Betrayal At the Altar by Dolores Delia

Chapter 854

Chapter 854
The following day, Rachel Grey had breakfast after washing up and left for work.
However, she did not expect an uninvited guest to be waiting for her at the office entrance.
Rachel saw Louis Smith loitering in front of the office before she got out of her car.
She had not seen Louis since the bidding ended.
She thought Louis would be up to his eyeballs with the Smith family matters at hand. He would not be in the mood or have the
time to wait for her here.
Rachel was spot on with her assumption.
The Smith family was now in a dire situation. Old Mr. Smith was still in a coma in the hospital, and everyone in the family lived in
fear all day. They seemed harmonious on the surface but harbored ulterior motives against each other. They all wanted to take
advantage of the elderly man on his deathbed to get more inheritance for themselves.
Louis would shuttle between work and the hospital tirelessly daily.
The crazy schedule finally took a beating on him, he was no longer as high-spirited and handsome as before.
However, Louis put himself together in a presentable manner before seeing Rachel.
It was human nature to reminisce, feeling heartbroken and repentant when one had lost and missed the past; Louis was no
exception
He thought that Rachel was obsessed with marrying him back then because she eyed the Smith family’s fortune to help
transform herself into a socialite in the upper-class circle.
However. Louis regretted when he learned that Rachel was, in fact, the heiress of the wealthiest family in Seaxas, the Johnson
family. He realized how silly he behaved toward her previously. But it was already too late.
Being the heiress of the wealthiest family in Seaxas, Rachel never had to worry about anything in life since she was young. Why
would she take fancy to the Smith family and its social status

Louis recalled her every word when they broke up. “Louis Smith, I didn’t cover anything other than you when we were together,
and I don’t care about the Smith family’s wealth and glory. I also don’t care about becoming Mrs. Smith to be the envy in your
social circle.”
He scoffed at her back then, thinking that Rachel was just being stubborn and naive.
He realized now that she meant what she said and looked down on him.
Why was Rachel so dedicated to the Smith family in the past?
Louis was aware of his good looks but knew he was not the most outstanding one in his circle. Moreover, the Smith family’s
status was below the Johnson family, Seaxas’s wealthiest.
Why did Rachel agree to marry him back then if that was the case?
Louis could not figure it out after much pondering. He decided the only way to find out was to have a heart-to-heart chat with
Rachel Grey.
He was mentally prepared that he might miss her today and did not expect much. Therefore, he was elated that Rachel showed
up.
Louis walked up to her, hoping to see a hint of emotion on her face. However, Chanel remained indifferent, as if nothing had
happened between them. They were just strangers to each other.
Louis felt a twitching pain in his heart when he realized the reality was not like what it was before.
He took a deep breath and said in a hoarse voice, “Rac-Rae, can you give me a chance for us to talk in private?”
The corners of Rachel’s lips curled into a mocking smile. “Why should I give you a chance, huh? When we broke already made it
clear that we would never reconcile. Have you forgotten, Mr. Smith?”
I had
Louis was not surprised, he had anticipated the outcome.
Rachel was a woman who dared to love and hate. She would not be Rachel Grey if she forgave him so easily.

Louis pondered for a moment and said, “I’m sorry, Rachel. I apologize for what I did previously. I didn’t cherish you in the past
and trampled on your love for me. I’m so, so sorry.”
Rachel chuckled. “There’s nothing to be sorry about, Louis. It was just a coincidence of freaky circumstances. Now that we know
the truth, we no longer need to hold grudges against each other.”
“A coincidence of freaky circumstances?” Louis was confused.
Clearly, he did not understand what Rachel meant.
Rachel initially thought Louis saved her in Phareborough on that fateful night. Therefore, she stepped forward and rescued. the
Smith family when she learned of its dire situation.
It was her gesture to repay Louis’s kindness, but Louis mistakenly took her gratitude as having feelings for him.
To keep her by his side. Louis later proposed marriage.
Rachel had spent every waking moment with Louis Smith back then and developed genuine feelings for him. Therefore, she
accepted his proposal because their relationship was harmonious. She thought marriage would be a good experience for both.
However. Louis eventually abandoned her at the altar for Olivia Cruise. Rachel was heartbroken until she met David Jones and
gradually understood what it was like to love someone and be loved in return.
Rachel realized what she shared with David was unlike the vanilla variety of comfortable feelings she had with Louis.
When Rachel finally found out that David Jones was the one who saved her, she lamented that the heavens had played a joke
on her.
Therefore, saying it was a coincidence of freaky circumstances was not an exaggeration.
However, Rachel had no intention of telling Louis the whole story.
It was not because she did not wish to hurt him or for any other reason. She felt she did not need to waste her time on a
stranger.
Rachel looked at Louis coldly. “Let bygones be bygones, shall we? There’s no point reminiscing about the past”

Then she walked away without looking at him.
Rachel’s intention was straightforward. She did not want to forgive Louis or hold a grudge against him. What happened. between
them was in the past. They would have nothing to do with each other going forward.
However, her indifference made Louis feel like a blunt knife had stabbed him repeatedly and left him for dead. The pain was
excruciating and almost suffocated him.
Louis would rather Rachel hate him to the core and even fight him to the death. In this way, they would continue to be entangled
in the future, and he would still have her in his life.
Rachel’s cold and indifferent stare hurt Louis. “No, we can’t just end it like this,” he moaned.
Then he reached out to grab her subconsciously.
Rachel seemed to have anticipated his move. She turned away to dodge his advance.
Looking at Lous coldly, she said, “Didn’t I make myself clear enough just now?”
“No, Rae-Rac, we can’t just end it this way. I know I’ve let you down in the past. You can punish me all you want, even take
revenge on me. I will accept gladly to repent.”
However, he could not accept Rachel’s decision to let go of the matter.
Rachel smiled mockingly at his plea. “What is this? An atonement? Don’t you think it’s ridiculous, Louis? When l’asked you to
stay, you left me at the altar without looking back. Now that I have decided not to pursue the past, you suddenly want to be
punished for your deeds.”
“You said you loved Olivia Cruise so much that you couldn’t forget about her throughout our three-year relationship. What
happened now? Did you finally forget about her? Louis, did you love her that much after all?”
Louis’s eyelids fickled; He was speechless for a while.
Rachel sneered and said blatantly. “In reality, you don’t love anyone, You only love yourself. Now that you’ve finally come to your
senses, you only want to satisfy your ego, whether guilt or redress.”
Louis scoffed at her in the past, but now he was heartbroken, realizing he had missed the opportunity to benefit from the
Johnson family from the marriage.
