Chapter 2
She smelled bacon. Which could only mean one thing. Her daughter was here. She was in her kitchen to be exact. Cooking. Well, she could eat. Jenny got up from her comfortable king-sized bed and threw on some pants. She stopped by the bathroom to brush her teeth before making her way downstairs.
“Mmm, baby doll, that smells good! What are you cooking?”
“Morning, Mama. I’m making your favorites. Bacon, eggs, grits, and pecan waffles.”
Yeah, my baby can cook! Jenny thought. I, on the other hand, can’t boil water. Jenny had no idea what she would have done over the centuries without her daughter. She hadn’t exactly planned on her, but once she set her eyes on her, she couldn’t give her up. She was Jenny’s, and she was keeping her. Although a complete contrast of her with black hair and eyes so blue they almost seemed to glow all the time. She was Jenny’s pride and joy, what had kept her going all those times she wanted to give up. She gave her daughter a smirk and wondered what she was thinking in that head of hers.
Krista Belle Johnston loved her mama. She was the best mama in the world as far as she was concerned. Even when Krista’s Mystic abilities became too powerful to ignore and she gave in to the evil pull that was in her nature by blood, her mama just helped her clean up the bloody mess, reassuring her that everything would be okay and that she still loved her. “You can’t help who you are, baby. It’s in your nature. I’m the oddball in this thing. Not you,” her mama would tell her.
Krista never judged her mama. Didn’t even stop loving her once, even though they were as different as night and day. Jennifer tried to keep her on the straight and narrow, but Krista slipped more times than she was willing to admit out loud. So that was why she was at her mama’s house, super crazy early, making her mama’s favorite breakfast. Besides, she would be eating some microwave crap if Krista didn’t cook for her. She couldn’t have that.
“So Krista, how’s work? Any cute babies born lately?” Jenny asked.
“Some of these parents need to be shot or fixed,” Krista replied. “I promise they let anybody give birth these days. They come in there thinking the shit’s gonna be easy and when it’s not they start yelling and cussing at me. I almost slapped a patient yesterday. Stupid bitch kicked me while I was telling her to push. Talking about she needed something for the pain. It was too damn late for that. Baby’s head was almost out. Just dumb.”
That and Krista Belle didn’t like people on a good day. It made Jenny thankful she’d never had to deal with play dates and playgrounds when Krista was growing up. She might have killed a few kids. Then Jenny would have had to kill a few parents to keep everything under wraps. So why she chose to be an OB/GYN was beyond her. She was going to kill one of her patients one day, and Jenny didn’t know if she would be able to cover that shit up. With all the cell phones and cameras they had now, it wouldn’t be as easy as it once was. No, she didn’t see it happening.
“Have you been doing the yoga and meditating we talked about?” Jenny asked. “You know you’re like our people. You give into your evil nature at the drop of a hat. You have to be more careful, sweetie. I don’t think I could cover up you killing a whole family. We have to stay under the radar. Humans wouldn’t understand what we are, and I don’t want to have to kill anyone for threatening you. Human or otherwise.”
She paused for a moment, letting this sink in, then said, “But if I had to, I wouldn’t hesitate. I may not enjoy going around killing any and everything that move, but I am still a killer. I’ve done my fair share of evil in this world.” And Jenny meant that shit. She would kill anyone who thought to mess with her baby. Even though she was an adult now, it didn’t matter. She was all the family she had left and she’d be damned before anyone took that away from her.
“I know, Mama. I know. I have been doing what you said and it helps some. The urges are just always there under the surface. I have all that power and no outlet to use it on. Some days I feel like I’m burning from the inside out. I don’t understand it, but I’m controlling it as best I can. Sometimes I wish we had other Mystics to talk to, but I understand why we don’t. Put too many of us together and death and destruction follow in our wake. I’ll go hunting tonight. That always makes me feel better.”
Yes, that would make her baby girl feel better, but what would make Jenny feel better? Maybe she would go to Heaven’s Angles tonight. Do a little dancing, drink a little, and find someone to take the edge off her sexual and Mystic needs. It had been awhile. Months in fact. She was surprised she hadn’t drained someone on the streets yet, but she had better control than that. Mystics barely out of their teens did that, not full grown adults. It was part of the reason parents kept such a close eye on their children the first century of their birth. They were unpredictable and had the capability of draining entire villages before they could be stopped or slowed down. Yes, she really needed to go out tonight.
“You know what, baby? I think that’s a good idea. A very good idea.”
Jackson rolled over to snuggle up closer to his lover, but all he felt was empty space. He listened for his lover thinking maybe he’d gone to the bathroom or was in the kitchen. Nothing. Not even a peep. Where the hell was his Nyhiya? He was going to paddle his ass when he saw him. It was going to be nice and red when he was done, and Taylor wouldn’t be able to sit for days; no, weeks afterward. In the middle of his spanking fantasy, he heard the door open and close. Then he smelled his lover’s unmistakable scent. He also smelled coffee and donuts. So that’s where his baby had gone: to get food since they hadn’t made it to the store yet. Jackson guessed he could let him slide this time, but he still should have told him he was going out.
