Chapter 17
After our romantic dinner, Cain took me on a stroll through the village. It was almost dark and the street lights were starting to turn on. We walked hand and hand. We decided to walk back to the house that was the size of a freaking castle.
“It feels like yesterday that all of this was just grass and trees. As God made more humans they built more and more. Thankfully we were able to keep this village without turning into big spaces like the cities.”
“Would you ever move back here?”
“I don’t know. Maybe I’ll come back after all this is over with. But enough about all that. I have a surprise for you.”
I raise an eyebrow as he leads me back to the house. I don’t know what I was expecting to walk into but birthday Decorations around the living room and Cynthia struggling to hold up a balloon one and nine aren’t it. Mira looks like she’s forcing herself to care, Patrick is holding a couple of gift bags and like a dumbass it hits me. It’s my birthday. With everything that’s been going one, I completely forgot. I’m nineteen today. Holy macaroni. The fact that I completely forgot my birthday shows how stressed out I’ve been.
I smile up at Cain. “Thank you.”
Boldly, I lean up and kiss him on the lips. I should have known he would try to deepen it and grab ass. I break the kiss when Patrick makes immature gagging sounds.
“You would think your relax would be better than that,” I said with a smartass smile.
Patrick rolls his eyes but I can see him fitting a grin. They put the balloon and gifts down to hug me. We all go to the couches and they watch gimme as I open my presents. The first I open is from Cynthia and it’s a pandora charm bracelet with a few best friend charms. The next one is from Patrick. I’m expecting a gag gift that usual but instead it’s a framed picture of the three of us at our high school graduation party. It was only a year ago but for some reason, it seems like decades. I feel a bundle of emotions just for the photo.
“Don’t start the waterworks. It’s just a picture.” Patrick said.
“Shut up, I’m just happy.”
“Here.” Mira hands me present and I open it to find a black satchel.
At first glance, I thought maybe she just grabbed something out of her closet before we left but when I turn the bag over it has initials on it. E.C. Elisa Clermont. This is my mom’s bag.
“How did you?”
“I found it in my mom’s closet a while back.” she shrugs like it’s no big deal but we both know it is.
“Thank you.”
“My turn,” Cain said.
One of his housekeepers hands him a black box. He hands it to me and I’mm expecting jewelry but I’m surprised when it’s a knife. The hilt of the knife has the same red ruby as my necklace. It looks old and worn but still beautiful.
“It was Adam’s knife.”
I gently close the box back up. “I can’t keep it then.”
I knew how much Adam meant to Cain. Adam may not have been Cain’s real father but from how Cain talked about him, I know he meant everything to Cain.
“Don’t worry. That wasn’t his only knife. Just one of many. It’s made from the same stone as your necklace. The same stone that surrounds these grounds. These stones were the only thing Adam took from Eden. He would want you to have the Elsie. To protect you when I’m unable to.”
I kiss him again because dammit if he doesn’t know how to turn me into an emotional wreck with just a few words. I’m probably the most gullible person in the world to fall for his sob stories but I can’t help it. Every time he even mentions Purgatory I get this sick feeling as we experienced it together. Not just because I saw that dream of him there but it’s something more.
“Okay, enough of that. I say we get wasted tonight to forget about the days ahead.” Mira said.
“Agreed.” Cynthia, Patrick, and I said in unison.
Cain was busy texting on his phone.
“Is everything okay?” I asked as Patrick opens a bottle of Champagne.
He turns his phone off. “Everything is fine. Just updating Adelaide. She gets worried.”
“Are you worried?”
He shakes his head. “I feel stupid more than anything. My own Loyal was buried in my backyard and I didn’t even think to check there.”
I grab ahold of his hand. “Like you said Lilith likes to play games. She probably knew you’d overlook the most obvious place.”
“Enough depressing talk. Let’s enjoy your birthday.” Cain said but it sounded like he just wanted to avoid the subject further.
“Let’s play a drinking game,” Cynthia suggested
I groan. “Let’s not.”
“Oh come on. Don’t act like you don’t love to play never have I ever.”
“What never have I ever?” Cain asked.
