Blinding Light (BLS Book 1)

Chapter BLS 1: {22}

Mila

Present time...?

I sob in Raven’s arms. I don’t know what I did to have someone like her—someone head-strong and much braver than I could ever be.

***

We return to the campsite. Nolan rushes over when he sees me.

“Are you alright, Mademoiselle?” His amber, hazel eyes filled with worry makes my heart flutter and my stomach twist. I give him a small smile and nod slightly.

“Get towels for Mademoiselle Hayes and Mademoiselle Song,” he commands to the servants and they rush to get towels.

“I’m alright, Votre Altesse. Merci.” I nod at him as the servants wrap Raven and me in towels.

“I got her, make sure you also get some rest,” Nolan says to Raven.

No, I will make sure she’s alright,” Raven suddenly says, a disapproving tone in her voice.

“Well, you both need rest. I’ll escort her to her cabin then both of you can rest up instead of just one of you.”

“No thank you, Votre Altesse,” Raven says, a warning tone in her voice that signifies her decision is final.

“As you wish, then.”

Nolan leaves me alone with her. Before he could get far, I catch something that he says, his hand on his ear.

“Check the sister’s memory, wipe it.”

***

“Are you sure you’re alright?” Raven asks, her voice much gentler than earlier.

“I will be,” I smile at her. “What’s with the reaction with His Highness earlier?”

“Well, when you fainted the first time before you ran away like a crazy idiot,” she says and I roll my eyes, “His reaction wasn’t something that I had hoped for. It’s like there’s this gut feeling that tells me he’s not to be trusted.”

“Really?” I ask, sarcastic.

“You don’t believe me,” she says, scowling.

“There’s no proof, Raven. As much as I love you, I can’t seem to see this from your point of view,” I say, looking at her up and down.

“There is proof. When you fainted, he went to go get a doctor. But I know that he didn’t. He just ran around in a circle. When he came back, his face. I’m telling you, Mila. His face was so dark, and he seemed almost entertained,” she exclaims.

“Entertained?” I ask, frowning, “By what?”

“By your lifeless body!” She says, throwing her hands up.

I laugh, but by the look on her face, it was a grave mistake.

I clear my throat, “How is that even possible?”

“I’m telling you, Mila. Just promise me you’re to be careful with him. There’s something off about him that I can’t place. Heed my warning, sister. S’il vous plait.”

“D’accord (okay). I promise.”

Her shoulders slump in relief and I hug her closely. “I will be careful.”

“Good. Good.”

***

Waking up being uncomfortable, I shift on the bed in my cabin. I couldn’t move freely, and I could feel an arm wrapped tightly around my waist. Turning my head, I see Nolan’s face, inches away from mine.

I let out a shriek and push him as far away from me as I could, pushing myself the other way, almost falling off the bed.

“Woah!”

Nolan grabs my arm and catches me before my head hits the floor.

“You alright?”

“What are you doing here?!” I ask, looking up at him from the bed in an awkward position as he hauls me back up.

“Where’s Raven?”

“Don’t you remember? You asked me to be here. I escorted you back to your room.”

“You...you did?” I clearly remember Raven’s escorting me back to my room. Not Nolan.

“It was Raven,” I say, voicing my thoughts. “Raven escorted me here. How did you get in here? Where is she?”

“How sad,” he says, his voice changing completely. His amber eyes seemed to have glowed in the dark.

“You really don’t know?”

“W-what are you doing?” I scoot away from him, trying to free my legs from inside the tangled blankets.

“I’m showing you where she is.”

Just then, a small ember light upon his bare palm. I’m so scared that I don’t even find it in my gut to scream.

“How...?” I ask, finding fear and also amazement.

“You can do this too,” he says.

“W-what are you talking about?” I stutter, trying to back away from the fire that’s burning his hand, but not at the same time.

“You have an amazing gift, Mila. All I hope is that you can realize that sooner so we can all go back to living our normal lives. And you’ll get to be with Raven.”

He then reaches in his pocket to pull out a syringe—one with orange liquid inside. It looks so familiar, and a memory strikes me. I couldn’t see the face of the person but someone stabbed this into my side. But I knew that after I got stabbed, I woke up here—feeling hazed and disoriented.

“No,” I say, scrambling up. “No! Get that thing away from me!”

I crash to the floor and scramble up to my feet. I dash for the door and try to yank it open. But it seems to have been locked from the outside. Nolan sighs and flips his legs over the side of the bed and stalks toward me like a predator to its prey, his prey.

“Stop resisting. I’m warning you.”

Just then, the door opens and my eyes widen to see Raven. She stands there with a terrified look on her face. I scramble behind her like a scared child.

What am I doing?

I should be helping, not hiding.

But Nolan’s eyes are so intimidating as if he has been the center of my nightmares for years and I’m just realizing it now.

“What is that? What on Earth are you doing, Votre Altesse?” Raven asks, eyeing him. Nolan says nothing and brings his hand up to his ear.

“I need to do a slight memory wipe. Freeze the sister.”

Raven abruptly freezes in front of me.

“Rave?” I ask in a small voice.

She doesn’t respond nor does she move. Panicking, I turn on my heels and run towards the compound. I know deep in my gut that he’s not going to hurt Raven.

He’s trying to hurt me, I think as I run, as fast as my feet will carry me.

I should’ve listened to Raven.

I don’t know what that syringe will do, but I’m not willing to find out. But, a sharp pain consumes my lower back, causing me to fall face-first into the ground. I cry out as I reach around, grabbing the thing which I realize is the syringe. My head starts to spin, and everything wobbles around me. The world fades in and out of view with a whiteness then back to Miracle Island.

If this is a Miracle Island. Let this monster leave.
