell to deaf ears as without turning around he got in
his car and drove away from there.
"Fucking hell!" Hector's irritated tone pulled her attention towards him, "Not again."
She looked at him with guilty expressions on her face even though it was not exactly her fault that Varys had left them stranded.
"Now who kicked his ass?" Hector asked.
Hope blinked at him with feigned innocence.
"I have to go somewhere." Hector glance backwards while talking to her. Hope's gaze went to where he was looking where she
saw Stella walking away with a guy. She was taking some pop music classes from the guy who was pretty famous locally. Not
even bad in looks to be honest. "Will you please get a cab or something?"

As soon as she nodded her head he turned around and ran away.
With a smile turned around and started walking home. Truthfully, she had forgotten her wallet at home and there was not even a
penny in her pocket. Her parents were away to work and she did not have keys to home since she was planning on going home
late. Varys had made plans of studying and hanging out together but that seemed like a lost option now.
Pulling out the cellphone out of her bag she dialled Varys' number. The phone kept ringing but he did not pick up. She tried again
but still no answer. Sighing in defeat she dialled her parents' number but she already knew that they had to leave their
cellphones out of the meeting room which could go on for hours. The cell rang but no answer came from other side except for
the automated voice message to call later.
Kicking a rock with her feet she decided to take the only option left. Walk four miles in strappy sandals in under the heating sun.
One mile forward she was heaving and sweating badly. The sun was even harsher than her expectation today. Her lack of
exercise obviously did not help.
She managed to walk three more miles with heaving breath and almost broken feet. The straps of sandals had left a bleeding
wound in the back of her feet, making them hurt badly.
As her home finally came into view after two hours of walking, she took a deep sigh in relief.
Walking into the cold grass of the garden in front of her house, she plopped down on the ground in fatigue. After her knees
stopped hurting a bit, she pulled open the straps of her sandals and threw the footwear aside, relishing the coldness that the
grass thankfully provided.
The sun had gone down so the heat had become dull but she still felt hot as hell. She was just glad that she had finally sat down
and her feet were touching some coldness. She was never ever going to leave her wallet at home again, she had decided.
Laying comfortably on the ground with her feet sprawled in front of her, she tugged at some grass and started rolling it around on
her finger.
Her eyes followed the ring that it made. Honestly, she felt like crying right now. She was so, so angry at Varys for leaving her
stranded. She actually would not have minded if she had her wallet on her and she had taken a cab but the pain in her legs just
made her angrier.
Second note to herself- never take a ride with Varys again.

"Hope?"
Name the devil and he appears in front of you.
Her eyes shot up to find Varys standing in front her with a confused expression on his face, "What are you doing out here?"
She gave him a faint smile, not wanting him to know that she was upset with him, "Nothing." She said softly, "Wassup? Why are
you here?"
She did not get up from her place. She did not have energy. Her head had kind of started to hurt and her feet were already
almost dead.
His eyes took her in carefully, trying to find something but unable to quite put a finger on what was wrong with her.
"I came to talk to you." He said gently, "I was a being dick earlier. Do you want to continue our plans? Hang out at Dusky's?"
She gulped down the feeling that filled her mouth. It was getting harder for her to hide her expressions from him, harder to not
cry. It hurts when your friend ditches you. But it bloody rips your heart out when you get ditched by the person that you consider
more than a friend.
"Don't worry about." She anchored her attention on the grass ring on the finger and dismissed him in a quiet tone as she could
manage, "It is all good. I got home okay. I just really don't feel like going out right now. I am sorry."
A horn of car snatched their attention. Her parents were home. Giving him one more small smile she got up on her feet and
walked towards her home while trying hard not to limp as her mom waved at her and her dad opened the main door of the
house.
