Chapter 14: No Longer Understand Her
“What is that?” Dolores asked, even more confused.
Matthew got up from his chair and strode toward her, the lighting in the room making him nothing more than a silhouette. His
footsteps were steady and slow. Within a moment, he loomed over Dolores and spoke to her in a low voice.
“You’re still my wife by law so you should refrain from being intimate with other men.”
He didn’t care what happened to their marriage in less than a month. As long as they were a married couple, he wouldn’t tolerate
being cheated on. That was his limit and his dignity as a man was on the line.
Dolores didn’t know how to take his word. When was she being intimate with other men?
She responded immediately. “Haven’t you slept with other women here as well? Should I be demanding the same on you as your
wife?”
Matthew’s creases on his forehead deepened. “I didn’t sleep with another woman.”
Dolores was momentarily stunned. She was sure Helen had spent the night the day before. Who would truly believe they didn’t
end up sleeping together? However, she suddenly realized that whether he did or didn’t sleep with other women, it had nothing
to do with her, anyway.
Matthew’s expression was growing uglier by the minute. What was he thinking?
Dolores didn’t want their relationship to turn sour, so she softened her tone. “I will try to abide by your demands. Shall I...”
She waved the document in her hand to show her intentions, fearing she wasn’t being obvious enough.
Matthew mumbled a response, but he failed to conceal the tinge of anger in his voice. He wasn’t mad at Dolores, but instead, he
was mad at himself. Why had he explained himself to her, anyway? Was he crazy? He found himself extremely irked by his
response to her lately. The feeling of discomfort almost morphed into one of disgust.
*****
Since Dolores had secured a job working at the restaurant, she had to finish translating the documents as soon as possible.
When the clock struck midnight, she was only halfway done, but she was already struggling to stay awake. She decided to try to
stay awake, she’d head down to the living room. At that time of night, the whole villa was shrouded in a deep silence. Matthew
and Coral were probably sound asleep and would’ve been awake for a while.
She placed the documents on the table and poured herself a cup of water in the kitchen. She put the cup on the table as well
and sat down on the floor while continuing her translation task.
*****
Matthew woke up feeling rather thirsty, so he went downstairs to pour himself a glass of water in the middle of the night. Seeing
Dolores still translating his documents, he couldn’t help but frown. However, he said nothing as he passed by her. Dolores
noticed his presence as well, but didn’t immediately greet him.
Matthew was used to living alone, so when he saw a cup of water on the table, he instinctively picked it up and started to drink it.
“Hey—”
Dolores wanted to remind him that she was using that cup, but to her dismay, Matthew was already gulping water from it. She
wasn’t able to continue her sentence anymore.
Matthew eyed her briefly and noticed she was staring at him hesitatingly. He continued staring at her face for several seconds
before shifting to the cup in his hands. Under the faint glow of the table lamp, he saw a faint smudge of lipstick on the edge of the
cup. The edge where he had just been drinking from. He was drinking from a cup that had been used by someone else.
Combined with Dolores’ reaction, Matthew deduced that the person was probably her.
Dolores stared at the floor, pretending nothing out of the ordinary was happening. However, she felt her face growing hot. They
were too unfamiliar with each other, so the simple gesture of him sharing her cup was a bit too intimate for her.
Although he hadn’t done it on purpose, Dolores still felt embarrassed by the fact.
Matthew’s lips quivered slightly as he licked his lips. He didn’t know what to make of the situation, so he simply finished the water
in one gulp.
He placed the cup back on the table and strode toward her. He noticed it was already one o’clock in the morning.
“Why aren’t you in bed?”
Dolores continued to look at the floor, not willing to raise her head. “I’m not sleepy yet.”
Matthew stared at her for a moment before turning around and heading back upstairs. When he reached the top of the stairs, he
remembered Dolores had mentioned going to his company for a job interview and failing to be selected. The whole thing felt odd
to him. After returning to his room, he picked up his phone and dialed Abbott’s number.
Abbott was fast asleep, so he was a little annoyed when the ringing of the phone woke him up. He grabbed the phone in
annoyance and, with a plethora of curse words swimming in his head. He was ready to lecture whoever dared to call him so late
in the night. However, once he saw the caller’s name, his frustration disappeared without a trace. He rubbed his eyes nervously
and answered the phone.
“Yes, Mr. Nelson.”
“Investigate the reason why the human resources department has denied the hiring of a translator recently.”
“Huh?” Before he could comprehend what he was being ordered to do, the line went dead.
Abbott stared at his phone for a long time. Why had the president called him for such a trivial matter?
A worried expression slowly formed on his face. Was he purposely disturbing his sleep for no reason? However, Abbot could
only keep those complaints to himself. He didn’t dare to delay carrying out Matthew’s orders.
*****
The next day, Coral woke up to find Dolores sprawling forward on the table and sleeping soundly. There was a huge pile of
papers strewn around her and Coral couldn’t understand anything written on them. She guessed that it was probably something
related to her work, and she let out a sigh.
“You shouldn’t overexert yourself like this without sleeping in a proper bed.”
Despite not understanding Dolores’ situation, Coral still fetched a blanket and covered Dolores with it.
At that moment, Matthew was walking down the stairs. Seeing Coral covering Dolores with a blanket, a quiet emotion sharpened
by the passage of time slowly overcame him.
He walked toward Dolores and bent down to pick up some of the papers. There were twenty-two pages in total, and she had
translated every page and written them flawlessly.
She had probably spent the entire night completing the translation. When had she finally fallen asleep? Matthew couldn’t help
stealing a glance at her.
Coral only let out a sigh, not knowing what she could do. So, she turned around and disappeared into the kitchen to prepare
breakfast.
*****
By the time Dolores woke up, she saw Matthew digging into his breakfast. She rubbed her eyes while trying to stand by bracing
herself against the table, but to her dismay, she found her legs were numb. She had to wait for the numbness to dissipate before
she could finally wake properly.
Then she headed to the bathroom to wash herself up and take a bath, hoping to wake herself up.
After dressing up, Dolores left her room and handed Matthew the stack of documents.
“They’re all done.”
She settled into her seat at the table to eat her breakfast.
After a pause, she added, “If you’re free, remember to pay me.”
She was afraid he would forget about paying her.
Matthew put down his coffee and stared at her for two seconds. “I don’t carry cash with me. Come find me at my office later on.”
After saying that, he got up.
Dolores took a sip of her milk and decided not to pursue the matter further. As long as he would pay her, she would have no
problems with the details.
The reason Dolores had been working so hard to complete the translation was because she had wanted nothing to affect her
new job.
After Matthew left, Dolores followed suit not long after.
She had to wear a uniform in the restaurant. Dolores wore a white shirt and a black vest. She put on a bowtie and a figure-
hugging skirt that exposed her long and slender legs.
*****
Helen was sitting at a table near the window. She was in high spirits since Matthew asked her out for a meal as just the two of
them.
Although Matthew had acknowledged the nature of their relationship by promising her he would marry her, he never took the
initiative in anything. She was the one who had done all the initiative.
“Matthew—”
“I heard you were the one who decided not to hire Ms. Flores for the translator job?”
He had learned about that fact from Abbott earlier in the afternoon.
It turned out Helen was the one who had her nose in the hiring process. Helen clutched the armrest of her chair hard. How had
he found out about it?
Matthew leaned against his chair and the sunlight poured onto him from the window. He lazily propped up his chin with his hand
while his gaze scrutinized her.
He no longer felt like he knew the woman in front of him, the one who had saved him by creating a potion for him.
