Blinding Light (BLS Book 1)

Chapter BLS 1: {33}

Raven

I gasp as I’m sucked into the vision, Mila’s figure fading in the background. I try to reach her but she disappears.

The visions are never like this. I don’t ever lose my sense of reality.

I feel as if I’m floating, but then, I begin to fall. I can feel the wind blowing my long hair out of the way as I fall, hundreds of yards, meters down. I don’t scream. I know it isn’t real.

Just a vision.

I land on my feet without pain—just as I thought.

I look around. It’s so bleak here, so dark. It’s as if no life has ever set foot here. The trees are all rotten and black as if it’s been burnt. There are bones of animals everywhere and there’s not a single piece of grass in sight. Then I hear voices.

I hear her voice.

I rush over and I see Mila. Her hair is shorter, and she seems taller. She’s dressed in some kind of armor sort of clothing that seemed comfortable yet brings protection.

“I can’t ever forgive you for what you did.”

She speaks to a man, who seemed so familiar with his amber eyes. He nods. She’s also standing next to another man. His figure gives off a dark aura, and I involuntarily take a step further away.

She leans toward the man with amber eyes, “If things don’t go as planned, tell…”

I can’t make out what she says next as she whispered in his ear.

“I promise.”

“Thank you. For that, I promise to help you.”

A pained look crosses her face, “I think I’m beginning to understand why you did, what you did.”

He ruffles his hair and sighs, “I’m truly sorry.”

“You are not forgiven, but I’m willing to save your people, on one condition.”

“You are too kind. Anything,” he says.

“I stand by your choice,” the other man speaks, his voice lighter but full of emotion.

As she speaks, she smiles—a smile that warms my heart. Although I don’t hear her anymore, I know that she’s happy, truly happy. I feel a smile tug on the corners of my mouth on both hers and mine as she stands on her tip-toes to kiss the other man. I can only see his backside, but I could feel his happiness from a thousand miles away. I don’t feel myself slip away from the vision. Maybe this is the first step towards a brighter ending.

I’m back in the dark room, and I see Mila’s figure, who is still on the ground. She’s still shaking, and when she rises, her left eye is bright red. She stalks towards me and is in front of me in an instant. I gasp. She places a finger on my lips.

“Shhhh.”

I stand firm, not letting my fear slip through.

“You will get what you deserve.”

I frown when she removes her finger from my lip.

“I know I haven’t always been the best big sister. I know that I’ve left you alone in the two years of my absence. I tried to get back to you, I really did. Je suis désolé (I’m sorry).”

I inhale sharply, “You deserve so much more than I can offer. Forgive me.”

I place my hand on her face, but she only slaps it away.

“It doesn’t matter!” She screams.

holds her hand up, and my dagger comes flying into her hand. My eyes are stinging with tears as she holds it close to my throat.

“You are dead to me. You can’t say anything to earn forgiveness. You’ve taken my life! You took everything from me!”

“What in the heavens are you talking about?” I ask and give her a push, despite the fact that she has a weapon to my throat.

Is she absolutely insane? What’s wrong with her?

I breathe heavily and her face contorts into pain for just a second. My fear is only inclining at the sight of her—terrified of what stands before me.

How has it come to this?

Her troubled expression hurts me to the bottom of my soul. I know she’s been through hell and back these past weeks. But I didn’t…couldn’t understand.

“Mila. Listen to me. You’re not thinking straight. Who are you looking at right now?”

“I...” she looks at me, then shakes her head violently. “I don’t know.”

“I don’t know either. But we can figure it out together. Me and you, together. You don’t recognize me?”

She staggers back a few steps, her eyes lighting up a little.

Progress.

“Talk to me. I can help,” as I say that, I knew it was a grave mistake—her eyes are bloodshot again.

“Help? Like how you helped by lying to me? How you helped by murdering my mother?!”

She pushes me, and I stagger back before tripping over my long dress.

“I did not murder—”

She cuts me off, “No more talk.”

I slide back by the force of her push. I prop myself up onto my elbows. And before I had time to react, a sharp pain appears in my stomach, and I groan, looking into her cold, empty eyes. She looks straight at me when she pulls the dagger out, causing me to fall onto my back. I groan and hold my stomach, feeling the hot blood warm my fingers. My vision gets blurry as I feel my lifeless body skid across the floor. Something trickles down my chin.

Blood.

My head falls back, and my eyes find themselves staring up at the ceiling.

I remembered when Mila and I used to have so much fun together. We would laugh around the Calanques and swim in the lake, splashing each other, laughing. We would do the most dangerous tasks and climb high up and cliff dive into the water—such wild moments. I remembered the smile on her face when she first saw me. I remember when she still had that smile on her face when I teased her. I remember that vision as clear as day, as though it was yesterday.

I cough, and my hand is wet and sticky with my blood.

I remembered how happy she looked in that vision. I remembered how delighted she looked with that man. If she is sincerely full of joy, then I’m satisfied. I could feel myself fade away as my heartbeat slows.

I’ll see you soon, Mother. We can watch over her together. I’m thrilled for the future, for her.

Forgive me, Mila.

I won’t return this time.

We’ll meet again. You have to continue with your life—even if it’s without me.
