Convenient Marriage: Mr. Nelson's Love Trap

Chapter 22: Reluctant to Look into It

“Mom, I’m sorry. Please don’t leave me...”
Dolores’ words stunned Matthew; he looked down at her arms wrapped around his neck. His tender gaze fell on her face and
she looked to be in immense pain and was close to hysterics.
Matthew frowned. “Dolores?”
Dolores couldn’t hear him. She appeared to be in a daze. She looked very troubled, but then very quickly, she came to her
senses, let go of Matthew, and fell into a deep sleep. Matthew slowly straightened up, gazed at her for a couple of seconds
before turning and leaving the room.
Helen sat on the sofa, holding a glass so tight her hand shook. Every second Matthew was in Dolores’ room was torture for her.
Didn’t that woman need to take care of her mother in the hospital? Why did she have time to come back?
Helen knew about Abbott going to investigate Dolores and that was why Helen sent someone to A Country ahead of Abbott’s
man. She’d managed to kill the woman who’d given Dolores the business . She made it look like the woman jumped to her
death. It was also the reason why Abbott couldn’t find out the truth of what happened that night.
Helen used all her energy and resources to prevent Matthew and Dolores from spending time together. She’d paid all the people
in Dolores’ mother’s apartment complex to gossip and slander Jessica and Dolores, resulting in Jessica’s hospitalization. With
Jessica hospitalized, Dolores would have less time to spend with Matthew. But she hadn’t expected Dolores to arrive home so
quickly.
Matthew even carried her into the house. Helen became distraught when she thought about that. As a result, she forgot to retain
her composure. When Matthew came out of the room, he could plainly see the anger in Helen’s expression and walked over to
her silently.
Helen, noticing Matthew, stood up and blurted out a question. “Is Ms. Flores ill?”
Matthew didn’t answer immediately and sat on the sofa. He crossed his slender legs and slowly looked up at Helen indifferently,
not revealing his thoughts.
Helen was gripped with anxiety as she didn’t understand Matthew’s mannerisms.
She cautiously tried again. “Matthew...”

“What?” He grinned, “What’s up?”
It didn’t seem like anything was amiss. Helen composed herself and sat beside him. Since he didn’t seem to mind her presence,
her anxiety eased considerably.
“Here is the contract for the land at Repulse Bay,” Abbott said, handing the file to Matthew.
The reason Helen went to the villa with Abbott was that she heard that Matthew wanted the contract for the parcel of land.
The land of Repulse Bay was prime as it was waterfront with a hill. It was ideal for tourist and resort development, which was the
reason why it was so highly sought after.
Helen became worried when Matthew suddenly wanted to see the contract. Randolph Flores had once gone to the KY Group
office because he wanted that piece of land, but Matthew simply ignored him and didn’t grant him a meeting.
Dolores was Randolph’s daughter, so Helen worried Matthew would give it to the Flores Group because of their relationship. She
didn’t care for the parcel of land, but she was concerned about how Matthew was treating Dolores.
“Didn’t you decide to have an auction for this piece of land?” Helen asked.
Although her question was straightforward, Matthew could clearly detect her motive in such a simple question.
But instead of exposing her, he placed his arm over her shoulders, “Helen, you’ve changed.”
Helen was stunned. What did he mean?
“I... What changed?” Helen asked, puzzled.
Matthew pinched her chin and looked at her, “You would never have asked such a question in the past.”
Helen paused as she looked into his eyes. She’d never seen such coldness in his eyes and felt increasingly anxious.
“I...” She suddenly lost control of her usual obedient and sensible self. “I’m afraid because... because...”
She struggled out of Matthew’s embrace and covered her face with both her hands and continued in a broken tone. “I’m afraid
you’ll give this parcel of land to Ms. Flores. I’m afraid you will love her because she is your wife. I’m afraid you don’t want me
anymore...” Helen cried bitterly.

Matthew had never seen her behaving in such a way. He closed his eyes and frowned deeply with a very profound expression
no one, not even him, could understand. After a while, Helen’s cry became sobs. She knew she needed to compose herself, but
there were also times she needed to use her tears and pity to secure a man’s heart.
Matthew took a deep breath and opened his eyes. He reached out to pull her into his embrace again. “Do you really feel so
insecure?”
Helen leaned into him and sobbed. “I’m just afraid of losing you.”
Matthew sighed. “You won’t.”
He knew she had motives and ploys and wasn’t as pure as she seemed. But she’d been with him for many years and he wasn’t
ready to look deeply into it.
*****
The ringing of her phone roused Dolores from her sleep. It was a message from Sampson. The message contained a photo of
one of the neighbors in Jessica’s apartment complex. From the photo, they appeared to be talking to a woman. The woman had
her back to the camera, but Dolores felt she seemed rather familiar but she couldn’t recognize her immediately. Then suddenly
something erupted from her stomach.
“Urgh...”
She ran out of the bedroom and into the bathroom, leaned over the washbasin, and dry heaved.
In the sitting room, Dolores’ sudden appearance stunned Abbott. She rushed into the bathroom but didn’t close the door and was
vomiting in agony.
“Ms. Flores is pregnant,” Helen said, listening to Dolores’ non-stop heaving.
She assumed Matthew wasn’t aware of it and intentionally continued. “It must be that man who she hugged that day.”
Helen purposely named a ‘father’ of the child inside Dolores. That way, Matthew would hate her even more.
Helen’s words left Abbott stunned. Had Matthew married a woman who was pregnant with someone else’s baby? Didn’t that
mean that she cuckolded him into marrying her? Abbott slowly raised his head to look at Matthew and thought Matthew would be
furious, but he was strangely calm.

Even Helen was in disbelief. Wouldn’t he be angry and hate her?
“Matthew...”
Matthew leaned back into the sofa, clearly not wanting her to speak, so Helen could only shut her mouth and sit in silence.
Although Dolores wanted to vomit, each time she tried, there wasn’t anything to vomit and she could only dry heave.
After the wave of nausea passed, Dolores rinsed out her mouth and walked out of the bathroom. Only then did she realize
people were sitting in the living room and Helen was in Matthew’s embrace. She didn’t want to interfere and turned to head back
to her room.
But, in her mind, Helen’s image triggered a memory. She turned to look at Helen, then looked at the picture on her phone.
Chestnut-colored curls, similar height. She suddenly glared. The person who paid her neighbors was Helen?
Dolores thought about how she was framed and Jessica was harmed and Dolores suddenly understood what had happened.
Helen must’ve hated Dolores for marrying Matthew and taking what she thought was hers. That had to be the reason why she
paid for her neighbors to hurt her intentionally and ended up causing her mother to become mentally unstable.
The more Dolores thought, the more the pain inside her churned...
