Chapter 14 Acquiescence
Layla paused and slowly clenched her fingers at her sides into
fists.
She turned around. Wesley was playing with her pen holder with a calm expression as if the threat of the moment had not come from his lips.
After a while, he looked up at Layla. As usual, he said in a soft but firm tone, “Come here.”
Layla looked into his calm and deep eyes. After three seconds, she clenched her fists, slowly loosened them, and walked toward
him.
“Close the door.”
Layla had no choice but to follow suit.
She shuffled her steps and came to Wesley with her head down, hiding her expression.
Wesley stood up slowly. The next moment, he grabbed her by the neck and pushed her onto the desk.
Layla’s waist hit the edge of the desk, and there was a sharp pain from the injury.
“Why didn’t you answer the phone?”
Layla held back her tears and whispered, “It’s powered off.”
Layla lowered her eyes and did not answer. Her silence was the acquiescence.
His hand, pinching her neck, suddenly moved down slowly. Layla immediately hugged his hand. With a face full of panic, she begged, “No, don’t do it here.”
“Are you afraid?”
Layla’s eyelashes trembled slightly. Tears welled up in her eyes. “They will be back soon.”
Wesley didn’t care about it. He put his hand on Layla’s waist and pinched it hard. She clenched her teeth hard to prevent herself from screaming.
He leaned close to Layla’s ear, whispering like a lover, “I said before I had the final say about ending our relationship. If it happens again…”
He didn’t finish his words, but Layla could sense his threat.
Outside came the conversation of her colleagues.
Layla’s eyes widened all of a sudden. She stared at Wesley in horror, but he just glanced outside the door.
Hearing the sound of the doorknob turning, Layla, fueled by an unknown strength, pushed Wesley away and quickly ducked under the desk.
“Hey, Mr. Harrington, are you here to find Ms. Brooks again?”
Wesley looked as calm as usual, put his hands into his trouser pockets, and left Layla’s desk. “Yes, where is she?”
“I don’t know. I heard that she had to go back, but…” Her eyes fell on Layla’s seat, and she smiled, “Ms. Brooks‘ desk is the one in the back.”
Wesley glanced over. “Really? I’m mistaken.”
“Mr. Harrington, you and Ms. Brooks are so affectionate. You come to see her every day. By the way, when are you going to get married?”
Wesley smiled and walked out of the office without answering her question.
“He’s so handsome. When will I find a boyfriend as perfect as
Mr. Harrington?”
“Stop dreaming.”
Layla squatted under the desk. As she heard the discussions of her colleagues, the phone in her hand vibrated suddenly.
The screen lit up, and two words popped up on it: [Ten o’clock.]
Layla closed her eyes weakly and buried her head in her knees. A deep sense of powerlessness enveloped her, leaving her with
no escape.
She tried her best to avoid him and prayed to God that time would pass as slowly as possible.
But God failed her after all.
Chapter 14
The craniotomy at three o’clock in the afternoon went very
smoothly. The operation that was supposed to take eight hours ended within only six hours.
After it was over, Ivan praised Layla. Seeing that she was not proud, he was more satisfied with her in his heart.
After explaining a few more words, he asked Layla to get off work and go home early to rest.
Layla said yes, but after returning to the department, she sat in her seat and did not move for a long time.
Holding the phone, she loosened and tightened it repeatedly.
