Chapter 1397 The Second Path
The next day, Josie went to Eccentric Corporation with the intention letter from Olsen Group to get Morgan's signature.
As soon as she entered the office, Ryan pushed the door open, holding a file folder.
"Dexter returned the stuff we gave to him."
Morgan slid his chair to the desk and opened the file folder. Inside were several papers, prominently featuring the evidence of the mayor's illegitimate child and some case evidence.
Josie was utterly surprised. "Why was it returned? Are you sure he received it?"
Ryan glanced at her, hesitating to speak.
"Speak," Morgan intervened.
"What he meant was, he didn't need your help. He would find another way out. He only had one condition for returning these."
"What is it?" Josie asked urgently.
Ryan pursed his lips. "Don't make things difficult for Josie."
She shivered. Dexter was astute; he must have known someone was helping her behind the scenes regarding the visit. In Wavery, Morgan was the only one who wasn't afraid to get involved in such matters. Every favor came with a price.
Even at this point, he was still doing his best to protect her.
Morgan clenched the papers, his expression darkening. "The investigative team will keep tightening the noose. He's been cornered for over a fortnight. Besides this, what other options does he have?"
Josie slumped in her chair, her mind reeling. Indeed, besides this, what other options did he have?
Ryan furrowed his brows. "Could he have found another backer?"
"His influence in Wavery centers around Charles, who hasn't dared to get involved so far. Who else could Dexter turn to?"
After all, the one issuing the challenge was the mayor. Who else could outrank him?
"If you could find evidence against the mayor, he might have done so as well," Josie suggested quickly.
Morgan didn't reply. He closed his
eyes
resio est. "Dexter isn't one to
himself to death. If this is his choice, it means he has another way out."
"I'll have someone keep a close eye on him."
OW
"It's useless. My guess is, he's at least two levels ahead of this." Morgan gestured with his fingers. But he still couldn't understand, In such tense circumstances, who would dare to wade into troubled waters?
Suddenly, his eyes snapped open, his gaze fixed on Josie like a cheetah stalking its prey. "Jo, do you know if he has any other backing?" he asked. Josie shuddered, suddenly feeling overwhelming pressure from Morgan. It was as if he had transformed into a completely different person.
She raised the unsigned contract. "If I knew, would I come to you for help?"
Morgan tapped a pen lightly on the table. "He truly treasures you."
Josie felt her nerves jolt as if he was striking her.
Morgan closed his eyes again, instructing Ryan, "Find out as soon as possible."
Josie returned to Olsen Residence, utterly drained.
Claudia was sitting in the yard, playing with Grape. "Back already? What unfortunate timing. Justin was here just now."
"Justin?" Josie was surprised; it had been a while since they'd seen each other. "Did he come to visit Pop?"
"He came in a hurry and didn't have time to see him, but he did meet with Ms. Marilyn."
Claudia showed no surprise. She had always known that Justin was working for Dexter.
Justin met with Ms. Marilyn? Josie frowned. "What did they talk about?"
Sensing Josie's tension, Claudia was startled. After a moment, she said,
"How would I know? Anyway, after
they finished talking, Marilyn went back to the Russell Mansion with him."
Recalling what Morgan had said, Josie couldn't help but feel anxious. Could Dexter really have found another way out?
But how did he do that?
