D.N.A: Does Not Assimilate

Chapter Fifteen

A little while later she was escorted into one of the offices of the hospital, one that she was fairly certain she hadn't been to before today. A tiny Hispanic or was she Latino?-woman sat behind the desk, deep brown hair swept up into a bun atop her head and doe-brown eyes. She waved to the guards. "You can leave us now."

Both bowed out of the office.

Niyota frowned. "You're not my doctor."

Smiling softly at the teenage girl who had been shown into the office, she came to stand up from the chair and walked around the corner of her desk. Coming to stand in front of the girl she extended her hand out to her, but when it went ignored she allowed it to drop at her side. "No. I'm Lenna Hernandez. As the most reputable specialist in my field, Dr. Wenchell called me in to help on your case." "What field is that?" she asked.

"Hypnotherapy," the doctor supplied.

She groaned in frustration at the woman's answer. "You've got to be shittin' me. Now these people are enforcing hypnosis on me, to get the answers they want." She nodded. "It seems that way."

Niyota snorted in derision at this realization, having thought after the bone structure scan she would be free of their continued experimentation. Obviously not. "Fine. I'll do this. It's not as if I really have a choice either way. I'm gonna warn you now though, the results won't be any different than all the other testing."

"Why don't you take a seat?" Dr. Hernandez suggested as she motioned a hand to the deep burgundy brocade couch to one side of the room, taking a perch on the end cushion. Settling back into the comforts of the cushion and crossing her legs, she calmly waited for Niyota to walk across the room and sit down. "Before we begin, let me assure you that I'm not interested in what anyone believes. I'm not here to prove them right and you wrong or vice versa. All I'm interested in is unlocking the memories in your mind. They'll tell me the real story."

"Fair enough," she said. At least the woman hadn't immediately deemed her insane, believing like everyone else that she had fantasized about her being the real Niyota. She was open to the idea. It's all she ever wanted.

She patted her thigh tenderly. "Okay Niyota," she was surprised that the woman had actually referred to her by name, rather Jane Doe. "Your Niyota till we prove otherwise," she said, as if reading her thoughts. "Now I need you to completely clear your mind of all thought and memory and open your mind to me."

"Okay."

Once she had accomplished the task that Dr. Hernandez had asked of her, she stuck her hand in her pocket and pulled out a gold stopwatch. "I want you to look at the watch," she said, beginning to gently swing it back and forth in front of her eyes. "Keep your eyes on the dial. Move with it." For several minutes Niyota followed the gold pocket watch back and forth, switching eyes with its movements, feeling groggier the longer she did. "You're beginning to feel sleepy, your body is weighed down."

"Yes," she rasped thickly.

Hernandez smiled. "Go to sleep now."

Realizing that she suddenly felt very sleepy, as she hadn't felt less than thirty seconds before, Niyota lay down on the arched back of the couch and passed out. When she finally came to again it was to find she was lying in her bed-in her bedroom on the main floor of the hospital ward-having no idea what had happened. Her mind was a complete blank. Niyota wondered what had happened during the hypnotherapy, what had her memories shown to Dr. Hernandez. Those were answers that would forever remain a mystery to her. She never saw Dr. Hernandez again. Though by the confounded glances that she received from the staff, especially Dr. Wenchell, she had little doubt of what those findings were. Once again his test had backfired, proving that she was Niyota. What a shocker! Not.

The dreams started. As if the hypnosis therapy with Dr. Hernandez had unlocked some door inside of her mind, allowing her to see what had been concealed from her before.

That night Niyota walked into her private bedroom in the upstairs ward, Dr. Wenchell deciding that she had stayed in isolation for long enough. About damned time. It'd only taken him nine days to figure that out. Pushing those thoughts out of her mind, feeling incredibly tired for some reason, she patted across the room and crawled into the bed. Tucking the lightweight blanket up over her shoulders and rolling over on her side her good one-Niyota laid her head down and closed her eyes. She was instantly asleep.

The nightmare came then.

Opening her eyes, hands grabbing hold onto either side of her head, Niyota moaned as a migraine ripped through her mind. Felt like her skull was splitting in half. "What the hell?" she gasped, finding the scratchy and raw voice strange and unfamiliar to her own ears.

What had happened?

Had she blacked out?

Guessing that to be the explanation for what had happened, she started to climb from where she lay in the forest, but was pulled up short. Hands brushed across smooth metal, not grass. Wondering what this could mean for her, Niyota glanced around at her surroundings and had to bite down on the terrified yelp of help that threatened to surface. She was lying on the smooth metal floor of a circular chamber, dark, the only source of light came from the strange symbols lit up white around her. Symbols she'd never seen before.

Oh god, where was she?

What had happened?

