Chapter 32 We Kept Meeting The Scumbag Couple
"You shouldn't always think about work. You're just a girl, you don't need to work so hard."
My mom knew that I was very serious about work, so she didn't doubt my excuse and looked at me with concern.
"I know. Mom, I will take care of myself. You don't have to worry about me."
I gave her a faint smile and felt a little guilty.
The operation was scheduled for the afternoon, so I spent the whole morning in the ward talking with my father. I felt like crying when I saw his greying hair.
"Hollie, what's going on between you and Vaughn? Why was the wedding suddenly cancelled?"
After chatting with my father for a while, my mother pulled me aside and began to ask about Vaughn.
Previously, I'd just called them to tell them that the wedding was cancelled, but I didn't tell them the specific reason because I didn't want them to be angry about it.
"Nothing. I just felt that we didn't really fit, so we cancelled the wedding."
Hearing Vaughn's name, my heart trembled slightly. I looked at my mother with a guilty look.
It was over between me and Vaughn, so I didn't want my parents to fret over me because of that jerk.
"You are lying to me. You're my daughter, I know you well. You've loved Vaughn for so many years, you wouldn't feel like that right before the wedding. Are you hiding something from me?"
My mom knew my personality. I always hid the bad news from them purposely, so she didn't believe my explanation.
She also knew how much I liked Vaughn before. I had been looking forward to our wedding. The sudden cancellation was not only suspicious to my parents, anyone who knew us would be suspicious too.
Under my mother's repeated questioning, I could only tell her that Vaughn cheated on me with Laney and even had a child with her.
"He's gone too far! How could he do this to you? Hollie, you must have been blind to have had a relationship with a man like that!"
Hearing this, my mother immediately stood up in anger.
"Mom, don't be angry. It's all in the past now. It's not worth getting angry over such a person."
Seeing my mother's angry expression, I quickly took her hand and comforted her.
At the thought of Vaughn, I felt nothing but disgust in my heart. Maybe I've really let go of him.
"I'm not angry, I'm just worried that you would be sad. You two have been together for so long, after all. You were really in love with him, but he did this to you. What a jerk!"
My mother looked at me with a distressed look and sighed.
"Mom, it's all over. Don't take it to heart. I'll ask the doctor about my father."
I patted my mother's shoulder and changed the subject.
Walking out of the ward, I took a deep breath and walked to my father's attending doctor's office.
The doctor told me that my father was in a great shape, so the operation would have lesser risk. Hearing this, I felt less anxious.
I bought some lunch near the hospital. When I walked to the door, I happened to meet Evie, who was rushing over.
Evie wanted to come with me in the morning, but her boss didn't let her take the day off, so she could only come to see me at noon.
We went to the hospital together, but Laney's voice came from behind.
"Hollie Hunter."
Evie and I stopped at the same time and looked back. Laney was holding Vaughn's arm and swaggering toward us.
It had been a long time since I saw these two people, and I knew that there was nothing good about it when Laney stopped me, so I didn't want to talk to her. I grabbed Evie and turned to leave. However, Laney wasn't going to let me go so easily. I had barely taken two steps with Evie when her sarcastic voice came from behind again.
"Hollie, why are you in such a hurry to leave when you see us? We're old friends, after all, you should greet us."
Knowing that Laney was deliberately targeting me, I was annoyed, but I didn't want to argue with her. My father was going to have an operation in the afternoon, so I didn't want to get into any trouble at this time.
However, Evie was a hot-tempered person. She grabbed me, turned around, and glared at Laney.
"Look who it is, it's the homewrecker! What, now that you've gotten the man, you're here to brag?"
Evie looked at Laney with disdain. Her words were merciless. I could clearly see that Laney's face immediately changed. She angrily glared at Evie.
"Evie Stokes, this is between me and Hollie. Why are you sticking your nose where it doesn't belong?"
Laney looked at Evie angrily. She was very dissatisfied with Evie coming out to protect me every time.
"Hollie's business is my business. Yes, I'm sticking my nose in this. I just don't like mean and shrewd women like you. Vaughn Jarvis must be blind to choose a woman like you!"
Laney was mean, but Evie wasn't an easy target to bully either. She put both her hands on her hips, went up to Laney, and pointed a finger at her. Her expression was disdainful, as if Laney was just dirt at the bottom of her shoe.
Without saying a word, I fixed my eyes on Vaughn's face. When he saw my gaze, his face became a little unnatural.
Laney, who was already enraged, became paler when she heard Evie's words. She stretched out her hand and tried to hit her. I was stunned, and watched Evie worriedly.
I thought that Evie would definitely be hit. I was a little anxious, but it would be too late for me to stop her now.
However, Evie seemed to be prepared for it. When Laney's hand was still in the air, it was tightly held by her, and her face was full of anger.
"Laney, who do you think you are? How dare you hit me!"
Evie coldly said these words and forcefully shook off Laney's hand. However, this was not the end. She raised her other hand and slapped Laney.
The loud slap rang in our ears. Laney's head was tilted to the side due to the force of the slap, and her cheek had a red handprint.
Everyone present, except for Evie, was stunned, including me. I didn't expect that Evie would hit Laney. This was beyond our expectations.
Laney was stunned. When she came back to her senses, the expression on her face became a little distorted. "Evie, who do you think you are? How dare you hit me!" Laney glared at Evie and her voice became sharp. Her shrill voice attracted the attention of many people around us.
