Beneath the surface: Forbidden love

Chapter 22

Kael

''We're getting closer, its just a little further Alpha.'' Remi links. He is one of my best trackers. From the route we were taking, we were heading down the mountain towards the village. We had all shifted into our wolves. There were about ten of my strongest wolves following behind me.

Earlier today one of my warriors found another letter, only this time the letter was in English.

It was the first one in days. It was fortunate that there were no bodies near by- at least I hoped. But luck was not on my side these days.

''She should've listened. She should've stayed away.'' It read.

I knew instantly who the letter was directed at. Marisela. But stayed away from what? I didn't understand. My father almost killed the innocent service boy who had delivered the letter. He's still stressed over my mother-we all are, but she's doing a lot better now.

Then, during training today, we heard a scream in the distance. I immediately shifted into my wolf form and my men followed. Remi being the best tracker that he is, was in front with me leading the way. He and I picked up on a very strong scent a mile back.

It was blood.

''Do you think it has anything to do with the letter?' Victor links. He's light brown fur in line with my black one. I gave a slight nod of my head confirming it and pushed my wolf further running ahead of my pack.

Dimitri's dark brown wolf ran up beside me a few minutes after. His frame was almost as big as mine.

''Kael,'' he speaks through the link. He nudges me, and I slow down my pace allowing the rest of the pack to run ahead of me, ''I have to ask you something important.'' I nod my head for him to continue.

''Have you and Marisela begun the mating process.'' I let out a growl in irritation, it was none of his business.

''Relax man," he links. "I have my reasons for asking." I wait for him to continue. When he doesn't, I nudge him a little harder causing him to lose his balance.

"Okay, okay," he gets back on his feet.

'"I've been noticing her heat up quite often. The other day, she almost feinted, she was burning up man." I stop running at his words. Dimitri slows down and walks up to me. "I know something's up between you two, and I won't ask what, but I hope you are aware there's a full moon tonight." Once those words were linked in my mind, I freeze.

''Everything alright Alpha?'' One of my pack members link.

''Everything is fine, you all go ahead and follow Remi.'' I link to everyone. Remi's wolf lowers he's head in respect towards me and then takes off running, the other wolves follow. Everyone except Dimitri, he stays behind.

''There's a full moon tonight, Kael.'' Dimitri says again and I listen carefully, knowing what he was going to say next, ''And you know what that means, that is if you started the process.'' My wolf lets out a slight whimper, lowering my head to the ground.

The first step in completing the mating process is a kiss. The second step being the mark. And finally the actual mating.

How could I forget!

Not soon after, we hear the pack howling not too far away from Dimitri and I. Our wolves both look at each other on alert, sensing something is wrong. Immediately we take off running in the direction of the others.

We stop in a clearing just outside the village surrounded by tall mahogany trees. The wolves all start to stand on either side of me. I slowly start to trek towards the smell, it was coming from behind a large tree. The closer I got, the stronger the smell.

I suddenly stop when I see where the blood is coming from. My wolf growls out in anger.

The bloodshed was as barbaric as it was as evil and cruel.

A child. An innocent soul. Taken away in such a gruesome manner.

Her body is face down in the dirt. Her back ripped open. There were three large scratch marks on her bare back. My wolf whimpers at the scene. Her long hair is drenched in blood, you could no longer see the natural colour of her hair. I howl out in anger and grief, my wolves follow suit.

I start to sniff around the scene, hoping to find anything, another scent perhaps. But I don't.

''Close off all access to the ocean, no one should step foot near the beaches.'' I instruct.

The Sirens were dangerous. I knew damn well this was their doing. But a child? an innocent. Sirens were dirty, and beyond evil.

Wolves aren't any good either, but we only attack in battle. And there, we show no mercy.

But this? This was sinful.

Immoral.

Dimitri stood beside me taking in the scene. I hear his wolf whimper.

He looks over at me, his eyes glowing a bright blue. He is angry. I let out a low growl, warning him.

''Calm down Dimitri, she will get justice for this.'' I tell him through the mind link. He lowers his head and takes a step back. With one last look at me, he turns to the other wolves telling them to head back. However Victor's light-brown wolf, stays behind with us.

When the other wolves are gone, Victor, Dimitri and myself shift back into our human forms. One of the guards back at the palace mind-links me.

''Alpha,'' his voice rings in my head, ''the Luna's parents have arrived.''

"Tell the princess I'm on my way." I instruct before closing the link.

The three of us stand naked next to each other. It wasn't anything out of the norm. As wolves, nudity doesn't affect us at all.

"Alpha, what is it?'' Victor asks. I look back at the scene and to Victor. Instead of speaking, I nod towards the dead body. Victor slowly takes a step forward. His body freezes when he sees the state of the body. He's eyes glow a bright blue, and his jaw tenses. I let out a low growl, calming his wolf.

''Whoever did this will fucking pay!'' he sneers, anger and rage sipping off every word. Dimitri and I growl in agreement.

''I need to head back,'' I tell them, ''Marisela's parents have arrived.'' They both nod in understanding. Before leaving, I walk over to the deceased body and bow my head. A sign of respect to a lost member of my pack.

I turn to them, ''do not say a word to the princess about this.''

''But Kael-''

'' Not a word.'' I say with finality. They both look at each other then back to me lowering their heads in submission. I turn to leave Dimitri and Victor to take care of the body.

I will pay my respects to the family later this evening. My wolf was disagreeing with me, he wanted to stay and find whoever did this to his pack, but I had to get back to the castle.

Shifting back into my wolf form, with great speed, I run towards the castle to meet Marisela's parents.
