Chapter 1
BORA
It was a cold night and darkness surrounded me... When I thought I was lost and the sky would fall over me, I saw an angel... In that moment I saw my future covered in roses and golden waves flowing towards me... It was as if my brain was playing something back to me so I wouldn't panic.
"Can you hear me? I can't reach you," I whispered softly, trying to reach out to the angel, but it was no use. I was caught up in the darkness and there was nothing that could save me.
"Please take me with you... Don't let me die in the darkness," I whispered again. I knew that it would soon be the end for me.
I was lost forever and there was no one who could help me. Not even the angel in the high heavens, not even he could help me...
My eyes grew heavier and heavier until they closed and I could see nothing but total darkness.
It was as if all my bones were breaking into pieces and my lungs felt as heavy as lead. The pain was unbearable, but instead of a sound, there was only a silent scream.
"Oh angel... Help me," I tried to say, but nothing came...
LORYS
"Take them away, every last one of them! They'll be lucky if they're allowed to work, they have no other choice," I ordered my wolves angrily and looked around.
War time - many dead, great losses and nightmares.
The war with the neighbouring pack was over. We had won the battle. But what did that mean?
Men, women and children had died in the war and what remained were memories. Terrible memories.
It wasn't my first battle, but something told me it would be my last.
"Alpha, we found a she-wolf on the edge of the border, she's still alive, but her condition is bad," my Beta called out.
"You'll be doing her a favour if she dies, what do you think? Just leave her behind," I ordered him and had enough to do. I had to rush to the aid of the other males in my pack.
"Alpha... she could recover and work just as well as the other prisoners, our losses aren't really any better..." he tried to convince me and he wasn't wrong. Wolves had become rare and a stupid discussion had led to us tearing each other apart.
"Take them with you," I ordered him, trying to help my own injured wolves. Blue Moon was strong, they had fought to the bitter end, but they weren't strong enough to defeat us. But he who will not hear must feel.
It was the eighteenth century and mortals called it the transition from the Renaissance to the Modern Age.
The discussion I spoke of earlier was that we were denied the land we had asked for in order to have room for our wolves. I asked politely and wouldn't take no for an answer, I offered them gold because I knew the pack didn't need that much acreage. Their alpha decided against it and in the end his severed head lay on the ground.
Sad, now we had the whole land to ourselves, didn't we? Such a shame... At least he would have got away alive if only he'd gone for it.
I, Lorys Bennett, was the alpha of the Circle pack. I had a reputation for being evil personified. I was the one who took everything and was afraid of nothing.
Nobody could compete with me.
Full of pride, I made my way back to our castle, because the war had been won and now we would celebrate that the moon goddess was on our side and had once again given us her blessing.
"LONG LIVE ALPHA LORYS!" my beta began to shout and the other wolves joined in the chorus.
A grin spread across my lips and even the pain I felt from the wounds was blown away.
Oh yes, long live Lorys, the alpha, the king.
A loud growl came from my throat and made the forest floor tremble, whereupon my wolves howled again and expressed their joy.
We walked the long path along the edge of the forest, the prisoners in chains behind us, carrying the wounded.
When we reached our castle, the howling of the wolves was great, the women and children were happy to see us again and they had prepared a feast. That suited me very well, because after such a battle we were very hungry.
I was washed and combed again. After arriving, I went to my room and straight into the bathtub to get rid of the dirt and blood. Two women from my pack helped me.
"That must have been bad, just look at the wounds on his back," one of them said to the other, while I rolled my eyes with a grin.
"That's the least of it, it'll be healed in ten minutes," I replied, savouring the warm water on my skin.
I was almost two metres tall and broadly built. My black hair was combed back and my three-day beard looked well-groomed again. After the women had helped me get dressed, I stood in front of the mirror in my trousers and shirt, my royal robe was placed around my shoulders and my crown was a must.
The servants stood next to each other and looked at me. "Is there anything else we can do for her, Alpha?" the eldest asked me and I shook my head. "No, you've done everything. You can go," I replied and thanked her with a small nod.
They both disappeared from the room and I was left alone.
