Chapter 22: Fuck My Life.
Nathan Underhill.
Oh, come on! How could my life get any worse? I should have listened to my gut and kicked my guilty feelings’ ass for falling for Joshua’s puppy dog eyes. I’m not blaming him for dragging me there. Not even he could have guessed that the night would have turned out like this. On the one hand, I was facing off against an alpha, a beta, and his troop of enforcers. To make matters even thornier, the other hand came and slapped me with another group of potential enemies comprising another alpha and three betas to boot.
I wasn’t sure what Adam and his friend’s intentions were at this moment. Were they friends or foes? Fuck me! The odds of winning were slowly slipping from my paws.
“Aren’t you going to comment on the situation we’re in? Why are you so distracted all of a sudden?” I asked Fenrus.
“Oh, it’s nothing... Can’t a wolf just sit back and enjoy the view?”
“What are you—” My head snapped over to Adam’s black wolf. ”You dirty ol’ shit. You’re checking him out, aren’t you? We’re in a disastrous situation where we could get killed and you’re ogling the enemy.”
Fenrus huffed and said, “Who said Adam is our enemy? I talked to his wolf and they’re not happy about the situation. Adam’s talking to his dad, trying to help us.”
“Yeah, well... stop fraternizing and get your head back into the game before we end up dead.”
My gaze shifted toward my mom and sister. I really didn’t care what happened to me, but my family... I couldn’t let them come to harm. Gaining control of the situation was paramount.
“Joshua?” I called out to Joshua.
Joshua’s head snapped to me. “Yes?”
“Is there a way for you to contact your mother? If she can help—”
A grin appeared on Joshua’s face while his right hand flew into the air before I could finish my sentence. A pulse of red light shot into the air, lighting up the front yard in a red glow. Wailing shrieks echoed out into the darkness. All the werewolves’ heads shot up into the night sky, probably wondering what the hell he just did.
The Alpha turned to Joshua and said, “Keep your mother out of this young man. This has nothing to do with her.”
“As I said before, the Underhill family is a part of our coven.” A smirk ran across Joshua’s face. He was enjoying this. “If you harm them, my mother will see it as an act of war.”
“We won’t as long as this mutt,” the Alpha pointed his finger at me,” comes with us willingly and without picking a fight. He has to pay for attacking my pack.”
The hell I was. I did nothing wrong! I immediately extended my mind-link to everyone present: fuck their privileged pack link. Several of the wolves whined and clamped their hands over their ears as I pushed my mind into theirs. I walked up to where my family stood and took up a defensive stand in front of the Alpha and Beta, blocking them off. The Alpha had to go through me to get to my family.
I then glared up at the Alpha. ”My family isn’t going anywhere with you, Alpha,” I used his title as an insult. Gasps slipped from their mouths, probably shocked that I could communicate with them. ”Go back to your pack and go play king on your shit heap.”
The old man’s eyes flashed red and his mouth twisted out of anger. He let out a thunderous roar that shook me to my bones. Me and my big mouth. He lunged forward, but I followed suit. My mom’s cry echoed in my ears. But it was too late.
Blood rushed to my hind legs and my claws dug into the gravel, shooting forward. The Alpha tried to punch me, but I closed the gap too fast. His punch, aiming for my jaw, missed, but connected to my shoulder. A sickening crunch, accompanied by numbing pain shot throughout my body, but I held my pace and head-butted the old fuck in the chest. He flew backward until he hit one of their SUVs with a thud and screeching of tires. The scatter of glass overpowered their angry outcries. Five enforcers rushed forward, ready to avenge their alpha whose ass made a massive dent in the SUV’s side door. However, a powerful roar from Adam halted them in their tracks. Adam came running up and shifted into his human form. So did Maisie, Riley, and Tyson.
“Stop this now!” cried Adam, shoving one enforcer backward.
With an angry growl, the shoved enforcer said, “Fuck your orders, Adam! He attacked our Alpha!”
Adam strutted up to the enforcer and punched him in the stomach. The man keeled over and clutched his stomach.
“Don’t disobey me again.”
“Enough!” shouted the Alpha. He struggled to his feet while pieces of shattered glass fell off his body. “What is the meaning of this? I told you to stay home.”
“The hell I am!” replied Adam.
I could have ripped apart the tension between the father and son with my claws. Why was he defending me? Adam didn’t need to. I wasn’t part of his pack. His three friends stood with a shocked expression on their faces. Their eyes flitted between the Alpha and Adam. Scared to see what would happen.
The Alpha strutted up to his son until their noses nearly touched. He breathed heavily while rubbing his chest. The old fool tried to mask the pain he felt, but he wasn’t fooling anyone. I hit him as hard as he did me. I was balancing my weight on my three paws, trying to avoid putting pressure on my fractured right shoulder. Damn, the Alpha could pack a mean punch. If Adam didn’t intervene when he did, I could have been in a world of hurt. Even for a Grayback, my strength equaled an alpha’s, but his experience would have given him an edge over me. I could have channeled magic to boost my strength, but my body would have suffered for it.
“Get out of my way, pup,” Alpha Lawrence threatened. “He has to pay for attacking our pack. Don’t let this Grayback mess with your head. He lied to you about who he truly was.”
“Maybe he had a reason. Did dad ask him, or did you just use the attack as an excuse to kill him for a crime he didn’t commit?”
