Chapter 54
RYAN
I played another round of pool with Tristan to clear my head.
"What's so bad about sharing your companion? I mean, you have two options. You can be happy with her by running into that demon every now and then, or you have to live with the fact that you're killing an innocent person... Well, I would really have pangs of conscience." Said Tristan and was probably convinced I should call off the action.
'You've chosen the best advisor in the world. Great. KILL THE GUY,' Onyx demanded, his mind already made up.
"You share Maya... It's not like I'm just running into him. It's not like he keeps his hands to himself so I can say 'they're just meeting', it goes on Tristan. Her bond with him automatically demands it, she can't resist it. I mean, she can't stand being in the same room with him and me for ten minutes..." I said with a sigh and made the next move.
Tristan rolled his eyes with a grin "It's not that bad... I bet if you asked Maya, she'd be one hundred percent up for a threesome in bed too. Let alone two companions you're tied to. I'm surprised she hasn't dragged you into bed yet." Tristan let out a giggle. He was much more relaxed when it came to his bedtime stories. He and Maya were also very creative when it came to their preferences.
"Me, in the same bed with the demon? With the same companion?" I raised my eyebrows.
'I'm going to puke...' Onyx commented.
Tristan shrugged, 'Why not? Especially since you have no other choice. I mean, Ilay's been alive for over a thousand years. Do you think this Helena will be able to just lock him up just because you hand her a heart? I even wonder how much you can trust her when she has her ex-husband's mistress and a warlock locked up.... What if she's the bad guy underneath it all? I don't even want to know how bad Catherine will be, especially since she has to absorb all these feelings."
Why did Tristan always have to have the right words in stock? He made me doubt Helena too and see the situation from a different perspective.
I remember too well how Ilay tore me apart in the forest the first time I met him.
I bit my lower lip.
"You're also forgetting why Eleonora is helping us... If we hadn't hidden her from her coven back then, she'd probably be dead now. I didn't want to get involved back then because I wasn't a beta at the time, but I can bet you that my predecessor had the hots for Eleonora and that was the only reason he persuaded your father to take her in," Tristan added.
I nodded and ran my fingers through my hair. "I think a good-humored Ilay is better than a depressed Catherine, considering her history..." Tristan could be like a waterfall when he first started talking.
"Okay, Tristan, I get it. Why don't you tell me what you think is positive about my idea, give me reasons why I should make him disappear..."
Tristan raised his eyebrows "Let's be honest, Ryan. There's no upside for you. You'd have a powerful demon on your opposite side who can probably take you down faster than you can take him down, a companion who will never speak to you again... You have no advantage.
I understand that you're against the relationship between Catherine and Ilay, but you really are better off with him than without..."
Tristan made his point perfectly clear and I knew he was right too.
'Bloody beta,' Onyx growled.
'That's what a beta is for, to stop me from doing stupid things,' I said to Onyx, who was visibly annoyed and only saw red.
I took a deep breath and had another glass of bourbon.
"Hey, look on the bright side. At least now you have a valid reason to drink." Tristan winked at me and raised his glass. "To your threesome," he said.
I laughed and shook my head. "Fours..." I added.
He choked while drinking and was forced to cough. "Foursome?" he asked me, confused.
I nodded slightly "She's pregnant..." I said, biting my lower lip.
"Oh, that's why Cynthia ran all over the house like a madwoman..." he said, grabbing his beard.
Suddenly he grinned broadly "Congratulations!" he said and hugged me unexpectedly.
I returned the hug "Thank you..." I said quietly and bit my lower lip again.
"You see... the whole universe is against this idea. A stressed mom is not a good mom. Don't do this to Catherine... Please" he said almost too desperately.
I nodded slightly "Yes, you're right.... Thanks for the game."
He patted my shoulder "You can handle it... Demon or not, with you Catherine has the whole sex package, this guy can't compete." Tristan teased me with a grin."
I let out a snort and had missed being among my wolves for a long time.
"Thanks, Tristan, I really appreciate that."
"That's what friends are for." he said with a smile and nodded me over to the door "I'd suggest you go back to her." he said.
I nodded and walked out of the room with him.
I walked to my office for a moment and took care of some business. When I looked at the clock, it was already twenty-two o'clock.
I looked out of the window. The whole landscape was now white, covered in snow. Maya had already decorated the garden. Everything was decorated with fairy lights and it looked intoxicating.
I kept remembering my mother's words. December is dedicated to the family. She was also always against war and unrest. She was always convinced that problems could ALWAYS be solved differently... If only she knew... Sometimes I missed the presence of my parents. It was always easier to ask them for advice.
I looked up at the moon and saw another shooting star fly by.
