Bitten

Chapter 11

The girl’s blank stare is locked on me.

Lifeless.

Dead.

Her neck is open raw, blood slowly drips down her chest.

“Damn it, Abigail,” he snarls, “haven’t you heard of knocking.”

Wes bends down and picks the girl with ease. Her body is flung over his shoulder she makes no notion to run away.

“You —” the words are caught in my throat. My breath catches as a delicate sound makes its way to my ears. I can hear her soft heartbeat and shallow breathing so I know she is alive.

“Learn some manners.”

“I-I’m sorry, I didn’t expect you to be — ”

Killing? feasting?

I have no idea what to say after that so I let the silence engulf us. My human habits take over and I run my fingers through my hair and with my other hand take my glasses off.

“I was not excepting you to be here anytime soon,” Wes drops the girl on a twin size bed and turns to look at me.

The place is looking more like a home but it is a place that I wouldn’t want to live in.

“Yeah, neither did I but things change and I need your help.” My eyes stay on the girl that hasn’t made any movement.

“What change? The humans left your apartment for their sake?” He smiles at me and I know that that would make him happy to know that they are gone.

“No, not exactly,” I sigh, “they are staying to live with me,” the words come out rush and hush that I am hoping he did not hear them or understand.

“They’re what?” He hisses at me with darkened eyes, “Is he trying to sign their death certificates?”

My mouth fills with bile.

“Back off, they’re my friends I’m not going to hurt them,” his eyes narrow.

“You’re becoming territorial with them.”

“What? No, I’m not.”

“Go after her,” his head nods towards the girl on the bed.

“No,” I take a step back.

“Abigail, breathe,” he orders.

I take a deep breath trying to prove him wrong but the smell of blood; rust and salt, hit me harder than I thought it would. My fangs grow and I feel them on my bottom lip. I can’t control myself I am by the girl’s side in a flash lowering myself to her neck where the blood is oozing out of her slowly.

Opening my mouth wide my mouth waters when a sharp pain at my side sends me flying. Hitting the boxes as the objects within them jingle on the way down. My body barely touches the ground when I push myself up and hiss at Wes.

He is standing in front of the girl crouching ready to come at me, his eyes are crimson and burning into mine, his fangs biting over his bottom lip ready to bite down on whoever gets near him.

“You see how I change! I am claiming what’s mine, you do the same when you talk about those two. The only difference is that my eyes go the normal red when yours turn into the mesmerizing hue of violet.”

Not wanting to listen I let whatever is inside of me take over. I lunge at him catching him by surprise. He recovers quickly and moves out of my way before I can take him down. Stopping myself before I crash into a wall I turn to look at him, his mouth set in a stern frown as my lips curling around my teeth I feel like a wild animal that’s going to survival mode, “move aside.”

“She’s all yours,” Wes walks out of the building leaving me alone with the girl the disappointment, anger, or confusion in his eyes making rethink what I am doing.

He is trying to help me, he’s been patient, understanding, and helpful and all I’ve done is be a bitch to him. He was there when I had no idea how to save Mason and Hannah. He saved me when I tried killing myself. He is always there and I just keep pushing him away.

Shaking my head I turn away from the girl, that could have easily been me. Sighing, I might not want to admit it out loud but he saved me more than he knows. Sure, he made me into the bloodthirsty being but he also made me into this strong and capable person.

I follow Wes outside but before I step outside I hear muffled noises.

“Wes?”

“Who do we have here?”

An unknown male voice fills my ears as I walk out of the building.

Blonde and muscular in his early twenties in human years but I can tell he is not human by the fangs that appear before me. He takes a deep breath and closes his eyes, my eyes follow his outstretched hand as Wes is being pressed against the wall by his throat. He doesn’t move but his eyes glare at him.

“Well my brother it seems you found the elusive C negative blood donor,” he opens his red eyes and smiles at me. “Lucky for you I am not so hungry at the moment, but I would love a taste,” he flings Wes to the side as if he was ragdoll and strides towards me. He smiles believing he has me under his charm, his appearance would have probably had me drooling back when I was human but as of this moment, I just want him out of my sight.

“Back off,” standing my ground even though I have no idea what to do when a vampire is trying to come after you, there’s no handbook.

