Death's Saviour

Chapter Chapter Twenty: Noah

Author's Song of the Chapter: You Made Me Do It by Tommee Proffitt

Four days have passed since the incident with Perry. Dusk is more playful and open than the old her, though I’m not complaining about it even though I do miss that more serious side of her sometimes. That serious side had the deadly fire that seemed to blaze from her very core. Carl has been battling to stay alive, the Wolf isn’t taking to him as easily as it did for me, we are starting to worry he won’t survive. We constantly listen for gossip about Perry and whether he tells the pack about us or not. I think he won’t, he needs some sort of power to hold over them, some sort of information to keep himself slive when daring to be in that mix of people. So far there has been no news, no news is good news, but it also makes me anxious. I’m anxious as to what comes next. Dusk is curled up in my lap snoozing as I rub her side beneath the blanket that is tight around her. The nights have been getting warmer as summer approaches, winter is hopefully behind us. The thought of winter makes me think about last time it was cold out, Dusk couldn’t control her shifts. Is that something that will happen to me, to Carl? Will we lose time to the forest over those winter months? Will we lose ourselves? I push those questions from my mind as the front door rattles closed. Lora’s face is flushed red as she trembles a little while bending to rest her hands on her knees trying to catch her breath as she stands in front of us. The door closing woke Dusk who looks up at me with alert and sharp eyes. I smile down at her because there is a deep seriousness in her eyes that has been missing, that seriousness and dangerous part of her is a major part of her personality and a part that I seriously love. Dusk rolls to face Lora who has caught her breath and works furiously to bring something up on Carl’s phone from where it was laying on the table.

“Everything okay Lora?” Dusk asks, her tone is clipped but curious.

“You both need to see this!” Lora shoves Carl’s phone into our faces as a news lady appears on the screen in front of the hospital in town.

“The breaking news story for this morning includes two teens being hospitalized after experiencing extremely weird phenomena. Mr. Channel placed his foster son into a psych ward a month ago after a freak tornado struck and destroyed their house and their house alone. Mr. Channel claims that his foster son made this tornado after they got into a verbal argument, he goes on to explain that this isn’t the first time his foster son has tried to kill him, there are other times where out of nowhere the oxygen empties from the house and wind storms kick up indoors. The teen was hospitalized after suffering suffocation in the psych ward. This isn’t the only story of this manor; another female teen was hospitalized earlier this week for suffering from some sort of poisonous attack to her system. The doctor’s confirmed that a highly dangerous poison was found in her bloodstream and they are unsure how the girl is still alive at this time. Are these a new form of humans? Superhumans perhaps? Or are the Wolves envolving to their old ways? More breakings news later in the evening, this is your news lady…” The video continues, but I have stopped listening to it since there is no more useful information being presented.

"Those are Wolves like us, but how?” Dusk questions, her voice weird as her brows scrunch together.

“Those Wolves are like me, they had a black-furred parent and a white-furred parent. We are like Noah but a little weaker in blood as our Wolf is dormant as are our powers until you became a mated pair. The presence of an alpha pair is bringing out our true natures because you are calling to us even if you don’t mean to be.” Carl’s voice is very faint from the couch where he breathes in raspy breathes.

“Alphas can bring out the long-dormant Wolf within others, but, they will die if they are not helped,” Lora explains, her voice hammering the meaning into us.

“They are dead anyway, aren’t they? The white-furs will kill them long before their powers would.” I state turning my eyes to the floor and then over to Carl as sorrow digs into me for those poor Wolves.

They are suffering and will be murdered for something they most likely don’t even understand. Those Wolves will not get the chance to experience what I have, what we have. It’s not fair, they did nothing wrong!

“They won’t be killed if we distract the white-furs long enough to help them and bring them here!” Dusk bursts suddenly, I look at her meeting her wild fiery eyes.

I want to kiss her as she is always so smart.

“What are you thinking Dusk?” I ask the question in her ear while Carl’s faint voice asks, “Wouldn’t that have to be a pretty big distraction?”.

“It will be the biggest distraction that we can give them!” Dusk smiles, her smile turns into one of those genuine thoughtful smiles that tells me she has it all figured out, now she just needs to share it with us.

