Chapter |16|
I've been staring at the same paperwork for hours. But I can't seem to get anything done knowing the crucial information brewing inside me.
Titan is gone
I woke up in a foggy state a few hours ago. The top of my head was wrapped in a bandage and my dad was at my bedside. He informed me there was an incident and a witch posing as a human stole my wolf. She still hasn't been caught and that's why we're on lockdown.
I'm so frustrated and angry. I'm an alpha I need a wolf. Titan was a part of me. Now he's gone and I feel like a part of me has been ripped away. I can't even remember the last time I was this distraught, maybe when my mom died.
Besides losing my wolf I also have temporary amnesia. Dad said I hit my head pretty hard when the witch attacked me. The last thing I remember is planning a vacation with Matt and Lance. Now I don't even remember if we went or not.
I've been trying to get ahold of my best friends but it's difficult since I don't have my wolf and can't mind-link. My phone is missing and I called them from my office but neither of them answered. Dad said they're away on business but wouldn't they return if they heard about what happened to me?
Without my friends or wolf, I'm stuck doing paperwork and wondering what to do with my life. My friends are busy, my wolf is missing and I feel like I'm forgetting something important but can't figure out what.
My dad is off preparing for a meeting. My annoying cousin Alpha Scott is supposed to be here any minute now to discuss business. His presence has always irked me because he's super competitive and smug about it but now I just feel a deep hatred for him but have no idea why.
Sighing I stare at more paperwork when my office door opens. My dad walks in with Scott right behind him. They sit in the two seats across from me.
"So Kai how's it going?" Scott asks and I try to growl but nothing comes out angering me more.
"How do you think I'm doing? My wolf is gone and I have to look at your ugly face now!"
Dad narrows his eyes at me. "Calm down Kai. Scott is here to discuss business. Put your personal issues aside and be the respectful alpha I raised you to be."
Scott clears his throat before speaking. "I'm sorry about your wolf I didn't know." he quickly glances at my dad and then back at me. "But I'm here because I brought Anastasia. She's willing to mate with you."
My jaw drops. "What?"
Dad growls. "Remember we agreed you would take a choice mate. You're fated mate rejected you that's why you were weak enough for a witch to take Titan away."
"I-I don't remember this."
"You wouldn't," Dad argues. "It happened recently and your memory's a bit fuzzy. Now let's discuss business. It's late so Anastasia is asleep but we should be able to pull together a Luna ceremony for her by lunch. Her and Kai could mate quickly before." he tells Scott who nods in agreement.
"Later today? That's very sudden." I interrupt.
Dad shakes his head. "Nonsense, the sooner the better. Scott brought her all the way here from his pack just for you," he answers and then continues to talk to Scott about his plans to strengthen our packs.
I sit back in my chair wondering if I can get out of this situation. I've always wanted to wait for my fated mate. Why did my mate reject me? Whoever she is I don't even remember her name.
If this Anastasia wolf is to be my mate then I need more time. I can't just agree to spend the rest of my life with some woman I barely know. Are we even compatible? Will Titan feel betrayed I made this decision without him when he comes back? This just feels so wrong.
"I can't do it," I say loudly getting my dad and Scott's attention.
"Can't do what?" my dad asks narrowing his brown calculating eyes at me again.
"Mate with this Anastasia. I at least should get to know the wolf I'm going to spend the rest of my life with. Can't we wait a month so we can go on a few dates?" I ask my dad.
"No. This happens now. We don't have time to waste you're-
"I'm not mating with her until Titan is back! I can't mark her anyway without my wolf." I stand up showing just how serious I am as my dad and I stare each other down.
"Fine." Dad groans. "I'll figure out how to get your wolf back in-"
Before my dad can finish his sentence my office door suddenly swings open revealing one of our pack warriors named Brett. "Intruders have been spotted on the territory. We're starting a search now," he states making my dad growl.
"Damn it! I have enough going on now!" he says standing up and leaving the room in a hurry.
Scott stands up also and I follow behind him when he turns around putting up his hands to stop me. "What are you doing Kai?"
"I'm going to help find the intruders."
Scott shakes his head. "You can't it's too dangerous."
I scoff. "Please I'm stronger than you."
"Not without Titan you're not. Just stay in here until someone comes to tell you it's clear." He growls and then leaves the room in a hurry.
I slam the door behind him cursing today. It's midnight and instead of sleeping, I'm having a meeting with my asshole cousin about a mate I don't want and dealing with intruders. The worst part is I can't even help.
What kind of alpha am I?
After pacing the floor in my office for about fifteen minutes I decide to go take a look for myself. I can't just keep standing around feeling sorry for myself. Even before I got my wolf I was tough. We train in both forms because of situations like this where your wolf could be temporarily injured. I can do this.
I puff out my chest and leave my office. I walk down the empty hallway looking for anything odd. I can hear everyone around the many floors below me and someone shouting orders. Whoever they're looking for they still haven't found.
Heading towards my bedroom to grab my pocket knife I see a shadow dart into a room. I don't think it's a pack member so I head that way with a smile on my face. I'm going to catch the intruder myself and prove I'm still a fit alpha.
I hear someone rummaging around the room. I stand outside the closed door waiting for them to exit. As soon as the door opens I grab them by the throat and push them back inside. They scratch at my hand but I only squeeze harder and slam them against the wall.
"Kai please," they beg.
"Who are you and why are you trespassing on my territory?"
"I'm here for you. It's me, Avery," she says and my eyes finally adjust to the dark room. I let her go and look her up and down cautiously.
I can't believe this.
