Chapter 21
Three months later: When Sam told him that she was selling the farm to pay him back he tried to talk her out of it. She argued that she wasn’t letting him pay her debt and the only way was to sell the property and pay him back. He finally gave in, but that was only because he planned on marrying her. So the money she planned on giving him would also be hers. He had no plans of keeping it for himself, after all, she would be his wife. It was time to propose to her, he had to come up with a plan, a romantic one that would sweep her off her feet.
Sam was at work, giving CJ the perfect opportunity to put his plan into action. He made a stop in town before heading to his parent’s place where he knew Parker was. His mom made him sit down to eat lunch with them.
Sitting at the table he took the ring out of his pocket, setting it down so the others could see it. Their eyes widened and smiles spread across their faces.
“I’m going to ask Sam to marry me.”
Dawn’s hands flew to her mouth and tears filled her eyes. “Oh CJ, it’s so beautiful and that stone in the middle, she’s going to love it.”
CJ smiled, holding the ring in his fingers. “Red is her favourite color. I need your help with setting the scene,” he said, looking at his father and Parker.
“Whatever you want son we’ll be there.”
Over lunch, he went through the plan, asking if they still had the battery-operated generator and radio. With each one assigned to a task, CJ left to go home to get the things he needed and headed back out.
He arrived home just as Sam was pulling into the driveway. He greeted her warmly with a deep and passionate kiss. “Get changed, I’m taking you somewhere.”
“Where?” she asked excitedly. He was behaving strangely, he was up to something and she was curious as to what it was.
“Never mind, just go get ready and wear the red dress.”
“Ok cowboy, slow down and let me shower first.”
He showered in the downstairs bathroom and was dressed waiting for her to get ready. He took the ring from his pocket and stared at it but shoved it back in when he heard her coming down the stairs. He noticed she was wearing heels so he went and got her cowboy boots. “Wear these instead,” he said, handing them to her.
“But CJ, they don’t really go with this dress.”
“Trust me, just wear them.”
“OK,” she answered. Rolling her eyes at him she removed her shoes and slipped on the boots. “Happy now?” she asked, shaking her foot up in his direction.
“Perfect,” he smiled back.
As they drove she glanced over at him, he seemed tense. “Is something wrong?”
“No, why do you ask?”
“You’re sweating and you look nervous. Wait, you’re not planning on taking me somewhere and killing me are you?”
CJ laughed and placed his hand on her knee. “I would never hurt you.” He pulled over and stopped the truck. Turning to her he held up a scarf. “I want to put this over your eyes.”
“Why?”
“It’s a surprise, now stop yapping and let me put it on you.”
“You better not be thinking of doing something kinky,” she said, turning her head and waiting till he was done. She heard him start the truck up and they drove for another ten minutes before he stopped.
“We’re here, just wait right where you are and I’ll come help you out.” Opening her door he helped her down from the truck. With his arms around her waist led her to the spot he had picked out. He removed her blindfold and watched her facial expressions.
Sam looked at the sight before her, she was in awe. There was a large blanket spread out on the ground. Champagne was chilling in a bucket of ice. A couple of containers holding food sat waiting to be eaten. She turned to him, tears in her eyes. “This is so romantic, you did this for me?”
“I had help. But wait, there’s more.” He went over to where a small radio was sitting and turning it on found a station that played nothing but soft, romantic songs. He lit the candles that surrounded the blanket. It wasn’t quite dark yet but he thought it would still be nice. Taking her hand helped her down. He sat next to her and poured them each a glass of champagne. “To us baby,” he said and they clinked glasses.
“This is so nice but why go to all this trouble?”
“I could have taken you to a fancy restaurant but I thought you might enjoy this. It’s a beautiful night and when it gets darker the stars will be out.”
She leaned back against him. “You did good Doc, this is perfect, I love it.”
“Are you hungry?” he asked, reaching for the containers.
“Starving, what do we have?”
“We have some pizza slices, stuffed mushrooms, potato salad and for dessert strawberries with a can of whip cream.” He grinned, holding the can. “We’ll save some of this for later in the bedroom.”
“You naughty man,” she said, cupping the back of his head drew him in for a kiss.
They ate, drank and fooled around on the blanket. As their kisses became more passionate he knew he had to stop before he went too far. He still had the most important part of the night to do. Taking her hand pulled her up.
“Dance with me.” He pulled her into his arms, her arms went around his neck and she rested her head on his shoulder. “I love you, Sam.”
Lifting her head she smiled back at him. “I love you too. It’s starting to get dark, we should go home so that I can show you just how much I love you.”
