Chapter 48
"What the fuck, bruh!"
"How's that even possible?"
"Mira who's the meekest of us all."
"Are you really serious right now?"
Damien felt like casting a spell on the girls so they could just keep the fuck shut and let him think.
Truth be told, he wasn't sure whether or not he had made sense. It was a risk he took. Given by the information he had, that was the only thing he could do. Plus, he had a timespan.
Three fucking system gems?!!! Nah, he wouldn't toy with those. He'd rather apologize later if he was wrong, than regret not taking the risk.
"Why did you kill him?"
He asked instead of satisfying the worries of the girls. He wouldn't back down until he was sure that the time was right.
"Why are you accusing her? How could say such?"
That was Laurette, fighting for her sister. That's what all twins would do right?
"Apologize to her right now!!!"
Laurette yelled. Damien didn't feel any need to. Not yet. He walked to the corpse and dragged him to where the girls could see. "Look at his lips."
He stood up tall, pointing their attentions. They all looked reluctantly. They saw the blue stain on his lips.
"So what?!!"
Laurette wasn't having it. She couldn't bring herself to admitting that her sister could do that. None of them could. Why should they?
"As I said earlier, the Cannibal didn't die from knife. If not from knife, he'd probably been poisoned."
"Poisoned?"
Everyone chorused.
"Since Evelyn has proven herself guiltless, and Mira supported her, then there's only one fact."
He paused for a while. He was trying so hard to remember where he'd seen that blue stain from before now. He couldn't quite place the thoughts.
"You all are not blind! Even the blind would agree that the stain on her fingers is identical to the one on the Cannibal's lips."
The girls weren't convinced yet. He needed time to think. But he knew that he didn't have forever to think.
03:11:02
He looked across the faces of the girls. They were so difficult to handle. He knew that little things impress them.
Suddenly, a realization dawned on him.
YES!!!!
"You poisoned him with the Acatius root!!!"
He recalled. The Acatius root had varieties. More of the blue flowers were planted about the fence of the Cannibal's village. "That's bullshit!!! How could you even --"
Mira dropped on her knees suddenly, crying. Laurette who had been defending her couldn't find her words anymore.
Mira grappled at Damien's legs, bawling her eyes out. Unable to look up at him.
OH YES! YES! I DID IT!!!
He was so glad that he finally resolved the case. But then the reality was a little cruel.
MIRA OF ALL PEOPLE? WHY WOULD SHE DO THAT?
He squatted and helped her up. He hugged her, holding unto her for a while, caressing her long hair. She kept bawling her eyes out, soaking his top with her tears.
When he was sure that she had had enough, he pulled her slowly away from himself.
"Why did you do it?"
She bursted out crying again. Damien sighed and pushed her slowly back into his chest.
IS SHE TRYING TO AVOID THE QUESTION?
He shook his head. He hated to admit that.
NO WAY. SHE ISN'T THAT KIND OF GIRL.
She pulled away from him and dropped on her knees.
"I'm so sorry. I realized that majority of the Cannibals were allergic to this. I confirmed it when one came to the castle yesterday. He didn't jump through the fence where the flowers were growing. So, I decided to confirm for myself. I didn't know that it would be this graphic."
"What!"
"Wow!!"
Damien had a lot of questions to ask. The problem was assembling the questions and asking them in the right order.
"As much as I am tempted to ask you how you were able to feed him the root, it's strange to think that the effect of the Acatius root bursted his che He looked away from her to Claire.
"What were you doing here point in time? With a knife. Were you also trying to prove something?"
"I got bored and wanted to take a walk. I always go around with a knife. I need to defend myself incase this brutes attack me."
All those were reasonable to Damien and the girls. But he didn't know why Claire admitted to the crime when she didn't do it. He asked.
"Why did you say you did it then? What were you trying to do? Take all the blame?"
"What does it matter? After all, nobody believes me. If I'd said I didn't, who would had believed me? Even you wouldn't!"
open. How strangely powerful!!!"
Though her words were not entirely true, Damien admitted to the facts she'd stated. He would had had tough time thinking otherwise when the seeming fact was right there in front of them. "We'll talk about this further when we get to the castle. Let's deal with these men first."
He was careful not to blame any of them. He didn't think he was in the position to do that, because he had made countless mistakes himself on the Island.
He walked to the Cannibals who were fumming in rage. He was quite surprised that they didn't break in and create a scene yet. He was proud of them. And was ready to listen to whatever they had to say. "One of my queens killed your brother. What do we do about it?"
He said so loudly that none of the girls would pretend not to have heard!
"Queens???"
They all chorused. Damien didn't mind.
The representative of the Cannibals dropped on his knees and the rest joined.
"Who am I or my brothers to speak before you, Lugal? Let alone give conditions. You're our king sent from Utopia. We trust in your Judgement. We believe you'll give us justice."
OH SHIT.
"What did they say?"
The girls didn't understand the Cannibals. The language triangle is thus;
Damien understands the language of Cannibals. The Cannibals don't understand the girls whenever they speak. But whenever Damien speaks, both parties understand him clearly. He was like a missing link. Damien sighed deeply, rumpling his hair. He looked at the girls, especially considering Mira.
SHE IS FRAGILE. I CAN'T BE CRUEL TO HER.
He looked back at the Cannibals.
I SHOULD GIVE THEM JUSTICE.
He dropped his gaze.
WHAT TO DO?
He came to a quick decision.
"This is my sentence."
All the girls were so tense. He could tell. Was it strange that a deep part of him was enjoying this?
"The rite for the dead would be done to honor the deceased."
The girls nodded. The Cannibals copied what the girls did.
"Mira will watch them start and finish the rite. Alongside me."
The girls mumbled amongst themselves, but none of them them dared to speak up.
"Isn't that worst that killing her?"
Laurette had a demon living in her.
"Should I kill her then?"
Damien snapped.
"No no, please. Ignore Laurette."
Evelyn pleaded.
"Follow me."
He called at Mira who did. She was clumsy and scared. He signalled the Cannibals to go carry the corpse for the rites.
"We do the rite immediately."
He announced. The girls followed, grumbling.