The Alpha drew back his fist to hit his son, but I interrupted him. “I didn’t attack your pack, you old fool.” Their heads snapped in my direction. “I defended my friend from one of your delinquents. You really should teach your teenagers to keep their dick in their pants. The Supreme will be pissed when she finds out what happened back at the party.”
The Alpha lowered his fist and said, “What is he ranting on about?”
I snorted, shaking my head. This old alpha was slowly losing his touch. He didn’t even get his facts straight before he barreled all his way here to exact his warped sense of justice.
“Get your facts straight, Alpha. Before you make a big mistake, that will cost you more than your pride.”
“Explain it to me then?” the Alpha relented.
“It’s not for the ears of those around you. I don’t want Joshua to suffer more than he already has by exposing the sick details that transpired back at the party.” I told the man.
“Please, dad. Don’t punish Nathan for what Bobby did,” said Adam, placing his hand on his father’s shoulder.
Nathaniel suddenly stepped forward and said, “Goddess, what did he do?”
Adam and the others lowered their heads in shame. Then Adam spoke again, “As Nathan just said, it’s a delicate matter. We should discuss this behind closed doors.”
The Alpha’s expression softened, and then he slumped his shoulders in defeat. “Very well, we’ll do it, son. I don’t mean to point out the obvious, but didn’t you four bring an extra pair of shorts and t-shirts with you? We may be werewolves, but some aren’t accustomed to seeing us walking around naked.”
Damn the old fuck! Why did he have to point it out? I already struggled to keep my eyes from wandering. Just then, Fenrus took control. Our eyes immediately landed on Adam’s flawlessly scalped back and butt.
Fenrus’ pants became heavy as his arousal shot into the sky. ”Damn, that’s hot! Look at that—”
“Calm down, you dirty hoe!” I said. “They’ll smell our arousal!”
But it was too late. Several snickers and giggles rang out. Oh, Goddess. Why didn’t I let the Alpha kill me? Adam turned to me, smirking up a storm, showing off his impressive package. Hell, what was he feeding that thing? I gulped down my gasp, but behind me, Joshua wasn’t so lucky. A hint of jealousy rumbled out of my chest, causing me to growl at him.
Joshua flinched. “Sorry, my mistake.” He averted his eyes toward the ground.
The idea of Joshua seeing Adam naked made me mad for some reason. Only I could see him naked. What?! No, I wasn’t. I didn’t care if anyone saw him naked. They could eye rape him all they wanted. I couldn’t care less.
Fenrus’ laughter echoed in my skull. “Who are you trying to fool?”
“Impressed by what you see?” Adam’s husky voice caught my ear. My head whipped around to face his junk again. I immediately closed my eyes.
“Fuck off, you ass! Get some pants on! There’s a young child here,” I said. ”Your dick will scar her for life.”
“Oh, come on. Don’t be embarrassed. It’s only natural to take a peek. I can already see that you like what you’ve seen.”
Fuck! Can someone be so obnoxious? If he wanted to play this game, so could I. ”Yeah, it may be impressive. But you know the saying, right?”
Adam strutted up to me and whispered, “And what is it?”
I focused on my human form. My muscles and bones started snapping, rearranging, until I turned back into my human form. I had to clench down on my teeth as my right shoulder burned like a motherfucker. Unlike the four nudists in front of me, I wore an enchanted pair of briefs that reformed when I shifted.
I slowly got up to my feet and smirked as Adam’s darkened eyes scanned my almost naked body. What could I say? I had a six-pack, broad shoulders, and a narrow waist. Nearly as impressive as Adam’s, but a bit leaner.
“The bigger they are, the limpier they get,” I said with a mischievous smile.
Adam’s smile turned into a scowl while a burst of laughter broke out behind Adam. Riley lay on the ground, laughing his ass off while Maisie and Tyson tried to choke theirs down.
“Wasn’t that a bit harsh?” Fenrus pouted.
“No. He started it.”
Adam twisted on the spot and stomped over to an enforcer, who brought over a pair of red shorts. He quickly pulled the pair of pants over his butt. I nearly whimpered as he covered him up. Urg! Why was I attracted to an asshole?
“He’s not an asshole.” Fenrus whimpered inside of my head. Why was he suddenly so sad? ”Because you’re pushing the guy away who’s really into you. We can’t live like this.”
“Like what?”
“Alone and scared all the time. Grandpa has already robbed us of so much. Don’t let him take away our hopes of falling in love. Look at him, Nathan.” My eyes caught Adam while he talked with his father and the beta. “Would it be so terrible to have him in our lives, to love and cherish us?”
I wanted to say no, but the risk was too high. “You know we can’t... He might end up like dad.” If that happened, I wouldn’t survive it.
“Please! Just give him a chance.” Fenrus continued whining, causing a slight headache to flare up.
Before I could talk to my wolf again, a soft hand landed on my left shoulder, my mom’s. Her touch alone soothed my tired body.
“Honey, are you alright?” my mom asked in a worried tone.
I turned to her. Lilly had fallen asleep in her arms. Mom, I stroked the angel’s hair and said, “I’m fine... I’m sorry this happened. I screwed up big time, I’m—”
“Don’t be. The truth had to come out, eventually.” She stroked my shoulder.
“I agree,” said a female’s voice.
My head snapped toward the tree line on the left side of the front garden. The Supreme emerged from the darkness, accompanied by several coven members. Her eye shot daggers into the wolves, causing them to flinch. Even the Alpha struggled to keep a straight face, but a hint of fear seeped out.
“We need to talk.”
