Deja Vu

Chapter 14

~Year 1913~

The music played and the waves of the ocean were the dancers, moving harmonically with the rhythm.

The sound of iron swords hitting and striking against each other just added to the excitement of the music.

The crew cheered and whistled and shrieked in drunken happiness as they watched a duel between a man, and oddly, a woman.

A beautiful woman with golden hair that presented the wave of the ocean.

The two competitors laughed as they ran across the deck, one attempting to hit, and the other defend himself against the sword.

'A great chaos' wasn't enough to describe the atmosphere of the ship that afternoon.

Even though at that time no one used swords anymore, that didn't stop the crew of Saint María's ship from using them, and practicing for fun while the ocean was at ease.

The ship of Saint María was one of the only ancient ships at that time that had to be steered by a man and a wheel.

But that wasn't the only thing that seemed a little bit off about that ship.

It was the fact that it stopped by the shore only once in a while, just to quickly exchange shipments. Other than those rare times, Saint María's destiny was completely connected to the waves of the ocean.

"GET HIM!"

"HELL YEAH!"

"DON'T LET HER GET YOU DOWN!"

The cheering and shrieking continued and so did the duel, until Callaghan, the ship's most experienced and rough man of the crew, shouted,

"We're hitting the shore in a few minutes!"

So by that, both the cheering and the duel stopped at once, everyone leaving for their posts.

"Miss Irene." Callaghan called, walking toward the blonde woman.

After the miraculous night, the woman that the crew had saved, recovered quickly. They gave her the smallest set of clothing they had on deck to wear.

Everyone had gained a liking toward her and her large green eyes that went perfectly with her name;

Irene.

"Yes, sir?"

"Captain wishes to see you." And by that, Callaghan started walking and Irene saw that as her cue to follow.

Callaghan led her inside and near a door which Irene was pretty familiar with and had been brought to when they saved her.

She knocked and waited until someone said, "Come in." When Irene entered, the same voice told her to close the door behind herself, and so she did.

Irene sighted the captain of Saint María, Scott English, standing by the window and staring out at the blue ocean. He had a cigarette in hand and a bottle of whiskey laid on the desk near where he stood.

"You wanted to talk to me, captain?" Irene asked, but Scott remained quiet.

Irene waited and waited, until he finally exhaled the smoke and turned off the cigarette by rubbing it against his own palm.

He then took a glass and filled it with whiskey, drinking it quickly, not taking his glance off the small window.

Irene knew better so she didn't utter a word as he drank.

At last, he finally put the glass aside when it was empty and turned around to face Irene, resting his back against the wall with folded arms.

He kept looking at her, piercing her skin with his pale eyes. But as he was about to open his mouth to say something, he hesitated and went to pour himself another glass.

Scott's glance was still beyond the window that he finally spoke with his thick voice.

"Do you know the first rule of how to control a crew and a ship?"

Irene waited a few moments before saying, "No, sir."

"The first rule is to respect all the other rules. You shall not question them." He said, obvious that his words were all out of his drunken state. "Do you know the second rule?"

"To attempt to the other rules?"

"Rule number two: with one, goes all." He continued. "Rule number three: loyalty comes first. If you're not trustworthy... Then you're not worthy at all."

"What's rule number four?"

Irene asked, but Scott didn't answer. Instead, after a few long moments, he finally turned around to face her, walking toward her.

"We're hitting the shore, soon enough. And I'm afraid... You're leaving us. We saved you, we kept you, but the rest isn't on us."

And with that, Irene's expression changed at once. Her jaw clenched from surprise.

"You can't leave me like that. I have nowhere else to go–"

"–That's none of my concern." Scott cut her off sternly. "The rules are rules."

"But–"

"–Rule number four: no women on deck."

"Why!?"

"What was rule number one?"

"Not to question the rules." Irene muttered in disappointment.

"Exactly." There was silences between those two, as Irene looked down and Scott studied her. "CALLAGHAN!"

Scott called. Ten seconds had barely that Callaghan showed up, opening the door to the room.

"Yes, sire?"

"I want you to lead Miss Irene out of the ship as soon as we took all the shipments in. No delay is acceptable."
