Daughter of the Mafia's Consigliere

Chapter 5

MARIANNE.

The engagement started in full swing after I got dolled up by my mother and Isabella. I had no choice but to obey and allow them to get me prepared for the engagement party. If I really wanted to get out of here, shouting and quarreling with my mother wouldn't change anything. I just have to be calm and strategically plan how to get out of this place.

I was dressed in a body con lace dress, my hair was styled into a messy bun and I was adorned with jewelry.

The hall wasn't filled to the brim like I expected, it was just a small gathering of people and I didn't even know who set the dress code to be black. Every single person in this hall was dressed in expensive suits and ball gowns but all in black color. Even the lacy gown I was putting on was also black, are we celebrating a burial ceremony or what?

No one even asked for my opinion as the supposed bride-to-be, they just planned everything behind my back without my consent. Wait, I think this gathering is just for the members of the D'Onofrio mafia family. Damn! I should have noticed immediately.

They all kept laughing, dining and relating well with each other, no one even noticed my presence. I felt like I didn't fit into this gathering, what am I even saying? I fucking don't belong here!

To make matters worse, the so-called underboss to whom I was getting married kept acting like he didn't notice my presence. We kept acting like total strangers as we never said a word to each other despite the fact that I was sitting next to him.

I don't even know his name, there was this cold air between us that made my tongue get tied. The cold look on his face was giving me chills but I couldn't deny the fact that he was looking so hot and handsome.

Even though I wanted to talk to him, I would just ask him to break off the engagement right now because he obviously doesn't look like one who is interested in getting married to me.

How do I put up with someone like this if we eventually get married? I don't even want to imagine it because it's going to be a disaster.

I've always dreamt of having a peaceful marriage with the right person, not tying knots with a stranger who I feel absolutely nothing for. I'm sure he feels nothing for me too because he didn't even spare me a glance and just kept watching how the party was going on.

I spotted my mother chatting and laughing with a group of people who I guessed were her friends. I'm sure she must be feeling on top of the world since her daughter is getting married to an underboss, I'm sure she is going to brag among her peers.

Greediness for more power and honor is also a part of the reason my mother is keen about me getting married into the D'Onofrio's' family

From the little I know about this Mafia family, they are one of the strongest families in the world. That's why my mum is putting so much effort in making sure I get married into the family without caring what would be my fate afterward. Does she even deserve to still be called my mother? That title should be stripped from her because she acts nothing close to being a mother.

I watched her from where I was sitting with a death glare and clenched fist, she was having so much fun and the pure happiness on her face says it all. Why wouldn't she be happy when her dreams are coming true? She doesn't give a fuck about her daughter's feelings whatsoever. That's why I need to do everything within my power to get out of here. Nothing is impossible no matter how tight the security is, I will just look for a way.

I wasn't actually sitting with just the underboss but also his father and a few men, we were sitting around a table. They all kept discussing something I knew nothing about and I kept moping around like a moron.

Is this really an engagement party or just a gathering to chit-chat because I don't understand anymore? Everyone is just busy discussing with their own pair of friends, the servers are busy too with their business.

It seems I was the only one who kept looking around, I just felt like flying back to Arizona into the arms of Oliver, the only place I feel safe and comfortable. I can't believe I'm really getting engaged without having Sophia or any of my other friends around me.

I had the urge to excuse myself because I was getting tired of sitting in just one spot and looking around.

I even lost the appetite to taste anything, not even water, I was more concerned about my plan to escape out of here.

I was about to leave when the entertainer of the party suddenly took the mic and gave a speech about the reason for the gathering. He called on the underboss and that was when I learned of his name, he bears the name Ricardo. Such a nice name for a dangerous Mafia like him.

He stood up from his seat and suddenly faced me, a mini mic had already been attached to the collar of his suit. I grew nervous as I wondered what he had to say, is he going to propose to me right now? Gosh! This feels so cringed!

"I welcome you all to my engagement party and I hope you all have fun to the fullest." He suddenly said and there was loud applause from everyone present.

What did he even say that they were all clapping? He was even sounding so rude so what's the cheer for?

He suddenly brought out a small box and revealed a glittering diamond ring, he was going to propose to me for real!

The words of admiration coming from the crowd was kind of pissing me off, my mother's voice was the loudest.

He points the ring at me without saying anything, getting me confused. Isn't he going to ask me to get married to him or is this another style of proposal? "Say yes!"

"Accept the ring!"

"Go ahead, my dear daughter!"

I could hear statements flying from different corners and it got me annoyed.

What am I saying yes for when he didn't even utter a word to me?

I looked up at him and he had this defiant and insolent look on his face. Like seriously? I've never come across any engagement like this, he is the rudest person I've ever come across, he has no single respect!

I don't blame him at all, my mother is the cause of all this nonsense, she made it look like I was the one throwing myself and begging to get married to him.

I made eye contact with my mother and she was glaring deadly at me since I was delaying in accepting the ring. I knew she was going to skin me alive if I ever rejected his proposal but it was just too rude and disrespectful even though I know both of us never wanted this.

I rolled my eyes and pointed out my ring finger, he then slid the ring, earning loud cheer and celebration from the guests.

My goodness! So no one saw anything wrong with his stupid proposal? I think no one here is normal!

Ricardo sat back and continued acting like I was invincible, he received congratulatory handshakes from his father and friends.

I was congratulated too but I made it very obvious that I wasn't happy with the way things were going. This is literally the worst engagement party I have ever come across!!!