“The female will cause more grief.” Lora murmurs thoughtfully allowing Dusk’s plan to click into my mind and a smile touches my lips.

Carl is the only one who still hasn’t clued in to what’s going on, I let him in on it as he sits up his face gray in colour.

“We are going to kill the alpha female!” My voice is dark and dangerous as it sends shivers down Carl’s spine while he looks between Dusk and I as we smile.

“Isn’t that risky?” Carl prods.

“No, we aren’t going to get very close to her, just close enough to see her,” Dusk explains causing Carl to gain a small smile that grows into a crazy one that matches ours.

“Kill the alpha, save the Wolves, I’m coming with you!” Carl tells us, and I instantly shake my head at him.

I’m about to say something that basically means no when Dusk’s hands come down on my shoulders. Her eyes are glowing as they are fixed on a spot in the family room, I notice Carl is looking there too his mouth gaping open. Closing my eyes, I reopen them to see a wolf sitting in the middle of the room, it’s tail wags and it wears a crazy grin. The wolf moves forwards disappearing into Carl’s outstretched fingers. I guess I’m not getting a say in the matter as Carl’s body begins to twist and reform.

Dusk pulls me up from the couch, we drag Carl for the front doors as we want to put our plan in action. Besides, he will be less confused outside. The air is warm outside as our adrenaline heats us up enough that we sweat. We shed our clothes shifting just in time as Carl’s body stops twitching as he’s reformed. He lays panting in the grass, worry pinches me but is chased away when Carl’s eyes pop open and he lets his tongue fall from his mouth.

‘How do you feel?’ - I send Carl the question as he catches his breath attempting to get his paws beneath him.

He doesn’t answer me right away as he tries to stand up and take a few steps, but his chin hits the dirt and his ass end pops into the air causing Dusk to let out a bark of laughter.

‘I feel like a baby deer must damn these paws!’ - Carl’s response growls into my mind causing me to let out my own laugh because I know what he is feeling.

We sit for a little while letting Carl get the hang of things. When he finally starts to get it we all collide together our fur brushing against one another, it’s our style of an embrace. This is us accepting Carl into our pack, pack the idea feels so right. We take off into the forest first hunting and feeding to get the strength we will need to pull this plan off. Carl keeps up with us as more adrenaline floods my veins than ever before. We are going after an alpha! Not just any alpha, but the alpha female. This will be a big shocker to the pack when we take her down. They will truly fear us more than ever before.

‘You are the alphas of nightmares.’ - Carl nicknames Dusk and I bringing a wolfish smile to both of our faces.

Carl and I may be newer at this than Dusk, but we already understand the beasts within. This animal has always been a part of us that was just hidden deep within.

‘Have any more things you are keeping from me?’ - I send to Carl and only Carl as I’m a little hurt that he never told me about the Wolf blood within him and everything, not once did he mention it when he could of but he told Dusk.

‘Two things, number one being this.’ - Carl states and suddenly the sky opens crackling thunder as a lightning strike blast into a tree nearby with a furious boom.

Dusk and I both jump in surprise and Carl wears a smug little grin.

‘Carl you didn’t say you were a Storm, Wolf.’ - Dusk states happily in our minds as she views Carl’s powers, he is powerful.

‘Two, I’m gay.’ - Carl states in my mind and I laugh.

Dusk nips at my side as I feel hurt radiating off Carl and I realize he thinks I didn’t already know that, he thinks I just laughed at his sexuality.

‘Carl, dude, I already knew that I saw the way you constantly looked at Tucker. I’m laughing at how long it took you to actually tell me.’ - I send him clearing things up as Carl jostles into my side in an appreciative gesture that I return.

‘We are a pack now, a family, no more secrets!’ - Dusk sends Carl and me, we all howl out in agreement.

