Charmed By A Steel City Hustler

Chapter 3 — That Old Thing Back

Adonis:

"Lois call me back now! What has gotten into you lately?"

I pressed send for the message to be transmitted then disconnected the call. My marriage had hit a rough patch the past year. I can own up to my part. Being a partner at the law firm my dad started out in was always my dream growing up. I was not just handed the keys to the kingdom.

I had to prove my worth and earn respect. Once I got an inkling that the board was looking to promote me. Long days and nights away from home became normal. Lois knew how important this was to me and she used to support me one hundred percent without any back talk. A few months ago, she started getting brand new.

I loved my wife and would do anything to see her happy, but she was forgetting her place. A woman was to stand behind her man on the big choices made. Lois was making a name for herself at the office as well. I was damn proud of her, but it had gone to her head.

Contrary to what she may have heard at the water cooler. I was not having an affair with anyone at work. I learned long ago from my father not to shit where I ate. Yes, I may have done some harmless flirting with a few clients to seal a deal, but that's it.

I looked down at my shoes and agreed with Lois' assumption from earlier and change them. The message bell went off on my phone, and I picked it up. A sly smile crept up to my face. The pictures sent to me were just what the doctor ordered. Having a private investigator on speed dial was amazing.

I flipped through the flicks and shook my head. Then I pulled up the edible arrangements site and ordered a basket for my wife. I was irritated this morning and took out some frustrations that were not for her. I was going to play my role with Lois, until my plans were at the point of no return.

She hit below the belt with the dick comment. Lois was not too far from the truth with her statement. We were going to have to talk about that soon though. I had not cheated on her in over four years. My father said that scandal would ruin my future.

I had to tread lightly if I did wander into another bed. I had a brief fling with a woman from my past, but it went nowhere. She was not as polished enough for my world. Be honest she could never fill Lois' high heels.

Lois was a good woman but being faithful had turned me sour towards her. There was so much ass being thrown at me daily. It killed me not to take a dip in the those forbidden oceans. Lois was very strong headed and would not settle for being just a housewife.

She couldn't just be beautiful arm candy like her sister Lola. Now that fine piece of ass was perfect trophy wife material. Lola just needed a few classes on proper etiquette and dress for high society.

I finished getting my shoes on and went out the door. The garage was locked from the outside, and Lois had the motion sensor in her vehicle. That was one of the many childish acts she would pull. That mess pissed me off every time. One of the reasons I would address her in a scolding manner. I preferred to drive my SUV to work just in case I had to treat clients to lunch. My phone began to ring, and I picked up instantly thinking it was my wife. "You got some nerve behaving like that this morning."

"I love you too Donnie, but you have me mixed up with your little girlfriend."

Yasmine Tate, a high-profile client, who was facing a laundry list of white-collar crimes. She was the perfect yin to my yang business wise. She was constantly throwing her paid pussy at me, but I wasn't biting. Yasmine was married to a man who was rumored to be high ranking in a drug cartel.

Yasmine's real estate business was legal, and she came from money, but that didn't bother me at all. My father stated that taking her case would turn heads in the political arena. He stated that I needed to conquer the white man's world first before running my own empire. I needed a rolodex of connections in different professions across the board to be a king in the legal field.

"Mrs. Tate what can I do for you today?"

I asked her while making a right hand turn on to the parkway north. The traffic was surprisingly light this morning. Yasmine went on about a deposition and how there were inaccuracies to her story. There was nothing wrong with her statement other than the fact that I pulled out all the lies. I have bent the law in the past for clients that were not as high profile as Yasmine.

There were eyes on me all over the city regarding this case and losing was not an option. Getting caught doing sneaky under handed shit was career suicide. What I wasn't going to do was lie under oath for a client that could do more harm than good to my reputation. She was not that special and needed to realize that.

"Mrs. Tate, we have been through this already I cannot omit pertinent facts regarding your travel time. That is vital to the case, now if your companion would just c-"

"Oh, my look at the time I have a ten o'clock meeting coming in. Honey just look over them again thanks ciao!"

Yasmine hung up in my ear quick as hell. I just shook my head and focused back on the road. Yasmine needed to get her story straight with all her extracurricular activities and soon. The moment she lied on that stand, and I knew for a fact she was going to. I was recusing myself from the case, which was better just quitting.

I may have bitten off more than I could chew with her. My father has never steered me wrong. Becoming mayor or senator one day was his dream for me. I had heard his speech on being a powerful black figure for so long as a child, that it was I could think about.

I did everything right and never tarnished my reputation growing up. I missed out on a lot of regular fun trying to become the next president. All that sacrifice was starting to pay off and no one was going to take that away from me. If I could just get Lois to fall in line and have a baby, everything would be as it was planned to be.

My phone rang again, and I looked at the screen to see Wife flash across the dashboard. "Hello."

I played it smooth not wanting to seem overly anxious at the sound of her voice.

"Donnie the edible arrangements are beautiful, thank you baby. I love them and I would be happier if you had not acted like an ungrateful ass this morning!"

"Lois what the hell!"

I yelled back and heard a bunch of cackling on the other end. She had me on speaker phone for her nosey coworkers to hear. I heard Marie a legal secretary saying that we were crazy. She set me up for failure with that one. I played my role and apologized to her.

"Sorry honey it's been a rough couple of months but know that you are always my number one priority."

I had to bite my tongue on what I really wanted to say. The swooning could be heard, and Lois cleared her throat to address me again.

"Thank you, baby and I promise to be more supportive of your career dealings. Now what would you like me to order for lunch."

Just like that we had mended the broken fences and were back on good terms. I was not feeling it at all. The whole situation felt like a charade. Lois was dead ass in the wrong for acting out about some damn food morning.

Granted I was not completely innocent, but there was something going on with my wife. The pictures I received this morning were proof that every married couple had secrets. The secrets I were keeping could destroy my life if I did not keep them in check. Now I was beginning to wonder what else was Lois keeping from me.
