Chapter 98: A Deal
Proofread by Peter Gong
Aunt Lee looks at Wang Feng cautiously and dares not to say yes. She says: "What are you talking about. I don't understand and I don't want to make a deal with you. Just leave." She moves and shows Wang Feng the door. The latter stares at her with amusement and doesn't take her action seriously. Wang Feng sits on the couch leisurely with her legs crossed, showing her a kind of superiority. "You are old enough to retire. But you are still working so hard every day. If I'm not mistaken, you serve other three households at the same time except Yu Fei's, right?" Upon hearing her words, aunt Lee changes her face at once. In panic, she closes the door, and walks to Wang Feng and sits beside her. She looks very flustered and her eyes move uneasily. She asks: "How do you know that?"
When aunt Lee applied for this job, Gu Yi only had one requirement for her, that is, she must have plenty of time to take care of Yu Fei. Aunt Lee hesitated because of this requirement, but the job was really profitable in terms of money. She thought it over again and again and finally she took the job without telling him about her other jobs. She is quite astonished when Wang Feng visits suddenly and uncovers her secret. That Wang Feng might tell the secret to Yu Fei and Gu Yi also makes her worried. Feeling hesitant, Aunt Lee takes a look at the bedroom of Yu Fei and asks Wang Feng tentatively: "What deal were you just talking about?"
Wang Feng smiles proudly. She knows exactly how things will be. She holds aunt Lee's hands and pretends to be as close as her sister, and she says: "Sis, we are both mothers. I know how you feel and what you are stuck into. What I want you to do is quite simple. Just put a bit of this into Yu Fei's food every day." She takes out a small bag filled with white powder and hands it over to aunt Lee. The latter gazes at the bag nervously, then looks up at Wang Feg. She dares not to take it. Wang Feng doesn't give her the chance to say no, and she simply takes her hand, puts the bag on it and pushes her hand to hold the bag tightly.
"It's very easy. Just do as I told you. And I will cover your son's medical expenses." Upon hearing her promise, aunt Lee raises her head and looks at Wang Feng with a pair of startled eyes. The reason why she works so hard is to pay her son's medical bills. Three years ago, her son was hit by a car and the driver flew away. He became paralyzed and has been lying on bed since then. Doctors said that there are blood clots in his brain and a craniotomy needs to be done. But they don't have enough money to pay for it, so the surgery has been delayed forever. Now her son's condition goes worse and the surgery can't save him. Wang Feng is like an experienced hunter and she catches aunt Lee as easily as catching an animal. Aunt Lee has to comply with her order.
She nods her head slowly. And Wang Feng makes a contented smile. "Good choice. Poor parents. You don't want your son to lie on bed forever. He is so young." Aunt Lee doesn't speak a word. She lowers her head and shrugs because of pain. Her sobbing does not move Wang, and she quickly writes a check and puts it before Aunt Lee."Here is a check of one million Chinese Yuan (about 140, 000 dollars). And it's just the deposit. I'll pay you the rest of the remuneration after you make it." Aunt Lee takes the check and she holds it so tight that her fingers become pale. Finally, she doesn't speak, which shows obviously that she accepts it. Wang Feng puts on her sunglasses and walks out extremely conceitedly. Her laugh echoes in the whole building.
After she leaves, aunt Lee stares at the check for a long time and she lowers her head because she yields to her destiny in the end. She puts the check on a drawer carefully and then walks to the bedroom. A strong smell of Chinese medicine drills into her nostrils. For so many years, the bedroom has been full of that smell. She thinks she already gets used to it. But she finds out today that she hates it so much. Sitting beside the bed, aunt Lee dwells her eyes on her son's numbed face for a while. She can't help but recall that her son was her back-up a few years ago. Every time he went back from school to enjoy the holiday, he would bring back various of rewards he got. Everyone lived in the vicinity knew that her son was outstanding and filial. "Mom, rest assured. I will make you live a prosperous life in no time." Her son always patted his chest and told her so when he went back home, as she remembers.
But all her hopes were ruined when the car hit her son and ran away. She got to the bottom of the hell at once and there was no light. "Son, I promise, I will get you well." Aunt Lee holds her son's hand under the blanket with her wrinkled hands. His big handa are not as soft as before. They are dry and weak. She cries out in a depressed voice in the tiny bedroom. She feels painful and is extremely desperate. In the city, some people weep with grief and some people laugh with joy.
Tan Lin comes to Ko's company to visit Ko Chen. It's quite easy and familiar for her. All the staff, including the receptionist and the secretary, know her. They greet her respectfully: "Hello, miss Tan." Tan Lin is quite satisfied with their respect. She moves her attractive eyes and shares with them some deserts she brings. Then she walks into the office of Ko Chen in a charming way. He is reading the project file the "cat" just emailed him when he hears the door opens. He is quite mad and is about to lose his temper. But when he looks up and sees Tan Lin, he takes his words back and says: "There you are." Tan Lin wears a perfect make-up. She makes a cute smile, shows him the desert and says: "I bring you love desert." Ko Chen knew what tricks she played behind him not long ago. Now when he faces this woman, he can barely treat her as usual. But at least he is good at making a poker face. So, Tan Lin doesn't read anything different from his look. She takes the desert out of the box and puts them on the waiting table. She does so like presenting something especially treasured. Ko Chen doesn't move. He fixes his eyes on her and can't figure out why that little innocent and naïve girl grew up to be like this. She is so sophisticated now that he can't read her mind anymore. When Tan Lin lays out her deserts and turns around, she finds that Ko Chen is looking at her. She tilts her head like a child and beckons: "Come on." Upon hearing her words, Ko Chen takes off his glasses and covers the file. Tan Lin looks at the file casually and it takes her no more than one second. Then she makes a big smile to hide her thoughts. She takes Ko Chen's hand when he comes to her and she asks unconcernedly: "Chen, anything goes wrong in your company?"
