Chapter 12
ADAM
My bikes engine rumbles into the Falcon Ridge Security Unit. The prison is on the left side of the building so I park in that lot.
I shut the engine off and lift my leg over the seat to dismount. As I walk tall in black leather jacket to the Prison door, soldiers look me over with judgment all over their faces. I arch a brow at them and they turn away. That’s what I thought.
Falcon was never one for different. Vamps are definitely different.
I open the door and my boot thumps on the white tiled floor.
A young soldier is behind the desk. I make my way over as I look around the room.
“Can I help you?” He asks. His tone is suspicious of my intentions.
“Alpha Fredericks. I need to see him now.” I say as I side eye the door to the prison.
“Do you have an appointment?” He flips through papers on his desk.
“No.” My eyes meet his. “I didn’t have time to make one. It’s…an emergency.” I inform.
He sits down and types on his computer. “I’m sorry. You’ll have to make an appoint…”
Before he could finish, I vamp run around his desk, grab his shocked head and slam his forehead into the desk top. He falls out of his chair and crumples to the floor.
“I apologize, but I don’t have time for you.” I mumble to the unconscious man on the floor.
I snatch a keycard off his desk and blur to the door. I swipe the card and run down the hallway. It opens up at the connection to the Security Unit.
I step into the prison and look around. There’s desks and hallways. I walk up to the main desk.
“I’m looking for Alpha Fredericks?” I ask the woman behind the counter.
She looks me over. “He’s in his office. 3rd door on the left.”
“Thank you.” I nod my head to her.
I was about to leave when a loud commotion entered the prison from the Unit.
“NO! LET ME GO! EMILY! EM, YOU CAN’T DO THIS! FUCKING LET ME GO!!”
I turn to see a brown haired man struggling the grip of two Enforcers. He’s cuffed, chained to his feet and wearing two collars. He’s wearing an orange jumpsuit. Obviously, a prisoner.
“GET…MOVING!!” One grits as they pull him along.
He’s kicking and thrashing and they have to wrestle him to ground. Two more run up and grab his legs.
“EMILY!!!” He yells as he fights more.
His face looks extremely hurt and his cheeks are wet, but it’s his eyes that peaked my curiosity. Half green and half yellow pupils like the demons.
They carry him off to the incarceration hall.
I turn back to the lady. “What was that?”
“Oh my, it’s so tragic. His mate died. When they brought her back, their bond broke. From the sounds of it, she doesn’t want to get back with him. Not that I blame her. She was so sick. How someone could do that to their mate is beyond me.” She shakes her head and turns to her paperwork as she gossips.
“Who is he?”
She leans to me. “Michael Dorian. He’s apparently possessed or something. He left the poor girl to join some sicko named Lee. They spent years kidnapping and killing people. We arrested him a few weeks ago. Lee's still at large. He’s something else. A real nutcase. Anyway, they’re trying to cure Michael, but it doesn’t look like he can be.”
“He’s lycan?” I ask as I look to the hall.
She nods. “Yep. A really bad one too. Tried to attack the Head Alpha.”
“Interesting.” I mutter.
This Michael may be something I can use. If he’s part of the demon, he could lead me to him. After I talk with Fredericks, I’m going to have to make a stop before I leave.
I focus my attention back to my skull and walk down the hall.
At the 3rd door, I stop and take stock. I focus on my goal for answers as I walk in through the door.
I stop as I realize the man behind the desk, isn’t the man in the pictures I seen, but a younger version of him. The nameplate on the door says ‘Prison Unit Alpha Oliver Fredericks'. A son. He may not have the answers, but that won’t stop me from asking.
My boots thump slowly into his office as he raises his head. He’s a very thick man with dark eyes, hair and tanned skin. The stubble on his jaw makes him look threatening, but he does little for me.
I look him over as I slow my approach to his desk.
He drops his pen and arches a brow. “Can I help you?”
His voice is very low and dark, but again, I’m not the least bit affected.
I glance around his office then slowly turn my gaze to him. “The lab…Where is it?” My tone is almost like a dark dream as I remain calm and collected. My Vamp presence is right up front.
He tilts his head in confusion. “Excuse me. Who the hell are you?” I sense his irritation. He is rather short fused.
I breath deeply. Fielding these questions is starting to annoy. “You know my mother. Lainey Spencer.”
He sits up in his chair and looks me over with question. “Adam?”
I nod. “Yes.” I place my hands behind my back, puff out my chest and narrow my eyes. “Where is it?”
He stands and my eyes follow his as he buttons his suit jacket. He’s my height and trying to look tough. He must sense my power. “The last time I saw you, you were 10.”
I sigh quietly as my calm resolve slowly disintegrates with every pointless statement. I raise my brow. “I’m sure you’re aware of Lycan growth patterns. Answer the question.”
He nods and the corner of his lip ticks up. “Right. You’re the triple hybrid. It must be the vamp that makes you smell like that.”
I close my eyes and slowly open them. I lock with his eyes. “It depends on what I eat. Stop stalling.” I jut my chin out as my frustrations grow.