Suddenly the wall-no a door she realized-opened up on its own accord like a circular wheel and two people walked into the darkened chamber. Niyota tried to see them, but couldn't beyond the shadows. "Hello? Somebody please help me? I need to get home?"

A strange clicking came.

The new arrivals stepped directly in the light of the symbols that glowed down on her, allowing her to get a better view of them. Then she wished she hadn't. She released an ear-piercing scream. Niyota flung herself back, scooting as far away from them as her weakened condition allowed her to, as they came fully within her line of sight. No, not people. It couldn't be possible. But no matter what, the vision remained. These were beasts. Creatures. Both of them stood abnormally tall —like seven feet or so—with bodies made of scales and metal, snake-like hair that seemed to have a life of its own and the biggest, roundest, blackest eyes she'd ever seen.

"Someone, please help me!"

No help came.

Niyota continued to scream, fighting them off to the best of her ability, but none of her fighting back could save her from what was soon to come. Quickly overpowering her with a strength she found astonishing, taking hold of her legs, she was carelessly dragged out of the circular chamber. "NO!" she screamed.

Shooting straight up in the middle of her bed, Niyota fought off the hands to the best of her ability, all the while screaming for help that never came. Wide-eyed and mouth gaping open, she experienced a terror she had never known before, desperate to escape the creatures that had abducted her.

The door to her bedroom suddenly burst open-which only served to renew her screams of panic-and a blur of movement raced across the floor. "It's okay sweetie," a soft, gentle spoken voice came to her from afar as if through a long tunnel. "No reason to be afraid. It's just a dream."

Panicked eyes looked up. "It's real."

Motioning to someone who must've come in the room too, the woman took whatever had been handed to her and a needle pricked her arm. "No, sweetie, it's just a dream. Now why don't you lie down and try to get some rest? There's no reason to be afraid. You're safe."

Lying back down on the mattress as the sedative slowly made her tired and groggy, Niyota curled up into a tight ball underneath the blankets. She alone knew the truth. The nightmare had been real. The fear she had felt hadn't been faked. It seemed she had finally received an answer to all of her problems, the memories of those lost months had returned to her. At least one had. Showing her the truth. That had been a memory. A memory of her captivity. The one memory made her wonder. Did she really want to know what happened?

Two days later she came.

Niyota was sitting in the rec room with Jessie and some of the girls that she befriended, spending their time coloring-for all the things to do when a knock came at the door. "Jane Doe," the guard Paul said from the doorway. "Come on. You have a visitor."

Immediately putting aside the crayons and coloring books at the man's announcement, she walked across the floor and followed him out the door. As he escorted her through the hospital ward, Niyota wondered who had taken the time out of their day to come visit her at the hospital. Since her arrival at Greenwood, only Detective Gerald had ventured out to see her. Probably due to the fact that she didn't know anyone else to visit, at least not as far as either the Y'Fell family or the local authorities were concerned. No one believed her story.

Outside of the conference room door Paul immediately pulled her to a stop, placing a hand on the doors to keep her from going inside. He stared down at her warningly. "I want you to be on your best behavior, do you hear me? You are to remain five feet from the visitor at all times."

Niyota nodded. "I'll be good."

He stepped back and she went inside.

It was her.

The fake Niyota.

Waiting until the door to the conference room had closed, though she knew that a guard waited close by in case this got out of hand, Niyota glared her down. "What are you doing here?"

Her replica shrugged, casually nonchalant about her presence there. "Ah ya know, the usual. I thought it about time that I came and saw the girl making such allegations about me."

"Allegations?" she hissed, suddenly growing very angry and stormed across the room. She felt short of the end of the table, not wanting to be accused of causing the girl any harm, knowing that it would only confirm their beliefs. "You may have everyone else buying into this little innocent act of yours, but don't think for an instant I do. The both of us know you to be the imposter that you are."

"I am Niyota," she insisted.

"No you're not," she growled back.

Her imposter calmly rolled her shoulders and leaned forward. "No matter who's telling the truth, it doesn't make a difference. The fact remains that everyone believes me when I tell them I'm Niyota and you're merely a delusional nutcase they're forced to lock away."

Niyota glared at her from across the table, wanting nothing more at that moment than to reach across the table and rip her heart out. She was surprised by the vehemence and anger, neither of which she'd ever possessed before, but losing everything tended to change people. "I know what you are and I won't let you get away with this."

She laughed. "We'll see about that."

"I won't," Niyota vowed. "If it's the last thing that I ever do in this life, I will find a way to prove my innocence and you for the monster that you really are."

"Good luck," imposter-Niyota snickered.

Then calling for the guards, both of them immediately stepped into the conference room and took note of the scene that awaited inside. Relieved to see that nothing untoward had happened during their absence, knowing that the patient had been on good behavior. "Goodbye," her replica said. "I wish you the best of luck and hope that one day you come to terms with your illness." "Never!" she spat in disgust.
