Chapter BLS 1: {6} ~ PART 2
Wall?
The wooden door is somehow replaced with a solid, yellowish wall. It’s smooth and I don’t see the door or the doorknob anymore.
It’s then when I hear music. It sounds distant—but it also sounds familiar. I can feel it pulling me, drawing me in. I walk in the direction it’s coming from to find myself on a bright dance floor. It’s the exact replicate of the ballroom I was in with Raven.
What’s going on?
I see myself smiling in prince Nolan’s arms, dancing around in the ballroom.
Impossible.
She leaves with him and I follow, uncertain what to do next. I watch in dismay as he leads me out onto the balcony. The fence was painted golden. The dark, green vines wrap the building with flower buds that rest in the night, are closed off.
Nolan says something but I don’t catch it; instead, my eyes are glued to a particular flower, a sunset yellow one that blooms in the dark. I reach out, and its pedals almost unfurl under my touch. I’m sure I just imagined it.
I glance up to see prince Nolan and myself chatting in the dark, under the moonlight. I can see my cheeks flush, but he doesn’t notice. When I look back at the flower in my hand, it was gone. I frown before I see her, or me rather, making my way back into the ballroom.
To find Raven, I think. I find myself correct when she sits down next to Raven, chatting with two men I’ve never seen before in my life.
“Captain James...” I step closer to listen just as a woman passes through my body. I stare as she makes her way to the food table without even the slightest knowledge that something impossible just happened. I gawk, comparable to a pudding-headed fellow (idiot).
Unaware, I follow the woman to the table. I try to touch her shoulder, only for my hand to pass through it as if I’m a descendant of a ghost. My eyes widen in disbelief; I reach my hand out as a waiter passes by, only to have my hand passes through his arm as well.
Impossible...
While I’m there gawking at myself, I see that the other version of myself walking away in my peripheral vision. She walks across the dance floor, in a position I know far too well: head high and shoulders back, traveling with certain foreplay. I know that she, or me, needs some time to herself. She’s acting tough as if her life depends on it.
“As if? …Maybe not.”
I shake off the uneasiness and follow behind her footsteps. She is going in the direction that I was in earlier, the balcony. When I get there, it’s different from before. Instead of golden railings, now it somehow transforms into a rusty, brown color. The vines are nowhere to be seen, and the walls have cracks embedded in them. I feel the walls, the smooth edges are gone and the age is seeping through. But she does not seem to notice the difference. I look around, and I’m positive that this was the same balcony she, or I, came to earlier; the only difference was that Prince Nolan is not present.
At first, she seems to relax under the night sky; but then, she looks down toward something, and a worried expression follows. I follow her gaze to see the prince—he’s whispering. Even though he is speaking softly, his breaths ring out in the dead silence.
I can’t make out what he’s saying. He bent down onto the grass, touching something on the ground, something black and yellow. It meows and rubs its head against the prince’s leg, a cat. He laughs slightly. The sound is much louder than before. I rub my temple, hoping to wake myself up from this strange haze.
Out of nowhere, I see myself reaching my hand toward the ground like a crazy person, causing the old, rusty fence to creak loudly. We’re at least two floors high. If she’s lucky enough not to die, she’ll still get a broken bone or two.
I yell at her to stop her idiotic behavior.
The fence could not hold her weight, as it was too old. It wasn’t the sturdy fence as before, and now, it’s being forced to break.
But she kept leaning over, clearly drawn towards something unnatural. The barred balcony fence seems to get weaker every second. A loud pop sounds from the side, and I see a big screw pop out from her continued weight on it. The prince looks up, stares directly at me, or the other version of me, then he frowns and turns away.
What?!
“Hey!” I yell. But he doesn’t seem to be able to hear me. Another pop sounds, this time even louder, making me cringe. Nolan turns again. He looks around then looks up as another pop sounds.
“Hey! Hey you! Don’t...Stop!”
He rushes down below the balcony. The fence is bound to break any second now. Panic is now filling my mind, but my hand passes through her body every time I try to help. I stare at my hand in disbelief, not long before I try again—it doesn’t work. I yell at her to stop, but she can’t hear me. And I know she can’t.
What is going on?!
She continues to reach towards something far down below. I rush behind her to find what she is staring at, hoping to wake her up somehow. I only see the prince below and the cat he was petting. The cat licks its paws and looks up, looks unmistakably, directly at me, or rather her. Panicking, I try to grab her, but my hand passes through her body every single time.
“Useless...” a voice whispers. I turn around, but I don’t see anyone.
Focus Mila, you have to be able to do something.
“You can’t...just let her. The truth is hidden beneath the surface. Let her fall…”
Let her fall..? My mind repeats, almost drawn to the voice. I come back to my senses and violently shake my head.
No! Whatever were you just thinking Mila?! You have to save her.
“But you can’t...”
The old fence snaps with a deafening sound. I shriek as she tumbles over, clapping both hands over my mouth. I rush to the fence and look around frantically, careful not to fall over myself. All I see is Prince Nolan catching her as if she was a piece of a feather, and they both disappear into the grass—leaving the grass field nakedly empty.
I stare at the ground, and laugh to myself, rubbing my head in disbelief, taking a few steps backward.
It was like last time. You’re going to wake up. You have to, I reassure myself.
I cradle my head with both of my hands. I look down at the spot where she fell again, but I still don’t see anything. Only the droplets of water on the grass remain gleaming under the moonlight. I look up to see the cat staring at me. I peer around me, but there was no one here, not even a single movement.
Still and silent…just a little too much for it to be natural.
The cat was looking at me.
Abruptly, I get lifted off my feet. I spin around in who knows what like a crazy rollercoaster, and I finally land back on my bed, staring straight into the cat’s eyes. I yelp and scramble backward, almost falling off the bed a second time.
What on earth was I just thinking? A rollercoaster? What is that?!
And what just happened to me?!
The cat meows and walks towards me. I’m too afraid to move. He rubs his head on my cheek, causing me to inhale sharply. But somehow, a strong feeling sits in my chest, almost feels as if I’m at ease. It almost feels like something is pulling my heartstrings in the opposite direction, if not willingly, then forcefully. Even though I don’t know what just happened, I exhale and smile.
It’s a harmless cat. I hear me tell myself. Wait a minute…?!
I can almost feel the images disappearing slowly, gently erasing themselves from my mind.
“Forgetting...”
“Hello...” I whisper. It meows in response and purrs against my cheek. I’m still shaking from what happened, but I don’t feel fear anymore. Looking at the clock, it points directly at midnight.
“Well, let’s both get some sleep...Midnight.”
The cat purrs against my arm. I fall asleep before my head hits the pillow.