Jackson rubbed the sleep from his eyes and grabbed a pair of sweatpants on his way to the kitchen to guilt trip his mate for leaving him in bed all alone. He was going to lay it on thick, too. Full on whining and pouting about waking up without his mate beside him. He’d feel so bad that he’d rush to make it up to him. Jackson smiled to himself at the thought and quickly let it slip from his face as he finally reached the door to the kitchen.
“I woke up to an empty bed.” Taylor could hear the fake pout in Jackson’s voice. He was too cute in the morning. All six-feet-eleven inches of him. His man was big. He had three hundred and fifteen pounds of solid muscle. Smooth, sun-tanned skin; spiked, medium-length brown-blond hair, and blue eyes. He was a perfect specimen of a fine looking man. And he was all his. He still wondered sometimes how he’d gotten so lucky.
“Aw, poor baby. I just went to get some breakfast to get you started this morning so we could run some errands. We gotta go grocery shopping, check on the tattoo shop, even though we’re off the next four days, and check in with the pack. The alpha said some of the younger pups got into some fights and some people were killed. He just wanted to make sure people knew how to cover themselves so those crazy secret society nut jobs, the Mooyers, don’t find us. You know those human bastards would kill anyone of us if they got their hands on us. We may not be the nicest beings on this planet, but neither are they. We deserve to be here as much as they do. So eat up, shower, and get dressed so we can get to it. Maybe if you’re lucky, I’ll give you a blowjob later on before we head to Heaven’s tonight.”
Well, that perked Jackson right up. He loved blowjobs, especially from Taylor. In about thirty minutes they were fed, showered, and on their way. The faster this shit got done, the sooner Taylor could get on with the sucking. And if Jackson were lucky, there would be a little fucking, too. He was always lucky, especially when it came to Taylor.
Alpha Taser “Taz” Jameson, a Dylia, was a tiny little thing. You could tell just by looking at his five-feet-five-inch frame. He weighed about one hundred and seventy-five pounds and had rough, boyish good looks. Yet he was one of the deadliest and most powerful of the Dylia. Essentially, he was not one to fuck around with. No one who knew him dared turn their backs on him. Not even those who called him friend. Taz had killed a couple of those, too. Jackson and Taylor were the only ones he was cautious around, and they’d all grown up in the same birth pack before branching out on their own. Right now, though, he wanted to strangle half of the Parum Mors Pack members.
“Children, do you know why you’re here today?” Taz looked out over his minions, who gave no reply. “No? Let me enlighten you: it all has to do with checks and balances.” When this didn’t register with his audience, he continued. Jackson and Taylor just rolled their eyes. Why did they even need to fucking be here?
“I don’t give a fuck that you kill, torture, or whatever else. Just make sure to cover your fucking tracks. I am not your fucking parent. I am your Alpha. Yes, I will cover your messes to a certain extent, but basic shit like that— you should be able to take care of it yourselves. And you parents will start paying the punishment for your children’s indiscretions.” Taz’s voice rose. He was working himself up.
“Get your shit together, because if I have to do it for you, no one—and I mean no one—is gonna like the damn outcome. Am I making myself clear?”
There was a chorus of, “Yes, Alpha!” from all around.
“Now you guys know I hate being a prick, but sometimes it can’t be avoided. With so many new pups, it seems like I just need to remind them of the rules. Something their fucking parents should be doing.”
Suddenly Taz raised his arms and smiled. “Now that we got that nasty business cleared up, let’s mingle and have some fun!” With that, the crowd dispersed and Jackson and Taylor saw their alpha making his way to them.
“Damn,” Jackson murmured. He was trying to get his dick sucked.
Jackson stole a glance at Tay and saw a smirk on his face. So his lover knew what he was thinking. Asshole.
“Alpha,” they said in unison while baring their necks slightly.
“Boys, let’s take this to my office, shall we?”
Fuck, thought Jackson. Sometimes being the Alpha’s Beta had its privileges, but today didn’t feel like one of those days. Nope. This was a bunch of bullshit. He had a blowjob waiting, damn it. They didn’t have time for whatever this shit was. It was supposed to be a simple gathering; a gentle reminder to the pups to get their heads out of their asses.
Taylor noticed his lover’s scowl and immediately knew what was on his mind. “Don’t worry, Jack baby. I’ll take care of you. This can’t take that long. Let’s just go and hear him out and then we’re out of here,” Taylor thought to Jackson. Man, Jackson loved that mind link that he and Taylor had. It made having private conversations actually private. Just the way he liked it.
“It better not take more than five seconds or I’m going to rip someone apart,” Jackson thought back to Taylor. The laugh that reverberated in his mind caused Jackson to crack a smile. Only his Tay could find Jackson’s need to do violence amusing. It was one of the reasons he loved him so much.