He starts to laugh.
“What’s so funny?” I scowl.
“I just realized. Your dad’s last name is Adams.” He chuckles more.
Hearing my fathers name stretched my patience razor thin. My jaw ticks as fire burns in my eyes. “I honor my mothers name only. I’ve carried my name for a long time. I choose the womb, not the father. He’s only the catalyst.”
He studies me. “Catalyst for what?”
That was the question that snapped my patience. “Not important! Where is the lab?!” I bark as my brows stitch together.
His lips fall and he eyes me. “You’re in my place. You keep that up and we’re going to have more than words.” He takes off his suit jacket and rolls up the sleeves of his dress shirt.
“The lab?!” I yell.
“I don’t know what the fuck you’re talking about?” He raises his chin as he crosses his arms.
“Your father had an Empire called Alliance Labs. WHERE…IS IT?!” I demand.
“How do you know about that?” He drops his arms and confusion fills his face.
“I just do. Answer!”
“Even if I did know, I wouldn’t tell you. I don’t entertain weak assholes.” He says smugly.
I nod. “Ok.” I tick my head, grab the edge of his desk and throw it to the side, putting it out of the way of him and I. Everything on it flies through the air and crashes to the floor.
I smash his jaw with a punch from the right and he returns with a punch that connects with my cheek. He follows with another left and I block it. My lycan has had enough. I grab him by the throat, lift him off the floor and pin his back to the wall.
“If you don’t tell me where the lab is…WE'RE ALL FUCKING DEAD!” I boom in his struggling face.
He grabs my forearm and tries to pull me off as he chokes. From the look on his face, he’s never been on that side of a hand before.
I calm myself and raise my chin to him as I look into his eyes. “You present yourself as tough guy, yet here you are, struggling against the grip of a 10 year old.” My head slowly tilts back and forth as my quiet, deep voice penetrates his chest.
He tries to hit my arm off, but I barely move. My eyes glow green then yellow as my lycan lurks in the shadows. His face turns red and his feet struggle to find grip on the floor as he chokes.
I lean a little closer. My fangs drop and I smirk. “Now. Are you going to answer my question or does the 10 year old have to hurt the big, bad Alpha some more?”
“I only know one. It’s empty.” He murmurs.
“Where?” I clench.
“Red Rock.” He grits. “It’s dead. You won’t find anything there. Why do you need in?”
My lycan recedes and I look him over closely. I rip my hand off and his drops to his feet. He coughs and rubs his neck as he leans on his knee.
“You better be telling the truth.” I warn.
He stands straight and adjusts his clothes. “I am.”
I scan the destruction on the floor. Suddenly, I’m flooded with feelings of remorse. It’s coming from my shifter. “I…apologize…for the desk. I needed answers.”
“It’s alright…Just maybe ask a little nicer next time.”
I side eye him. “Nicer.”
He nods.
I blink at the floor as I consider. “I’ll try to be…nicer.”
I step over the mess of his floor and leave the office.
I say I’ll try, but my life has no room for nice.
I just want to get it over with and be done with it.
I stop in the main lobby and see the entrance to the unit. Before I head to Red Rock, I must have another conversation. I leave the prison, stand in the Units front lobby, make myself invisible to cameras and blur back in. I dip past a guard entering into the incarceration area and search the floors for Michael.
Finally, I find him.
I stop in front of his cell. He’s leaning on his knees with his head hung. He looks like a man defeated and accepting of his fate. I feel for him. If his story is true, the demon is to blame. Lefu destroys. It’s all he was built to do. I was built to stop it.
Starting with him.
“You know the demon.”
He rolls his eyes to me. He cinches his brow. “Who the fuck are you?”
“It’s not important. Do you know the demon?” I ask again.
“That depends on the demon.” He answers.
I arch a brow. “Lee.”
He points to his eyes. “Obviously.”
I study the man sitting on the prison bed. It’s weird. This possessed man is not much different than me. We both have strong emotions and a tragic determination to accomplish what we desire. I wonder if can play on that.
I step to the glass wall of the prison. “I need your help.”
He smirks and tilts his head. “Why would I help you?”
“Lefu.” I watch as his eyes change. “He took your mate. I’m offering revenge if you join me instead.” My face is stone as I present my suggestion of possible freedom.
He stands and stalks the glass like a caged animal. “Revenge.” He mutters.
I nod. “To the fullest degree. I can help you.”
He shakes his head as he lowers it. “He owns me.” He whispers.
I suck in my top lip and nod. “Maybe. Let me ask you this. Can you truly own something that wasn’t for sale in the first place?”
He raises his eye to me as what I just said seemed to resonate. “Who are you?”
I step even closer. “Your salvation.” His eyes widen and I see his acceptance in them. “Be ready.”
I blur out of the prison to my bike. Starting the engine, I know that Michael will be an asset to me. If I can control him more than the hold Lefu has on him, I can use him. He will know things that I don’t know.
Once I check out the lab in Red Rock, I’ll come back for Michael then we’ll go after Lefu together.