“Or what?” He hisses. My instincts kick in and my fangs appear once again, “That’s a beautiful color you have, too bad it’s not going to be seen for too long after this.”

His hands get a hold of my head and he pushes it back exposing my neck, he runs his nose along my neck.

“You smell so appetizing and your body is full of blood you must have turned a couple of days ago.”

Without thinking I plant my hands on his chest and give him a shove sending him flying, but much to my dismay he is back in my face angry ready to rip my head off my shoulders.

“I said back off,” my body and mind are in sync, my fist is flying towards his face but I see his hand going up to stop it so I prepare myself.

The deafening boom of his hand and my fist connecting would have scared me but at the moment I am too focused on what I want to do to him. He grips my arm tightly giving me leverage and I put all my weight on his hands and swing my leg high as the top half of my body goes down kicking him on the cheek and ear. The sound sounds like thunder, he releases me and I stand up quickly but not quick enough. He throws his body at me and we go tumbling down.

“How dare you?”

His whole body is pinning me to the ground his fingers digging into my hoodie as he is trying to get to my skin. He raises his fist above me and I shut my eyes ready for his punch.

One second his whole weight is on top of me and the next I can breathe again and he is off of me. I open my eyes and see Wes holding him up by his throat, his expression is torn between killing him and not. His fangs slowly retreat and his bloody eyes start to darken to brown.

“Vince get out of here before I have to do something I will regret,” he drops him and Vince lands on his feet, looking at Wes with no emotion.

“I will see you later my brother, but know this she will be your downfall if not by her blood but by the feelings you hold for her.”

Vince turns to look at me and I hiss at him, I know that Wes wants more from me but I can’t force myself to feel something that I don’t, “you are a good fighter but you need more practice if you want to live a long life as a vampire, I could have killed you if he wasn’t here.”

I stare at him not wanting to blink thinking that he will turn and attack me.

“Just go!” Wes says his thumb and index finger pressing the bridge of his nose, he looks tired if that’s even possible. I walk towards Wes my eyes not daring to flinch away from Vince, but Vince is gone in a flash no trace of him left behind.

“Who is he?” My body relaxes now that he is gone and I look at Wes as he nods back to the building we just came out of. We walk inside in silence and he closes the door behind me.

“He was my friend before we were turned,” he sighs and presses his back at the wall next to the door.

He looks drain and lets his body slide down. He pushes his legs close to his body and rests his forearms on his knees as his head hangs low.

“We were turned by the same vampire, a female. Anyways we thought that being a vampire was the best thing that could have happened to us speed, strength, and being eternal but I would trade it all to relieve this thirst the thirst for life, blood. Vince and I are still considered new to the vampire world but our creator is well known and had many enemies, that is why we stay hidden or on the move. Our creator was killed in front of us she is only allowed to turn one vampire at a time until it is not considered a newborn. They came after us next, but we were long gone. I decided to stay here, Vince is still on the run.”

“Who are they?”

“Vampires are very territorial as you already know. Vampires build their coven and do not appreciate it when another vampire walks in and tries building their own in an already established coven. She was doing just that and the leader didn’t like it so he sends his men after us, they got her and burned her.”

“What if those people find you? What then?”

He chuckles, “Then I die, I guess or become their eternal slave. Death sounds so much better, don’t you think?”

“I guess if that’s what you want but you’re just going to give up like that without a fight?”

“Fight! Fight for what?”

“You changed me and now you’re calling it quits. How brave of you?”

My anger becoming more evident towards the end.

“I changed you thinking that you would stick by my side giving me a reason to keep on going but you found something to keep you going and it isn’t me.”

He sighs and looks over at the girl on the bed still bleeding on his comforter he shakes his head and looks up at me.

“Why did you come here?” I know he wants me to say that I chose him but I couldn’t give it to him, he just has to accept that.

“I came here seeking your help but I guess I’m on my own now,” I walk to the door and slide it open.

The sun is beaming I have no idea where my glasses are and I don’t care since my shadow covers me from the sunlight. I walk at a normal pace back to my apartment, climbing the stairs slowly. Making my way to my door.

To a new life and new existence.
