Blood Lust

Chapter Chapter Seven

On day when I had wished so badly for there to be a window that would let the sun shine through; I was stuck inside a prison instead. "Alright, the bunch of you will come with me." A Guard called out. A few of us had been ordered to mop the halls.

The Guard pulled us off to the side and led us through a hidden door in the very same hallway I had just mopped, the door blended in well with the white wall. Behind the door was a set of mazes. Some of the hallways looked as if they were still being built. Paint cans and other materials littered the floor, making it a hazard to walk through as we were led by only a few dim flashlights; desperately in need of new batteries. The Guard stopped at a newly installed see-through door, the sticker still plastered on the glass.

"In ya go." He opened it and held the door for everyone to walk through. In a single file, we walked into a office setting. It looked so normal as there were windows and exit signs. I felt like I could almost walk right out and onto freedom.

The first thing I had to do was look out the window. I thought I would see some gruesome scene, but instead I was greeted by white sandy beaches. The shore was lined with striped lounge chairs. It looked like a resort! I suddenly lost the urge to feel the sun on my skin as anger and confusion hit me.

"Fan out. We are setting up this office." The Guard had dumped a large box out on a table. Office supplies toppled over the desk and fell onto the floor. "Start stocking up the offices, trash bags in the bins, pens in cupholders. Make it look real." He began throwing things at each of us like it was a game. He threw and we caught.

I was thrown a package of pens. I chose the receptionists desk first, it was complete with a phone and calendar. I grabbed a garbage bag and put it in the bin on the floor. It was unreal at the lengths they were going through to make this look real.

I was in the middle of tying off the knot on the bin to secure the bag when the door to the office space flung open.

"Meetings aren't for another two days." The Guard said over his shoulder. His eyes glued to his phone.

An elderly man walked in. His face looked familiar, but I wasn't trying to pay attention too much. I just wanted to get the work done and leave. "Do you think I could borrow one of these to show me around?" The old man stepped in front of the Guard to capture his attention.

The Guard looked up from his phone, "Oh! Of course Sir!" He stammered, putting his phone away. He looked at each of us. It was a silent question, which one of us was willing to go with the old man?

Definitely not me.

I thought to myself. Thankfully, he had chosen someone else. "You. Go with him." The Guard had pointed to Mina.

She was the girl who had hogged the bathroom all morning, everyone had been irked and I decided to knock on the door. There was no answer, so logically I opened the door to see if there was even someone in there. Mina had been snorting something off the counter sink. She looked up at me with bulging bloodshot eyes. The next thing I remember was lying on the floor with blood on my face. She had punched me so hard in the face that she knocked me out.

From the glazed over look in her eyes; whatever she had taken was still coursing through her. It made me feel less terrible about not stopping the Guard from letting her go with the old man.

Once she had left the office with him, the Guard looked back at us. His face was pale, he was terrified. He was genuinely terrified and then I realized who that old man was.

"Stop working!" The Guard shouted frantically. "Just...Just drop everything." He fished his phone from his pocket and made a call, he locked himself in a separate office.

Each of us looked to the other for an answer. I would've said something, but the sounds coming from the hall had answered everyone's question.

The old man came back. His face had changed and I remembered the monster just as he was. Vile.

He stepped over Mina's body and walked into the light. It showcased the blood lathered all over his face. His ragged teeth were still showing.

"Yea...okay..." The Guard had finished up his phone call and opened the door, his eye immediately verted to the body that laid in the door frame. He cleared his throat, "Sir, we don't feed on them." He slipped the cellphone back in his pocket and rushed in front of the creature.

"Get me another and clean it up." The monster demanded. The Guard quickly looked down and mumbled something. We all watched in shock as the vampire casually walked out of the room.

The Guard looked back at us as we were still frozen in place by fear by what we had just witnessed. "We're leaving now!" He whispered. He ordered us to step over Mina's mauled body. When it came to my turn to step over her I had caught a glimpse of her lifeless stare, I choked.

What if that were me?

I contemplated. I looked back at her one more time, hoping she wasn't actually dead.

"Follow me, keep your flashlights off!" The Guard barked as he opened a loose panel on a unfinished wall in the hallway. He made sure we were all in before getting in and placing the panel back in place. We were in complete darkness until he switched on his light and flashed it on his face, "We are going to move quietly through these passages. No one talk!" He whispered. He took the light off his face and focused it on the passage ahead of us.