I can feel the alpha within me, the way my muscles ripple and how Dusk is my equal in many ways. Even though Dusk was the one to deliver the bite Carl is my beta. As humans we had no power, instead, we were annoying fragile creatures that were easily broke. We have evolved from fragile into these dangerous beasts, these beasts that match Dusk. Dusk is my mate, she is mine to protect and love just as Carl is my beta to protect. I let my thoughts continue to wander until we run to where we need to be. My pads ache a little, and Carl flops onto the ground, from climbing up the side of the cliff where the white-furs huge mansion stands, mansion is an underrated term. This building towering over us is more like a castle surrounded by little houses for the more important pack members to live. We learned about compounds like this in history, other than they were for kings, their families, and their protectors. I guess these Wolves aren’t so different than history in the ways they work on this land. Dusk moves to break me from my thoughts as she leads us around the building until we are standing a little ways from it on a hillside in the forest. Dusk nudges me and I follow her gaze to an open window on the middle floor of this side of the building. I narrow my eyes sniffing the air, Crane’s scent is the one that I pick up just as I see him move into view of the window. A woman follows him, and I know in my soul she is the alpha female. I don’t feel any serious alpha vibes coming from her or feel any command from her stance.

‘She shouldn’t be classified as an alpha. She has no alpha vibes or commands to her presence alone.’ - Carl points out my thoughts as he sits behind us prepared to take part in the plan.

‘This will be easy!’ - Dusk yips happily in my mind as I nod over at her.

I continue to watch the window my ears perk up as I catch their conversation. Crane is voicing his worries about something, but his mom is grumbling and groaning at his words obviously unhappy with him.

‘This is perfect! Okay, Noah, I need you to freeze her like a popsicle from the inside long enough for me to burn her insides to mush. When I say I’m done I’ll unfreeze her then we can watch the show or get the hell out of here when we do leave Carl will make it rain to cover our scents and tracks up.’ - Dusk tells us, I nod to her again now fully understanding.

I do have to admit this is almost set up too perfectly with us able to kill the alpha female right in front of Crane. We can send a huge message of our power in this simple moment. Dusk and I turn back to face the window when Dusk nods at me I focus my powers making the alpha female freeze without any signs that she is frozen I just want her to stop moving randomly like she’s paralyzed. I have never done anything like this with my powers yet and this amount of focus is causing me to strain. I can’t do it, I can’t push my powers far enough to reach her!

‘You can do this Noah, you are a Wolf, you are my mate, my equal and I believe in you.’ - Dusk whispers in my mind, her words giving me new confidence that I needed.

I am just as powerful as Dusk is because I am her equal, as her mate, I can do this. I close my eyes putting all my focus into it. As soon as I can feel it working I grab onto that fact and it gives my powers a surge of control. I open my eyes as cold wafts off me as my fur spikes and I can see the alpha female stop moving as she freezes into a state of paralyzes only. I watch her eyes look around and can hear Crane talking to her until he realizes something is wrong. Carl gives a proud huff behind me.

“Mom, mom, you okay?” Crane’s voice reaches my ears, I smile as I watch the alpha female’s eyes begin to bulge in her face.

Dusk is taking her turn on the alpha female. She works quickly as she looks up at the window, her eyes blaze fire and I wonder if my eyes are cold as ice. When she nods at me I let my hold go on the alpha female. We watch in satisfaction as blood spews from the alpha female’s mouth and she falls as her eyes roll into her head as she is dead. Her thumping body on the ground makes us smile as Crane is screaming. His screams rip into me making my heart race at a kick-pace speed. I turn to look at Dusk who looks up at the window her eyes wide, she seems to be remembering something almost remorsefully. As quickly as that look is in her eyes it is gone replaced by a deep look of satisfaction. Dusk turns to Carl and me as we share another embrace. Dusk rubs her nose along my check as I lick hers.

‘We should get out of here.’ - I whisper to Dusk and Carl as all three of us turn into the forest preparing to disappear.

Carl turns back just before we leave opening up the sky with rain and sending a bolt of lightning striking down into the house. Screams erupt all over as darkness floods through the compound with the loss of power Carl’s strike has caused. One task is done, now we can save those two Wolves at the hospital, we can save two people in the distraction we have created. Dusk and I stay focused on the new form of adrenaline that laces our veins as we run off away towards the hospital. Carl is close on our heels as we run towards the two wolves who need our help.
