Chapter 28
The fluttering of wings.
Little steps scurrying through the trees.
My senses are heightened as my body flies through the trees with ease.
My hearing picks up Wes’ curses as he grunts.
“I’m coming,” I can only hope that Wes can hear me.
My arms swing gripping the trees and flinging me forward. They have a huge head start and I have a lot of catching up to do.
“Abigail,” Wes hisses out a breath, “stay out of this!”
“Are you insane? You’re outnumbered and outmuscled,” I growl my eyes zero in on him up ahead and then he vanishes.
Running faster I reach where he vanished and I see the edge before me. Taking in a small breath my body loosens up and I throw my body into the air, freefalling, I see Wes running below me and that is when I see Christopher.
He is running at full speed now free from anything that might hold him back. The wind whips around me as my feet hit the ground with a solid thump. With all my strength I push my legs up and run after him.
“Abigail,” without realizing I am next to Wes and he seems to be surprised that I was able to reach him.
“Chris is mine,” my fangs release a liquid in my mouth and I know that my killer’s senses are rising.
“I’ll take on his cohorts,” Wes pushes himself to keep up with my pace.
If Chris was not involved with this at the moment I would have Wes’ back but he took Hannah and held her hostage before me. He tried to hurt her and I will not stand back and let him try again.
Wes flings his body into the vampire before him and takes him down swiftly his hands wrapping around his neck with ease.
The cracking noise resonates in the air. My eyes are then locked on Chris. He is passing his men.
My fangs protrude and my body starts to feel weightless. The trees pass by me even faster I pass two of his men and they try to attack me but I am so much faster than them.
I will come back for you two!
Chris is almost at arm’s length. His body tightens when he senses my nearness and his head turns back a bit.
“Damn it,” my body lunges at him he senses it and throws himself to the side. My hand whips out and grabs the side of his head and with the utmost ease, I fling his body to the ground. Rolling to a stand I stare at him on the floor.
“You want me on your side? How am I suppose to be ruled by a vampire that can’t even look out for himself!” I hiss at him and he turns around ready to make a run for it, my leg pulls back and then it swings forward with so much force that the wind whistles by.
My foot connects with his side and he is thrown to the side, groaning in pain as he looks over at me.
“You need me!” He yells at me. His eyes reddening and I can feel my senses grow more alert than ever.
“Funny you’re not the first person to tell me that,” I lower down making eye contact with him.
The anger and pain in his face vanish and he stares at me as if he were completely mesmerized by my face.
“Why on earth would I need you?”
His has is impassive as he stares at me with absolutely no interest, “you think that I don’t have a boss to answer too? I might have wanted you for my selfish gain but there is someone else out in the world that knows you and what you are,” he laughs maniacally, “Oh sweetheart go ahead and kill me I have nothing left to lose. If you don’t he would certainly come after me.”
“What are you talking about?” Narrowing my eyes on him I try to look past the sudden craze haze in his eyes.
“Are you deaf? Kill me, Abigail! I rather die a fast death than go through what he has planned out. I’ve been running from him for 206 years and he spared my life fifteen years ago. He is not going to take what I had planned laying down,” he stands up before me and I step away from him.
I have never been face to face with someone that wanted to die. My demon side is even surprised as my fangs dwindle.
“Either kill me or I will go after that little girl you care so much,” my fangs protrude faster than they have ever before and my hands clasp around his neck.
There is no fear in his eyes he just stands before me a willing victim, “Take care and good luck with the rest of your life,” my hands tighten around his throat.
“Before you,” I stop and think of another word other than dying, “go can you tell me who this man is?” His eyes darken.
“We have a code of silence but what can they do when you’re dead.”
“Spit on your grave?”
He laughs humorlessly, “you think we get graves,” he shakes his head.
“I was being sarcastic,” I growl at him.
“His name is Gladios.”
“Sounds godly.”
“He makes himself seem so,” he takes a breath, “now enough of the chitchat and get this over with!”
“Kill him,” Wes is there standing next to me. His hands covered in blood along with his shoes and shirt.
There is an inner battle and my human side won’t allow me to do this. My humanity wants me to let him go and run back home to Mason and Hannah. My vampire side, the dark side, wants nothing more than to sink my teeth into his neck and suck out all his blood.
My mouth fills with my venom and I know what side has won this battle.
Pushing his head to the side my eyes zero in on his very visible vein and I sink running my nose along with it. My teeth puncture the skin with ease and his blood gushes out of him in waves and I take in all of his crimson liquid. Chris’s body falls limp in my arms as I suck the last of his life out of him.
Dropping him to the ground I step away from his body.
“What are we going to do with them?”
I seriously did not want to touch them anymore all I want to do is go home and wash away all the blood from my body. I might have thought that I was good at feeding but my shirt is covered in his blood as well as my hands. I feel so dirty.
“The hunters are making their way this way, they can handle this.” He grabs my hand and pulls me back into the trees as he runs into the city.
How is Mason going to react when he sees me? He knows what I am but seeing this might just be enough to scare him off.
“Abigail!” Wes shakes me and I have not realized that we have stopped moving.
“What?”
“What’s the matter?” His eyes fill with concern and I feel this sudden flood of sadness.
“I kissed Mason,” I drop my eyes.
I know that he wanted me to fall for him but that did not happen and now I am in love? Infatuated? Have a crush? On a man that I can mostly have no future with.
“I’m scared if he sees me like this that he might want to leave and,” I drop my head.
“Abigail,” Wes’ finger skims my chin and then he lifts my head so that I see his face, “if he leaves you because you saved him and his daughter then he’s an idiot. But he can’t stay away from the blood that he is going to see because you’re a vampire. A vampire that needs to feed to stay alive.”
“Thanks,” I give him a weak smile.
“Now go home I have some errands to do,” I want to question him but before I can he pulls me into a tight hug and presses his lips on my forehead.
Before I can say anything he is gone.
I run back home and when I reach my door I stop and stare at the doorknob contemplating whether I should walk in or run the other way.
Mason’s footsteps in the living room, “Abigail where are you?”
The worry in his voice makes my nonexistent heart constrict.
Pulling the door open Mason’s eyes dart to the door the worry in them quickly turns into something else as they widen.