I had everything, the gold, the land, the wealth and much more, except for one thing. It was the right woman at my side that I was missing. It was important for my pack to have a successor and I had given myself until my 35th birthday to find my mate, if I hadn't found her by then, I would take another she-wolf as my wife. The end. There was nothing I could do about it, and the fact that I was already thirty-four years old didn't make things any better.
I was almost knocked over by my beta Leonard as I ran out of my room. "Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to bump into you," he finally said. He was holding a book with a dark red velvet cover.
I frowned, "What's this?" I asked him, getting curious. I was known for having a huge library and loved to immerse myself in books in my free time.
"The woman I found was holding it very tightly in her arms ... I thought I'd take the book with me and read it," he said, looking at me.
I felt a tingling in my fingers and felt the need to snatch the book: "Well, you won't mind if I read it in front of you? I've already finished my book and would have to start something new anyway," I raised my eyebrows and looked at the book.
Leonardo laughed quietly to himself "I thought you'd be curious", he handed me the book and winked "I wasn't actually planning to read it", he finally said and I took it and looked at it.
Bora's diary
was engraved on a golden plate. This she-wolf must have had a high rank, because such bindings were rarely seen, they were very expensive.
I was now curious and eager to read her diary. I went back to my room and put the diary on my bedside table before leaving the room to go back to Leonardo.
"What's the situation now?" I enquired.
He shrugged his shoulders and sighed softly: "We may have won this war, but we have also suffered many losses ... Many of the badly wounded wolves have succumbed to their wounds. We have buried them all properly and will hold a small ceremony in their memory tomorrow before sunset.
I nodded in understanding and the hairs on the back of my neck stood up at his words.
"That bastard Gabriel... If only he had done what we asked of him, none of this would have happened," I muttered angrily to myself. I couldn't help it, in war you had to expect collateral damage, that's the way it was.
I went into the dining hall, which was full of people celebrating the victory and bowing as I walked past them.
I smiled and greeted the older councillors who were holding glasses of wine and seemed to be enjoying themselves.
"Alpha Lorys, how wonderful! You all have reason to celebrate today! Help yourselves to the red wine," said Magnus, handing me a glass of wine. Magnus was an old grey who only had his own interests at heart and sold them as those of the pack. The only reason that kept me from exiling him was that he had been a good friend of my father's, who had left me to ignore his stupid remarks and accept him, he had done a lot of good for our pack.
Now he was practically retired.
I gratefully accepted the glass and took a sip.
"I heard you tore the head off the Alpha of Blue Moon? Is that true?" Magnus asked me, looking at me with amusement.
I had to stifle a few words and gave him a friendly smile. "If you've heard it, you can assume it's true," I replied and took another sip of the red wine.
"If you don't want to hear it, you have to feel it, isn't that what they say?"
I looked at Magnus, who must have been outraged by my words. At least it was the most decent thing I could say. His presence alone annoyed me and I was already looking for Leonardo, who had disappeared into the crowd.
"If you'll excuse me," I was already running off in search of Leonardo. After the whole battle, I didn't feel like celebrating, but as Alpha, I at least had to be present and say hello to everyone.
My thoughts centred on the dark red diary and I wondered what it might contain.
I had found Leonardo surrounded by women and telling his heroic stories. He had probably had a lot to drink in a short space of time and seemed drunk.
"There he is, our hero! Alpha Lorys... May I introduce you to these lovely ladies? This is Elena and the lady next to me is Jeannette," he said, to which I just nodded and looked at him.
I had no interest in looking for a woman, because I hadn't given up hope of finding a mate yet, even though my clock was ticking.
Elena did indeed look lovely, wearing a red dress, the corset laced so tightly that her large breasts were revealed. "What an honour to meet you, Alpha!" she said, and they curtseyed slightly in greeting.
"The pleasure is all mine..." I replied. Joy...
Elena's dress reminded me of the diary again and I realised that my curiosity was greater than I had thought.
Red... The colour of love. It is associated with strength, warmth, passion and much more.
Elena was an open book, because it was clear what she wanted: a man for one night and if the evening went very well, she would have fun in bed with the alpha.
Would the alpha go along with it? I love women, no question about it, but I also love chasing them and convincing them of my merits. Elena was easy prey - nothing that turned me on.
