Chapter 18
DELILAH
The next morning I had got ready as Nael had ordered and was now standing outside his office door.
It was damn scary. Why on earth did Nael want to look after me? I knew he and my father were good friends, but this good? Maybe he really needed someone to help him with his work.
I was wearing black cloth trousers and a white shirt that I had tucked into my trousers. I had put on a pair of black high heels, which had become a habit of mine.
I had tied my long hair up in a bun so that it didn't fall into my face.
My mood was still bad, I was awake at night and when I slept I dreamt of Zamiel again.
The circles under my eyes were getting darker and darker. All the joie de vivre had gone out of me.
I vowed to shoot the next person who forced me to do something I didn't want to do. After all, I now knew how to use a gun.
I knocked on the door and Nael opened it.
He nodded to me and held the door open for me, "Come in Delilah, we need to get started right away," he said.
"Good morning Prince," I greeted him and followed him in.
"You can call me Nael. We'll have a lot to do together, these formalities are taking up a lot of our time," he said, which was fine by me to be honest. After meeting Ilay, I had already finished with the formalities inside.
I had lost all respect for Ilay, he could kill me for all I cared.
I nodded in understanding as I stood in front of his desk and he looked at three piles of papers.
"As in any city, paying taxes, insurance and much more is the order of the day. This is also the case in the demon kingdom and your task will now be to manage all the payments made and keep a record of them," Nael explained, looking me in the eye.
I nodded to signal that I had followed him this far, whereupon he logged into his computer and started a programme.
"You will have to work with this system and also record everything electronically. The electronics are for our filing system, while the paper is signed by me and the rest goes back to the state administration."
I glanced at the system and nodded again "I know the system from my studies, it shouldn't be a problem..." I whispered quietly, biting my lower lip and crossing my arms in front of my chest.
Nael leant back on the windowsill and looked at me.
"Listen Delilah... I know my brother messed up, but you can't lump us all together..." Nael looked at me wryly and smiled slightly.
My expression remained fixed and I just shrugged my shoulders "He said the same thing at the beginning..." I whispered quietly, thinking back to my first encounter with Ilay when he explained his rules to me and said, "If you follow the rules, there won't be any problems".
I didn't know what I had done to be punished with such memories....
I had to swallow and realised how my mind had wandered off.
"I... I... I'll... I'll get to work then," I whispered quietly and began to pile the stacks on top of each other to take them to my office.
"Wait, I'll help you," Nael said, reaching for the pile in my arms.
His masculine odour almost knocked me off my feet. His cologne had a leathery, woody essence with a hint of floral fragrance. It was an intoxicating scent with earthy nuances.
I left Nael with the pile of papers and followed him into my office.
My office wasn't as big as Nael's, but it was cosy and even had a recliner on the other side of the room.
He placed the papers on my desk and turned back to me.
He usually wore a full suit, but this morning he was only wearing trousers and a white shirt with the sleeves rolled up.
"Achira will be visiting you for lunch today ... Maybe you need a friend to talk to," Nael said, scratching the back of his head.
Wow... Maybe I shouldn't lump Nael together after all. Not even my own father was generous enough to make me such an offer ... To be allowed to talk to someone.
"Thank you," I said and looked at him. His bright white teeth flashed as he smiled: "You don't have to thank me. Get in touch if you need anything," Nael finally said and I looked after him as he disappeared from the room and closed the door behind him.
I looked around the office, where there was a bookshelf, my desk and a large computer.
The furniture was made of fine wood.
I sat down in my chair and looked at the room quietly for a while.
Oh Delilah... What a mess you've got yourself into. I sighed and rubbed my temples.
Life could be hard sometimes, but I had to try and make the best of it. I had to find a way to free myself from all of this...
It certainly wasn't going to be easy, but it had to happen eventually.
I threw myself into work and from then on stopped looking at my watch. Perhaps this activity was enough to take my mind off all the chaos for the first time.
I had found all the mistakes and corrected them. To be precise, I had turned the whole system on its head, and successfully so.
I had found so many mistakes and loopholes where money was involved. I had kept a list of all the tax evaders and entered everything again and correctly.
How could Nael have missed so much? Well, he was busy with other things too... Maybe it wasn't such a bad thing that I had taken it all into my own hands.
