Down End Road

Chapter Epilogue

3 months later

Drip. Drip. Drip.

The order of Washington's holding cells were dark. Black walls, blacker than the colour black. Bars for the cells made of cool black steel, twisted eerily to guard whatever prisoner was unfortunate enough to be down here. Water dripped constantly from the ceiling.

Click. Click. Click.

Stairs carved out of stone clicked against the tiny heel of my kitten heeled boots. My dark blue suit couldn't protect me against the chilly draft that snaked through the material and wound around my skin, a permanent cold settled deep in my bones.

When I had asked to visit Denise Washington, I hadn't expected her to be in a haven but I had at least expected there to be heating. Although, I supposed when you were as powerful as we were, the consequences had to be tougher.

A maniac laugh abruptly boomed from the cell at the end of the dark row. It's wrought steel bars, resembled the teeth of a monster. "Miss Rose, come to see little old me?" Denise mocked, fake enthusiasm and innocence thrusted into her voice

"It's Remington now." I replied, no hint of offence in my voice. "And yes I have come to see you. Although, I wouldn't describe a primary source of much needed information, such as yourself, with a phrase quite like that." I mused. "I mean, a little old lady wouldn't be able to leap into the air like a freaking bat and try to kill the most powerful person in the world. Don't you think?" I asked, proceeding to sit on the stool I had dragged out of the corner.

Denise snorted throatily. "Where's boy toy?" She gibed again. I smiled wickedly, teeth flashing in the low light.

"Gone," I replied. "We headed our separate ways." My exterior was calm and composed and I mentally high fived myself for it. However, I could feel my soul wilt a little at the mention of Alex. I missed him terribly, but knew this was the best decision for now.

"Now why would the queen," Denise said, her chains scraped along the stone floor. "Banish her Prince, when we both know, he wouldn't of gone without you pushing him away." Denise finished, finally standing in the dim glow of the candlelight.

My shock was too great to mask completely. She was not the same woman I had met five months ago. Her face, usually serene and cunning, was screwed up in an expression of malice and madness. Hair normally perfect, now askew and sticking out every which way. She still wore her gown from the ball, to my evidential surprise.

"Don't be too surprised." Denise cooed sarcastically. Madness shone in her brown eyes like a bond fire. "They offered me certain amenities, but I refused. You don't know what they're putting in your soap." She whispered conspiratorially.

I stared at her blankly, mild disgust clouding my mind at the idea of not showering for months on end. "Stop talking Denise, and start listening." I finally said, authority clear in my voice. The woman pursed her lips in annoyance, and pinned her glare to me.

"Who, did you work for?" I asked. "When Ben missed my heart but a couple inches, he said 'they' which implies more than one person." I recited, shoving down the shudder that threatened to rattle my spine.

"Ever think he was just trying to keep my gender anonymous." She said, her eyes a little frantic.

My eery smile turned into a grin upon noticing this. "No, I don't think so." I replied, leaning down on my parted legs.

"Not a very Queenly stance, don't ya' think." She distracted, brown eyes still frantic with panic.

"How I sit before a prisoner, in a dungeon, in an entirely different dimension, is hardly relevant to my status. Don't ya' think." I added throwing her words back at her.

Denise flinched, hands started to shake jerkily.

"Now, tell me, what organisation, wants me dead?" I interrogated. That same cruel smile still plastered to my face. I had spent an hour in the car psyching myself up for this when I had first arrived at Harkness manor, but she didn't need to know that.

"Screw. You." She spat between gritted teeth.

I chuckled. "Fine then. Perfectly fine, now I don't have to go through the hassle of changing your sentence, gathering your family, informing the public. Actually now that I think about it, that would have probably been more hassle than its worth." I said thoughtfully. "Well, thanks for helping me to see the light." I thanked dramatically, standing from my stool.

"Wait!" She panicked, arms outstretched beyond the bars. "Wait! How many years, how many?" Denise asked.

I paused, my back still to her, turning back around, I hid my triumphant smile. "Fifteen, ten on good behaviour." I announced. Her evident relief at hearing this, made me feel like a horrible person.

"I'll give you a name, anything more and they'll kill me." She bartered, her tone serious and without madness. I nodded. "Descendit cum monarchia." Denise sighed. "DCM for short."

I took in the words. "Uninventive. Down with the monarchy, in Latin. I would at least expect my assassins to have an original name." I gibed, tucking away the information. The society only used Latin and greek translations, which meant there was a high possibility we had a mole.

"I'll talk to some people about your sentence." I informed, turning on my heel to leave.

"Wait... Chad?" Denise asked morosely, probably still coming to terms with the fact that he hated her.

"He's heartbroken." I answered, before moving back up the stairs.

My comment must have sparked some bitterness in her black soul as she started yelling, "they'll kill him you know!It wasn't hard to figure out Alex was the Prince, they already know what he is to you and THEY WILL KILL HIM."

Her deluded cries continued to boom out across the room. I felt my muscles squeeze. My whole body halted on the last step, Denise's psychotic ramblings never pausing.

"I know." I whispered, a tear slipped down my tan cheek. "That's why he's in California." I added quietly. Her yelling overlapped my gentle mournful whisper. "I love him too much to be the cause of his death." I admitted, before opening the prison's door, and being escorted by two moon white shifters, back to the Portal door.