Cynthia laughs. “I keep forgetting about the whole Purtoraty thing. Okay, so the game is simple. An example would be never had I ever had a dog. If you have had a dog then you drink if you haven’t then you don’t.”
“How do you win?”
“Usually we just stop when someone can barely make a sentence,” Patrick said around a laugh.
“Well, let’s get it started shall we?”
“You’re going to play?’
He looks over at me. “You don’t want me to?”
“Of course I do.”
“Thi calls for harder liquor.”
Patrick gets up and goes to another room like he knows this place. He comes back with a bottle of expensive brown liquor. He grabbed some shot glasses too and put them on the table in front of us. He pours shots for us and hands them around.
“I’m going first,” Cynthia said. “Never have I ever broken a bone.”
We all drink and Parrick pulls another round of shots.
“Never have I ever lost my virginity,” Mira said.
We all drink but Cynthia. My eyes widen at her.
“What about big nose?”
“Who?”
“You know the guy you use to go on and on about. You even forced me to lunch with the two of you.”
“You mean Tim?”
“Yeah, him. I thought you did the deed?”
“This is something a brother shouldn’t hear about his sister,” Patrcvik complained but we shush him.
“We were going to but…”
“But what?”
She turns her head like she’s embarrassed.
“Just tell me.”
“He kept bumping his nose with mine every time we kissed.”
I tried my hardest not to laugh but it overcame me and I laugh so hard I have to wipe tears from my eyes.
“Shut up. How about you tell us about your virginity story.”
That stops my laughing. “Next question everyone.”
“No, I’d like to hear this as well,” Cain said.
“Promise not to laugh?” they don’t promise and I sigh as the tell the story. “ I was sixteen and he seemed to know what he was doing. He talked a big game until it was time to have sex. His first mistake was that he confirm was way too big. Then when he went down on me his glasses kept getting in the way so he took them off and couldn’t see what he was doing. I tried to push his head in the right spot but he just wasn’t getting it. I eventually pulled him back up and he presented to get inside me for all of ten seconds. To make matters even worse, his mom walked in on us. I locked eyes with her and it was the most horrific thing I’ve ever experience.”
They only last ten seconds before they laughing and we’re asking question after question to each other. I find out Mira had a third nipple before she convinced Aunt Michelle to do a spell to remove it. Patrick has only been with two guys before the one guy I caught him with. Cynthia is far less experienced than she acts. And Cain lost his virginity to an older girl in the village he and his family lived in. He made sure to explain to us that there was no incest involved between him and his sister unlike in the Bible. Cain also let it slip out that he’s Lucifer’s son. It must be the alcohol because when they heard him, they didn’t even react.
“How is it being the prince of Hell?” Cynthia asked as she leaned on her twin’s shoulder.
Cain shrugs. “I mean the whole getting anything I ever wanted was good but it’s only so long before you start to wonder if anyone ever even liked you or were just nice to you for your title.”
“Did Awan ever come to visit you?” I asked.
Awan was Cain’s sister who was killed by Lucifer before he was put into Purtorary.
“Yeah, once. She was scared but she wanted to see me so she put on a brave face for me. Surprisingly she wasn’t angry towards me that my monster had killed Abel. She was more scared of me. Awan was always like that. Trusting and always worried about others. These worried didn’t deserve people like them. The things I’ve seen and done, I know if they were alive they’d be disgusted with me. But they would still love me with everything they had.”
Everyone seems to sober up at Cain’s answer. One of the things I like about Cain is that he’s never held back with me. Sure he’s secretive but I trust him. I’ve only known him for two months and yet it feels like years.
“Well, I’m done,” Patrick said, he got off the couch and headed to his room. Mira and Cynthia followed behind them.
“Did I make it awkward?” Cain asked.
“Of course not. We all have our family problems trust me.” I said. “We should get to bed.”
Cain nods and lets me pull him to our room. After stripping down to our underwear, we get underneath the covers and Cain pulls me to him. He sets his chin on stop if my head.
“Promise me you won’t leave me. Promise me no matter how much I fuck up, you’ll stay by my side.”
Even though I don’t know what the future will hold, right now in his arms, I want to give him the world.
“I promise.”
