Chapter 11
We all filed into the ballroom, where several long tables with benches were set up along the length of the room. The food station right under the marble mezzanine, tables were filled with aromatic food and students had already formed a cue.
Me and Ally walked in together talking away, that is before Maverick Landon came and smugly interrupted us. “Myra, good to see you have made a new friend already,” he said sarcastically. “And good to see you with your necklace on you know those things just get lost so easily,” he continued his egotistical expression unnerved me. I scrunched up my face into the ugliest smile.
“Don’t you have, I don’t know... friends or something, you know someone else you can go bother.” I said. He put his hand over his heart in mock offence.
“Of course I do, but why go bother them when I can bother you.” He said. He draped his arm over my shoulder. I looked over to Ally for support, but she was completely frozen, her eyes were wide and her mouth was slightly open.
A swell of relief, bloomed in my chest when someone from behind us suddenly called Mavericks name. Several heads turned toward me or more accurately Maverick as a tall and built boy walked over to us.
He had dark brown curly hair shaved at the sides but fluffed on top. His dark brown skin looked soft and he had a small scar right at his hairline. His eyes were big and brown and his lips were full with a tint of pink. His defined jaw-line was severe and extremely attractive. All in all, he was one of the most handsome people I had ever met.
“Ah so this is where you ran off to, I thought we were meeting up at the doors,” he said, his voice was low and his British accent was all the more charming. Maverick waved him off.
“Sorry English, but I was just talking to Myra here, it’s her first year here and I just wanted to welcome her. Alex meet the infamous Myra Remington.”
He said. I shoved off his arm then turned my head toward Alex. I stuck out my hand to shake his but he ignored me and stared at me with utter indifference.
I let out a low sigh under my breath then started speaking. “Um... Nice to meet you?” I said, trying in vain to break the awkward silence. Alex looked like he was thinking about something.
“I’m sorry, um... Maverick can I talk to you for a sec.” Alex said, his accent making every syllable sound enticing. I looked at him like he had two heads, then to Maverick.
“Sure dude, Myra I assume we will be seeing you and...?” His gaze fell on Ally and I had to shove her out of her haze just to get her to respond. She nodded her head then remembering the question practically screamed her name.
“Ally! My names Ally.” She said her eyes going wider by the second. She beamed a lovesick puppy-like smile and I instantly made the connection between her strange behaviour and Maverick.
“Yeah, Ally here um... She came over from Texas and well she was up late driving and stuff so she’s just you know experiencing the aftereffects of too much caffeine and not enough sleep.” I explained smoothly, although thinking about it, it could have been entirely true.
She nodded her head nervously, and smiled again. “Yeah well, Maverick can we go talk now.” Alex said, taking one last skeptical glance of me before pulling Maverick to the back of the dinner cue.
I shook my head then walked further into the cue. I looked up and saw a group of girls looking at me like I just stole their loli-pop. I recognised the two girls in the centre of the crowd, as Genevieve and Heidi Leviticus.
Their faces were twisted in the most scornful expressions I had ever seen on a teen. I walked nervously through the crowd, their hateful glare never leaving me.
“Um, Ally now might be a good chance to catch me up on Alexander Griffin and Maverick, I think those girls over there are about two seconds away from ripping out my hair.” I said my voice dying into a humourless laugh at the end. She shook her head and came out of yet another haze.
“Not before you tell me what’s going on between you and Hamilton's most eligible bachelors.” She said crossing her arms and raising an eyebrow. I rolled my eyes and made a gagging sound.
“What do you mean, I only just met that Alex guy, who if you haven’t noticed is extremely rude and the same goes for Maverick who is as smug as a kid is hyper after eating five bowls of coco puffs.” I stated, feeling the frustration boil up inside of me. I rubbed my necklace between my two fingers, trying to let out some of my irritation through the small and instinctual action.
“Okay, I believe you, however you might want to come up with another explanation when the little missy’s over there come and interrogate you about it.” She warned.
I felt the overwhelming urge, to roll my eyes again, but settled with a small smile instead. “Okay drama queen, thanks for the warning but at this point I just want to get some food.” I said.
