Chapter 110 –
Cara's
POV
My heart broke for Rex. How humiliating for him to have this type of secret exposed in front of his friends and peers. Clearly, Mom knew about it, and I glanced at Anton. He must have seen it and told her. I knew Mom was trying to push Lisa. It was obvious that Emily had been horrible to her when Mom lived here. I guess it is like mother, like daughter around here. I knew Mom wanted to get back at Emily for what she had done to her, but this was too far. His family always held him at arm's length. I can't see it getting any better for him anytime soon. Devin looked stunned by the news, but Rex looked utterly devastated.
I wanted to comfort him, but I knew Alexei would be upset if I did that. He just got me back and is still upset over their actions25. I could tell that the news shocked everyone there with us. Murmurs ran through the crowd as they all started discussing what they had just heard. That explained a lot, though. Why Lisa was their pride and joy, and why Rex wasn't. Devin might not have fully realized that Rex wasn't his, but his distance from him showed that his wolf knew it wasn't his pup.
My mother had a plan in mind, but I hated how Rex had just been blindsided, and I was someone who also had experience being an outcast. Me more so than Rex, but it was hard not to comiserate with him on how this played out. My mother is not a bad person. She is going somewhere with this, admittedly slowly, but she has a plan in mind. I just don't know where she is going just yet. So, I will not speak to her about this until after we are gone. Unless she can make this round of questioning make sense.
"You bitch!" Emily screamed out and ran at my mother. She was pissed that she couldn't land a punch, and we could all tell that she was about to phase into her wolf again.
"Emily, if you phase, you won't get to speak or share your side. You won't be able to defend yourself at all. If you think I went too far, then correct me. If Rex's parentage was such a secret, how did Lisa know? Even his father didn't know, but I know why you didn't tell Devin. But I don't know why you always treated Rex like an outcast. He did nothing wrong. You did. It would help if you had told Devin from the start. You should have given him the opportunity to decide if he wanted to raise another wolf's pup. I know why you didn't. You thought that you would lose Devin if you did. But why would you tell Lisa? She has done nothing but be the worst sister to him?" my mother asked Emily.
"This is no one's business but mine and Devin's. Why do you even care, Saoirse? We will deal with this as a family. I'm not going to air out any issues we might have with you," Emily screeched out. She was excellent at avoiding the questions on everybody's mind. Lisa was looking like she had sucked on a lemon but was afraid to open her mouth now.
"We have all seen it, Gamma Emily. How badly you treated Rex over Lisa. I always wondered why. I guess we all know now. Rex might have made a mistake but did it because he was under Alpha command. He helped to kidnap us because he loved my sister, and he has for a while now. I felt so bad for him growing up with Lisa, as the favoritism you both showed was evident to the whole pack. You act like he is the bad child when the one at your feet is much worse than him, but hearing the reason behind it is terrible. Rex is still your son, yet you don't support or love him. Let me guess, is it because he is a daily reminder of when you messed up?" I asked.
I wasn't trying to embarrass Rex but to point out that what he did pales compared to what they had done. He had been Alpha commanded to do what he did to our parents. He couldn't have said no, even if he had wanted to, not without being banished from the pack. I know in his heart he knew what he was doing was wrong. Yet he still tried to protect and stand up for his friend Paxton.
Dad and Ellen did the absolute bare minimum for me. So, my feelings for them are not as strong as Brenna and Luna's were. I had a roof over my head and food in my stomach. I also had my father letting me know what a disappointment I was to him every day for the last five years. I had hand-me-down clothes and knew my place in the family was the least important. They would have gotten rid of me if they could have. I would have probably run away years ago if not for my sisters. They were not kind to me, and I hold no illusions that they loved me. But at the end of the day, he was still my father, and I had loved him. No matter how cold he was to me or how he treated me. It hurt to lose them. Hearing Paxton admit that he did what he did because he was scared of Dad beating him in a fight for Alpha was eye-opening. He had surprised me admitting that Dad had been willing to do that for me. My chest hurt just thinking that if Dad had left it alone, he would still be alive today. Paxton deserved the bulk of the punishment, but they are leaving it for the Council to decide what it will be. I am sure Mom is filling the time while they wait for the Council to arrive here to make a ruling.