“We will soon, just a couple more dances.” He didn’t want this night to end as he held her tight in his arms. He took in the scent of her shampoo, it had a vanilla smell which he found very pleasing. His heart started beating so fast, he was becoming nervous as the time drew close. It was time.
He pulled away, his hands going around her waist. “It’s starting to get dark. I want you to close your eyes for me and don’t peek.”
“Why?” she asked suspiciously.
“God woman will you please for once just do what I ask without asking why?”
She did what he asked.
“That’s good, now don’t open them till I tell you to.” He went and flipped the switch on the generator. He waited a couple of minutes to make sure everything was working and went back to Sam and stood behind her. “OK baby, I have another surprise for you, open your eyes.”
She was speechless when she opened her eyes. Before her, one of the trees was lit up with bright white twinkling lights. Against the darkening night, they shone so brightly. “Oh CJ, it’s beautiful,” she said and turned to look at him. Her mouth dropped open when she saw him down on one knee, in his hand, he held a ring. “CJ,” she said in a whisper.
“Sam, I’ve been in love with you the second we met. I want to be the first thing you touch in the morning and the last thing you taste at night. Will you make me the happiest man in the world and say you’ll be my wife? Miss Samantha Cain, will you marry me?”
She didn’t have to think twice about it, she loved him more than life itself and wanted to spend the rest of her life with him. “Yes, yes I’ll marry you.”
Rising to his feet he took her hand and placed the ring on her finger, it was a perfect fit. Taking her face in his hands he looked into the depth of her eyes which were filled with love and mixed with her tears. “I love you Sam, more than life itself.” He then kissed her, slow and long.
When he finally released her from his vice-like grip and lips she looked at the diamond on her finger. “I love it, the stone in the middle is spectacular”
“I know red is your favourite color, that’s why I picked it.”
Curling her hands around the back of his neck she smiled at him, her heart brimming over with love for the man who stole her heart. “I love you so much and I promise to make you happy for as long as we live. I’m your’s CJ, heart, soul, and body.”
“I’m going to take you home and push your body to its limits as I make wild love to you.” Kissing her hand he told her to wait in the truck while he loaded up the generator and the rest of the stuff.
“Don’t take too long,” she said, getting in the truck she admired the ring. She was so happy he asked her to marry him, she would have said yes with or without the ring.
CJ was excited to get home and into bed to celebrate their engagement. But he was sorely disappointed when they arrived home to find his parents and Parker along with Dakota there waiting for them. The children were at home with a babysitter. He took one look at his friend and shook his head slowly at him. He had told Parker he wanted to be alone with Sam, this was his way of getting some payback for all the times he interrupted him and Dakota.
Champagne was popped and the women drooled over the ring while the men talked, CJ getting manly chest bumps from them.
“So she said yes son, I’m really happy for you both. I expect you to be a man, one that she can always count on. Treat her with respect and like a princess, and place her above all others.”
“Thanks, Dad. Growing up with you as a role model and seeing how you treated mom I can only hope to be half the husband you are to mom.” He gave him a hug, thanking him for being a good father.
“Yeah CJ, Dakota and I are so happy and glad you found the love of your life. I know you both will be very happy, she’s a wonderful girl and I know how much you love her.”
CJ looked over to where she was sitting, chatting happily with the two other women. “I don’t just love her, she owns me.” He went over and sitting on the arm of the sofa put his arm around her shoulders. “What are you ladies talking about?”
Sam looked at him, glowing she smiled. “About the wedding. I want the works, a church wedding, a white wedding dress and a party afterward.”
His heart melted at seeing her so happy. “Whatever you want, baby.”
CJ was wishing they’d all go home but instead, they stayed late, more champagne was consumed and Sam was getting a buzz on. He realized that sex that night was going to be out of the question, and he had Parker to thank for it.
Finally, they all left, Sam went and put her arms around him. She looked up at him with eyes that were glazed over, clearly intoxicated. “Let’s go to bed, you promised to make wild sex to me.”
“You go on up and get into bed. I’ll clean up this mess and join you soon,” he said, giving her a kiss and watching as her hips swayed when she walked away, God, he loved her ass. Taking the empty bottles and glasses into the kitchen he then turned off the lights and locked the doors and then headed upstairs.
He stood by the bed, looking down at her, she was fast asleep. Bending over he kissed her forehead, he then undressed and got into bed. He had planned on a night of lovemaking but that was not to be the case tonight. He was OK with that, but she had made it hard for him as she was naked under the covers. Leaning on his side, watching her sleep his words spoken softly so as not to wake her. “Why did you have to be naked? You have no idea how you are affecting me, how I want to touch you, I love you.”
She didn’t make it any easier for him when she murmured his name under her breath and snuggled up against him. With his arm around her he kissed the top of her head again and closed his eyes.
