Day Zero

Chapter 29

Day 108:

The vaccine had worked on Oilida, she was unaffected by the virus. Yumi and Dr. Kennedy immediately contacted the Vice President, the new Commander and Chief of the United States Military, who immediately gave the North American Team permission to distribute the vaccine to the Military, along with the statement that the vaccine wouldn’t be effective on those who had preexisting medical conditions.

Riley knew that they should be celebrating or feeling proud. Instead they remained silent and sullen as they sat in the break room. I killed him. I killed Strader were the only thoughts that were running through his mind.

When they released the vaccine to the military, a helicopter almost immediately landed on the roof to assist in the transportation of the vaccine to the nearest Air Force base before it would be flown to Russia and to the Antarctic. Once there the other two teams would test the vaccine as well.

Benjamin flipped on the television to fill the void of silence.

“A vaccine has been found. The team in North America has found a vaccine that is currently being tested by the United States Military; the hopes are high that this vaccine will assist to prevent the spread of this disease that has killed millions worldwide. However, all miracles seem to come with a price. The vaccine will not work on those with preexisting medical conditions” the new anchor slowed down as she read the screen before her.

She is probably having the same thought that Abigail had; a member of her family will not be able to have the vaccine Riley thought bitterly.

Abigail turned to him and took his hand. He squeezed hers tightly and attempted to give her a smile, but he knew that she knew it was forced. Everyone’s smile was forced since he’d had killed Strader.

“Why didn’t he tell us?” Riley asked Abigail.

“Because he knew that we needed to know if the vaccine wouldn’t work if someone already had a preexisting medical condition” Abigail replied not looking at him.

“We did the right thing?” he asked.

“Yes” Fabiana replied.

“How long will it take to make the vaccine?” Riley asked.

Dr. Kennedy turned to look at him. “Since this is a state of emergency, the process has been sped up dramatically. The military has agreed to be the human test subjects. Once the military has had success the mass production will begin”

“What about the other blood types?” Abigail asked.

“The team in Europe has been working with that and we are currently working on the B+ vaccine right now” Benjamin replied.