After many months, I was finally doing something meaningful that fulfilled a part of me.
I pressed the enter key and saved my work.
Satisfied, I looked at the screen and breathed a sigh of relief.
"Oh wow, you never told me you were so clever," said a female voice that made me wince.
I looked behind me and realised that Achira had snuck up on me.
My heart was pounding like crazy and I held my hand over it "Damn... You scared me," I croaked softly and looked at her in confusion.
She shrugged her shoulders "I'm sorry... I knocked, but you didn't answer, as engrossed as you were," Achira said with a smile and hugged me.
"I'm so sorry about everything Delilah..." she whispered softly in my ear and looked at me sadly.
"It's not your fault..." I tried to smile, but I couldn't.
"I should have kept you away from Ilay... He's not in a good mood at the moment... He's doing things he shouldn't be doing and saying things he shouldn't be saying..."
"Do you want to apologise on his behalf, Achira? If so, I won't accept it..." I whispered softly and looked at her.
She shook her head hastily: "No, he'll have to do it himself. I only heard what happened in the courtroom... The only thing I feel sorry for is you, nothing else. You don't deserve this," Achira explained to herself and hugged me again.
I had to hold back my tears to stop myself from crying.
"Everything will be okay..." I said quietly and returned her hug.
"You're safe with Nael," Achira assured me and looked me in the eye.
I shrugged my shoulders and looked towards the door: "Shall we go and eat? Work has made me hungry," I said to her and forced myself to smile.
Achira nodded slightly and we went into the kitchen together.
"Since you left, Ilay's only gone more crazy... I don't know why, but apparently it's all getting to him too," Achira told me as we sat down at a set table and the food was carried in front of us.
"He enjoyed that. I don't understand his problem," I said to her as I looked at all the food.
"I assume his demon made you do it and not him? Sometimes he seems schizophrenic. He's so moody... It's getting us all down at the moment," Achira sighed, grabbing her fork and starting to eat.
Unlike her, I poked around in my food. I didn't have much of an appetite and ate because I had to eat.
"The whole thing is killing me too, after all, I was the one who fired the gun," I mumbled quietly to myself and put my fork down.
"Delilah ... I can't imagine how bad that must have been for you. I don't know what to say about it either... the only thing I can tell you is that I will always help you," Achira looked at me sympathetically.
"I would be very grateful if we didn't have to talk about Ilay anymore... The subject is over for me."
Through, over. I didn't want to know anything more about Ilay, let alone have to think about him.
Achira nodded silently and stroked her curls.
The longer I looked at her, the more I felt the urge to grab a pair of scissors and cut off my hair.
"I have to get back to work," I finally said and stood up.
The subject of Ilay was bothering me more than I wanted to admit and I wasn't ready to talk to anyone about it yet.
Achira nodded understandingly and hugged me goodbye: "Let me know if anything comes up," she finally said and pressed a mobile phone into my hand.
I took it gratefully and nodded slightly, "I will, see you around." Achira teleported away again and I made my way back to the office.
When I entered, I saw Nael and my father standing at my desk, looking at me in amazement.
"Did you do all this in a few hours?" Nael asked in amazement, to which I nodded.
"That's over a million dollars that you stupidly 'found'... How?" Nael asked me with raised eyebrows and came towards me.
His height made me look small, although I measured a proud one hundred and seventy centimetres, he was two heads taller than me.
There was something wrong with Nael, but I couldn't tell what it was. At that moment, I also doubted the accuracy of my father's work. He had been so cold and emotionless in the courtroom that day... After all, he had ordered me to shoot Zamiel.
That wasn't the version I knew of him.
"I double-checked all the completed years," I said quietly when Nael cleared his throat.
"Are you saying my work was flawed?" he finally asked me, amused, to which I shook my head.
"With all due respect, it's very intricate work and four eyes see more than two," I replied and looked at him.
My father's jaw was so tense that he would have been able to cut stones.
Finally, Nael grinned and turned to my father.
"Who knew your daughter was so smart, Chris," Nael winked at him, to which my father smiled.
"Some people have to be forced into happiness, Nael. I wish it had happened sooner," my father replied and looked at me.
I knew exactly what he was talking about ... Asshole.