I am interested to see what Anton and Mom are going with this. Lisa already admitted that she would be sabotaging the pack. I also acknowledge that Luna and Brenna may have a different opinion of what the final punishment for them looks like. I am delighted that Anton is here. We don't have to wade through the lies and deception that Lisa and her mother would try to give us. Anton already knew everything, and Mom was making sure that the pack knew what had happened here, too.
They had all doted on Paxton. He could do no wrong. Lisa was a lot less popular but was the head mean girl in the pack. The title fit her well, except she wasn't the brightest girl in the pack. She-wolves talk, and rumors spread about how she treated others. Most of the she-wolves were happy when she stayed focused on me. Some of her incidents were swept under the rug. I already knew that her mother was the one to do it. It was well known that she had covered up most of what Lisa did to me. I think she will have a hard time with the pack after today. The fact that they now know what she was planning to do to all of them will probably make her the most hated person in the pack. I am actually totally OK with that.
"Yes, it was my mate's pup, but he was an Omega. He was not worthy to be with me, but I didn't find out his rank until after the fact. I rejected him and he eventually accepted it. He refused to at first, but the betrayal pains hurt much worse than he thought they would. He left the pack shortly after that. But who cares? It is over and done with, and ancient history now. It happened almost twenty-five years ago. Devin is his father. He raised him his whole life. Why are you so focused on tearing our family apart? Didn't you get enough here before James came to his senses and kicked you out of the pack? You are a filthy witch, and you are trespassing. Get out! Get out of here right now, Saoirse," Emily got more upset as she spoke. She was roaring in anger by the time she got to the end of it.
"My wolf always told me that I was a fool. I ignored him every time he told me that Rex wasn't mine. How could you lie to me like that, Emily? I asked you outright if Rex was mine, and you assured me he was. How could you pretend that I got you pregnant when you knew it was all a lie? Rex is my child, as far as I am concerned. It is you and Lisa that I don't want to claim or have any more interaction with. How did I not notice how spoiled and entitled Lisa is? You have always downplayed her actions. Twisting things around to make it seem like Lisa had to defend herself against what Cara had done these last few years. Cara didn't go looking for trouble with Lisa, it is obvious that it was the other way around," Devin spoke out aggrieved.
"Lisa has always been like that, Dad," Rex stated, then frowned. "What am I supposed to call you now?"
"You still keep calling me Dad. I am your father in everything that matters. I will see about finding your biological father if you want to meet him. Emily, I want you and Lisa packed up and out of my apartment by this afternoon. I am not willing to live with either of you anymore. Over the years, I have noticed that you are not the woman you portrayed yourself as. Emily, before you move out, I need you to accept my rejection. I refuse to be bound to you after knowing how little you think of me," Devin announced.
"You can't do that to me, Devin. We are a family. I gave up my mate to be with you, Devin," Emily ran over and grabbed his arm to keep him from walking away.
"You gave your mate up because you felt he was not worthy of you. He dodged a bullet in that, but it ended up hitting me. You wormed your way into my life, but you never loved me. Our relationship was all a lie. I had noticed lately that things were extremely one-sided. I was always the one giving in to you. We always do what you want, or you pout for weeks about it. I had been so busy with work and the pack while I was Gamma that I allowed my relationship with Rex to break down. He might not be my biological son, but he is mine. In every way that it matters, he is mine," Devin stated, pulling Emily's arms off his.
"I can't believe you will let such a small matter come between us, Devin. I love you. That is why I wanted to be your mate. Please, don't let this bitch tear us apart. She doesn't even belong here, and she is causing a great deal of trouble. Are you going to let her win by breaking us apart? Why are you going to hold the one time my foot slipped against me? I said that I am sorry. You can't believe how sorry I am, but we can get past this," Emily pleaded with him.
"I'm not letting her tear us apart, Emily. You did that all on your own," Devin replied.
