Chapter BLS 1: {13}
Mila
A week later…?
Night before the party.
As I return to my room, my thoughts wander. I haven’t seen Midnight in a while. Maybe I was just paranoid. Dreaming of a cat that gives me visions. I was about to laugh when I realize how disturbing that is.
Maybe I am crazy after all, I think grimly.
I find Karen sulking in the corner of my room when I’ve returned. My happiness level jumps up at the sight of her. She tries to duck under the curtains, and I can only try to restrain my laughter.
“Karen, I can see you.”
She sighs loudly behind the curtain.
“Go on, tell me who it is—and the juicy details.”
She emerges, beet red. The corners of my lips tug themselves to my ears.
“You’re such a foozler (clumsy person)—don’t try to hide it.”
She exhales and saunters over, flopping down next to me on my bed. I was about to protest but she holds up a hand, her tired brown eyes tell me that there’s no point in complaining.
“It’s…Lord Kaine.”
I gasp in excitement, and Karen rolls her eyes.
“Remember that mistake I told you about?”
“Oui?”
“Well, it was him.”
“Monsieur Kaine? Twice?!” I flick her on the forehead. “You are very naughty these days.”
“Ow!” Karen rubs her forehead.
Although Karen is older than me and possibly my mother’s age, she’s still like a sister to me at times. Lord Kaine is the financial administrator and head minister of the state of Iwera—second hand to the king himself.
I have zero clue how Karen, my maid, managed...well, this.
“Lady Mila, one of these days, I’m going to teach you a lesson!”
She ravages in her dress, pulls out a fan, and whacks my head. I fall onto the bed and place a hand on my forehead before groaning and sticking my tongue out. Karen chortles, notably unladylike, so I look back at her. She lets out a breath, giving in.
“Fine!” She throws her hands up in defeat. “This is the only time you are going to get in my personal business. I have every right to say no, but you are impossible. So stubborn, just like my—” she cuts herself off.
I frown, “Just like who?”
She sighs and plays with the folds of her dress, “No one of purpose and that, I’m not willing to share.”
I pout as she rolls her eyes again.
“Besides, it’s not some pumpkin (a big deal),” she adds.
Something about the tone of her voice or her seemed to calm my mind. It ticks, rewinds, and the worry fades. The concern of my craziness, my performance at the next event, all fades except curiosity. It fades, then completely erases itself from my senses, wiping it away and replacing it with ease.
“But it is Karen,” I take her hands, “You’ve always been a rule follower, it’s nice to see difference for a change. I like it.”
Flushed, she takes her hands back. I raise an eyebrow.
“You know, it’s also good to hear someone share some gossip—” I brush my hair out of my face. “Some weird, no—rather strange things are happening to me, Karen. I feel as if I’m always hallucinating. I don’t know what’s wrong with me. I need a distraction, something juicy, preferably,” I wink at her.
“S’il vous plait (please)?” I pout, blinking my eyes, making the most prominent puppy eyes I can make.
Karen launches herself backward onto my bed, “Ah, you will kill me with this adorableness, my heart’s melting.”
She copies my gesture from earlier with one hand on her forehead and tongue sticking out. I stare, trying my best to imply that I’m upset.
“I will not be played by my own tricks!” I raise my head high, looking down upon her. She narrows her eyes, stands abruptly, and tackles me.
“Gah!” I yelp, trying to dodge her, but we both crash into the floor. She pounces herself off the ground onto me like a tiger on its prey. I scream, but soon that’s cut off with giggling. She tickles me energetically. I giggle, trying to push her off.
“…Huff, get off! …Ah…Hahaha…No…STOP!” I manage to push her off. But she comes back, like a moth to a flame, and tackles me again. I struggle, failing to hold myself together.
“No…Stop!! Ah! Hahaha…” I snort and burst into giggles.
“You must apologize to the amazing Karen Hayes! I took care of you; this is how you repay my debt?!”
I barely hear her, consumed by my own laughter.
“I…huff…do NOT!” I laugh and titter until she finally stops. Scoffing and turning away.
“So stubborn,” she mutters under her breath. I struggle to catch my breath as I pull myself onto my bed.
“Go to bed now, Mademoiselle. It’ll be a long day tomorrow evening. Must get lots of sleep beforehand.” I stare at her back, gasping, taking in gulps of air.
“You will tell…huff…me what happened with you and Monsieur Kaine—” I inhale sharply, a big as a breath my lungs will let me. I clutch my side and yell, “I will hear it!”
“Goodnight, Mademoiselle!” Karen leaves as she calls, smirking just before she pulls the doors closed.
