City of Boneheads: Chapter 12
Clary ran to Jace’s room and knocked on his door. The door cracked open and Jace eyed her warily.
“I need to talk to you,” said Clary.
Jace saw that she was holding the DVD of The Notebook.
“No thanks,” said Jace. “I like you, but not that much.”
He began to shut the door, but Clary stopped it.
“The movie rained on me!” she said.
Jace just shrugged.
“Um, aren’t you surprised at all?” said Clary.
“All Shadowhunters have the power to interact physically with the content of movies.”
A loud roar came from behind Jace and Clary jumped back. She looked over Jace’s shoulder and saw the lion from the opening of the MGM movies sitting in the corner of Jace’s room.
“Oh sorry, that’s Leon,” said Jace. “I let him out of the DVD once in a while so he can get some exercise. Don’t try to pet him, though. He hasn’t eaten dinner.”
“Jace, think about it: if all Shadowhunters have the power to interact with movies, that means my mom had it, too,” said Clary. “That’s how she hid the Mortal Keg. She put it into a DVD!”
“Why would she do that? If the demons ever found her, they’d be sure to go through all her stuff.”
“But not the stuff our jerk neighbor Dorothea borrowed and never gave back.”
Jace’s eyebrows rose. “Tell me more,” he said.
“When I was like 7, my mom bought the DVD of Titanic,” said Clary. “But the next day, before we’d even gotten a chance to watch it, she loaned it to Dorothea. And like everything Dorothea borrows, she never gave it back! I asked Mom to get it back from her again and again, but she never seemed that anxious to do so. Now I realize why.”
“It’s a brilliant hiding place,” said Jace. “But if Dorothea will never give it back, how are we supposed to get it?”
Clary smiled. “She may be a terrible neighbor, but she’s also a lonely old lady. I think it’s time for a little viewing party.”
