Chapter 1332 He Was Still Downstairs
Relationships of the past generation lasted a lifetime.
Josie wore a thoughtful expression, lost in contemplation.
Claudia glanced at her. "Have you made up with Dexter?"
Caught off guard by the sudden question, Josie paused for a while before saying, "What? No."
"No? It must be soon, right?"
Josie remained silent, uncertain of how to respond to the question because she herself didn't understand what was going on between them either.
"When your father was rushed into the ER today, some of the best doctors in Wavery came to assist halfway through the surgery. Later, Dexter arrived. He didn't ask anything and went straight to you. I knew then that he must have arranged it all," explained Claudia.
Josie clutched the hem of her clothes, mumbling to herself, "He sure gets news fast."
Claudia scoffed lightly. "Get up and take a look."
"What?"
"Look out the window."
This entire building was made up of VIP wards. It wasn't very tall. Josie looked out the window and was surprised to see Dexter's modified car parked downstairs. It stood out under the streetlight. The car window was half rolled down, revealing a glimpse of his profile. He was smoking, wearing a stoic expression.
Why is he still here?
"If you want to go, then go."
"I don't want to..." Josie furrowed her brows, yet she couldn't ignore her feelings. Standing up and making her way out, she said, "I'm just afraid he might drop dead if he doesn't get enough rest." Claudia smiled, seeing right through her daughter.
The autumn night was rather chilly. Josie quickly descended the stairs, slightly out of breath. Her heart was pounding unusually fast, though she wasn't sure if it was because of the running or something else. Her figure was particularly eye-catching in the night. When Dexter caught sight of her, she was jogging toward him. He immediately stubbed out his cigarette, opened the car door, and stepped out, "Jo, what's wrong?"
Struggling to catch her breath, Josie stopped in front of him. "Why... Why haven't you left yet?"
Four hours had already passed since the two of them had conversed in the stairwell. Dawn would soon break.
In the darkness of the night, the cries of autumn cicadas could be heard.
So she's here for me. Dexter felt a surge of joy in his heart, a smile tugging at the corner of his lips. "I stayed just in case anything happens and you need me."
"What are you talking about?" Josie's brow furrowed as she gave him a light smack. "Look at the time. Can your heart handle this?"
She turned to look at the driver's seat. "Where's Moses? Isn't he with you?"
Dexter seized her hand, forcing her to draw closer to him. "I didn't bring anyone with me. I drove here myself. They draw more attention than I do, and it wouldn't be easy to explain if they were spotted," he said.
Josie was at a loss for words.
She thought of something and said, "News of Mark's hospitalization might spread in the next few days. It's all my fault."
"Jo, now is not the time for self-blame."
He's right.
Josie shot him a glance, breaking free from his grip and slipped into the driver's seat, searching for something. "You can't stay up late. Where's your medicine? What should you be taking?" Dexter climbed into the car with her. "How did you there are medicines in the car?"
"They're deeply worried about your health. They must've left medicine in the car," Josie remarked as she kept searching. True to her words, she found it, but to her surprise, it wasn't just a few pills-it was an entire box brimming with medicine.
"Which one should you take?"
Dexter was amused by her excessive concern. "It's not that serious, Jo."
"Tell me!"
Left without a choice, he rummaged through the medicine box and took one out.
Josie found a bottle of water in the car and handed it to him.
Instead of swallowing the pill right away, he suddenly asked, "What about you?"
"What?"
"You say they're worried about my health. What about you? Are you worried?"
His gaze was intense.
Josie was caught off guard, and her cheeks flushed crimson. She instinctively turned her face away and impatiently forced him to swallow the pill, responding, "Isn't that obvious?"
