Chapter 12
Chapter 12
Chris focused his suspicions on a few workers involved in previous disturbances. “It must be a vendetta. The workers at the site were all waiting to get paid. These few, not having received their wages, had family members who subsequently met with accidents.
“They hated Chloe’s father, but since he was already dead and the case was hastily closed, they likely couldn’t let go, and that’s why they targeted Chloe…
“This man, Edward Brown, has been spotted near your house several times in the past few months. It seems he had already scoped out the place.”
Arthur seemed relieved.
“I knew it. It was her family’s fault, to begin with. If it was their sin, they should bear
it.”
He found an excuse for my death.
Chris looked at Arthur incredulously.
“Arthur, that was your wife! She endured inhuman torture before she died. No matter what, she was a victim. How can you say such things!”
Arthur closed his eyes, saying nothing.
Finally, they had identified the culprit.
I breathed a sigh of relief.
This matter was finally nearing its end.
While solving the case, Arthur also took the time to visit Amanda.
I watched his retreating figure, and bitterness spread through me.
He always made time for Amanda.
Yet when I begged him just to let me know he was safe, he would refuse.
Amanda cooed affectionately at Arthur, pleading with him to share details of the case.
“Is it that tricky this time? It’s been so long, and the case is still unsolved.”
She continued probing.
“Has the identity of the deceased been confirmed? Who was it?”
Without any hesitation, Arthur replied, “It was Chloe.”
Amanda’s body shook, and she spilled the soup she was holding, a flicker of panic in her eyes.
Arthur quickly got up to fetch a towel for her.
“You re such a big girl, yet still so clumsy.”
Amanda grabbed Arthur’s hand.

“How did she die?
“Is it really her?”
Arthur softly reassured her, “Don’t worry, I won’t let the same happen to you.”
Arthur didn’t see the excitement hidden in Amanda’s eyes.
I wasn’t surprised.
I was the one who stood between them, usurping the identity of Mrs. Clark for years, refusing to relinquish it.
Now that I was gone, they could finally be together.