'Eleonora?'
'Yes?' she asked me.
'Tell Helena that I've made up my mind... 'I'm not going to do it. I can't do it,' I said to her.
'That's a good decision, Alpha,' she finally said.
I bit my lower lip. I could only hope that the situation with Ilay wouldn't escalate one day.
'Ilay?'
'Mannnn you always catch every stupid moment. What?' he said, annoyed.
'Wow, calm down, you told me to get in touch when I'm ready again,' I frowned. What was he doing now?
'You're interrupting us in the middle of a movie, arrgh. One... Two ... Three'
I snapped and landed in the living room with Ilay, on the sofa.
I shook my head, laughing, "Thanks for the soft landing." I said to him and caught sight of Catherine snuggled up to Ilay.
I raised my eyebrows, but the words stuck in my throat. She sat straight up. I shook my head "Just stay..." I said and sat down next to her.
She looked at me uncertainly. "I'm serious." I finally said.
Ilay also looked at me with irritation and shrugged her shoulders. Catherine hesitated, but finally leaned against him again.
So that I didn't feel like a complete idiot, I picked up her legs and placed them over my lap. I gently massaged her calves and noticed how tense her whole posture was.
"Wow... that's service." Catherine said and looked over at me. She smiled at me.
I nodded slightly "Anything for you..." I said with a smile and looked over at the TV.
Ilay, on the other hand, played with her hair "Do you think he'll massage my legs too if I hold one out to him?" He asked with a gain.
I rolled my eyes, "I guess you'd like that."
Catherine giggled and looked at me apologetically.
"You don't need to be ashamed of that fool," I said with a smile.
We finally concentrated on the movie again.
It was getting late and Catherine had fallen asleep on Ilay's chest.
"I'll sleep here tonight for all I care, so we don't wake her up." Ilay said.
I looked at him, frowning: "Excuse me? Not in this life." I said and stood up carefully, lifting her legs. I carefully grabbed Catherine from his arms and picked her up like a bride.
"Spoilsport..." Ilay grumbled and ran after me to her room.
He opened the door for me and I went into the room with her and put her down on her bed.
At least I tried to lay her down.
She wrapped her arms around my neck in her sleep and hugged me tightly "Don't leave me alone..." She murmured in her sleep.
I stroked her hair gently and sat down on the bed with her in my arms.
'Well Ilay... You heard her. Take off,' I said to him and grinned.
He rolled his eyes 'What was that again? Not in this life?' he finally said and made himself comfortable on the other side of the bed.
'Is this supposed to be a family bed? Father, mother, child and fifth wheel?' I said annoyed and sighed softly.
He shrugged his shoulders, 'They call it co-parenting these days. He tried to stifle a laugh, biting his hand.
I leaned back and sighed softly.
Then that was the way it was. Catherine, Ilay and me in the same bed...
'Idiot,' Onyx grumbled and disappeared again.
I gazed into the void and thought about how things were going to go with us.
'With all your thoughts, I can't sleep...' Ilay complained, glaring at me.
'Then stop poking around, this is my privacy,' I finally said.
I looked down at Catherine, who was sleeping peacefully.
I closed my eyes and tried to find some peace after this day.
Ilay kept tossing and turning, which was starting to get on my nerves.
'Tell me, have you finally got it? You're talking about my thoughts here, but you're moving around like a bull in a china store,' I said back to him.
'I was at Julieth's grandmother's old people's home today...' Ilay said.
I looked over at him and frowned, 'What were you doing there?' I asked him.
He sat up and looked at me. 'She has a grandmother with severe dementia and remember when I told you she couldn't pay her bills?' He asked me.
Yes, I remembered that very well. When we walked through the forest with her heart in our hands. You don't forget something like that easily.
'Yes, I remember that.'
'Well, I paid her bills for the rest of her life and made sure the old people's home was spruced up.'
'That's great, bad Ilay is doing something good for once...' I said and had to grin.
'Yes, it is... She was so demented that she asked me who I was every time and every time she told me that her Julie didn't have any male friends.' Did our Ilay feel guilty about Julieth?
'Yes, I have guilt' Ilay replied to my thought.
I could feel this guilt coming out of him in a strange way and found it creepy.
'We can't change the situation, Ilay...' Her wish was for her grandmother to be taken care of. At least you were able to fulfill her wish...' I tried to encourage him.
'Yes, I did. Oh, you know what? Anyway, let's go to sleep now. Tomorrow the building work for Catherine's house starts, we have to be there.' he finally said and it sounded like we were an old married couple.
'Good night,' I finally said and closed my eyes.
'Night' came from Ilay before it went completely quiet.
