Chapter BLS 1: {17}
Nolan
The door opens with a loud creak.
I blow a small ember on my palm. The orange fire dances on my hand.
I can feel the heat of it but it does not burn my skin. Even though through all this crisis, I still admire my transplant. I didn’t know that before modern technology, that something this amazing even existed. I didn’t know how others didn’t find out about it.
So fucking cool, I think to myself.
I drop the ember and hover it inches above the ground with my telepathic connection hold over it. I hover it also to make sure nothing would catch on fire. We don’t need that even in a fake, nonexistent, well, existent in the memory world. I only open the door by a crack so I could see where the ember was going. It dances around and I drag it back. One downside is that sometimes, it’s almost like it has a brain of its own. I have to take control unless I want to burn everything. It resists and I drag it back again, forcing it to go where I want it to.
I move it around, watching through it like binoculars. Asher’s mom Indra, our scientist, modified the ability so I could use this particular skill unique to me. At least my modification didn’t leave permanent scaring next to my eye like Asher.
I’m getting distracted again.
The ember’s flames are like a spyglass with the power of destruction. I hang around, looking under objects. But I can feel the aura fading, gradually.
Damn it!
I check every corner. But the aura is almost completely gone, almost as if it’s being washed away like the waves just beneath me.
Distracted for just a split second, I lose my hold on the ember and it falls to the floor.
Shit!
The wooden floorboard catches fire. I put out the ember immediately, but the small, orange flames remain. It gradually grows, lighting the bottom of the maroon curtains.
Crap!
I look around. There are no bathrooms around, meaning there’s no water.
Why are there no goddamn bathrooms?!
I sense another aura just before the fire suddenly extinguishes. I sigh in relief.
Turning around, as expected, I see Asher. Just one more thing to be jealous of him, with his Hydrokinesis.
“Why are you popping out of everywhere I’m at today?”
“Be glad that I decided to save your ass. Be careful with your Pyrokinesis idiot.”
“You’re right, thank you so much, savior. I owe you one,” I say mockingly. He rolls his eyes. Just then, I hear footsteps down the hallway.
Asher grabs my arm with a huge force and shoves me inside Mila’s room. He comes inside as well and clicks the door shut as quietly and quickly as he could.
“What the hell?”
In the dark, I could still see him as if it was daylight—one of the many benefits of my ability. He clamps a hand over my eyes as a second later, I hear shuffling in the bed.
What the hell is he going at?!
I push his hand away and frown at him, throwing my hands up in confusion. He points towards his own eyes and makes a cutting gesture with his hand. In realization, I deactivate my ability.
“Are you sure you didn’t mistakenly take the wind for a noise?” A voice asks outside the door.
“Non, I was sure I saw someone. I saw two people. Silhouettes.”
“Well, unless they were bull calves, I doubt you would’ve found anything. Come on, Sil, let’s go, there’s nothing here.”
The footsteps descend before I sense an aura again; it’s a lot weaker than the last one but I’m positive that it’s the same aura. I was about to dash out the door when Asher holds me back. I shake him off and open the door with a loud screech. I peek my head outside but I don’t see anyone anymore. I shove Asher and he trips, almost knocking a glass decoration on the floor.
“Damn it, Nolan. What—”
“You made me lost the aura!” I snap at him, keeping my voice low and quiet. “For all I know, you deserved that.”
“What aura?” He asks and stands—my eye level lands on his nose.
Curse him for being taller.
“Nothing anymore!” I throw my hands in the air. “Cause you made me lose it.”
He stares at me.
Damn it. I promised myself not to lose my cool again like this.
I sigh, cursing underneath my breath before pulling a hand through my already messy hair.
