Chapter 24
Ares POV
Fear..
I had never ever experienced it as sever as I did then, as I ran through the forest, my heart hammering in my chest, my breathing coming out in pants as I pushed further.
I could hear it running swiftly after me, it's deep loud growls filling the forest around me, which had grown so quiet, almost as if every creature knew the danger that was lurking in the shadows when it thought no one was aware.
I ran farther, and just when I thought I had gained some distance from it, I felt my entire body being thrown off onto the the side.
I gritted my teeth as I felt my body being slammed against the ground. I sat up on my knees, my entire body shaking, blood oozing out from the wounds on my knees and palms, my breathing uneven as I lifted my head and stared at the creature in front of me.
Almost four times my size, fur as black as the night with eyes as red as blood. Teeth so long and sharp, I was certain that it could rip through and shred the strongest armor. Oozing with saliva as it locked its murderous blood thirsty eyes on me.
I felt my entire body freeze to the point where I couldn't move even if I wanted to and closed my eyes as I trembled with fear, knowing what the outcome of this would be, and oddly enough, for some reason in that moment, I had accepted it.
I heard it's growls and snarls louden as it slowly advanced towards me, a predator seeking out its prey. Each step it took, succeeded in intensifying the fear that had already taken over me and all I could so was watch it come towards me prepared to rip me apart.
It stopped just a few feet apart from me and looked at me, before it growled loudly and broke out into a run. I fully prepared for it to knock me over and crush me, but imagine my complete and utter surprise when I saw the huge beast being tackled to the ground.
I gasped out loud when I heard a loud thud echoing throughout the forest. I turned my head as I watched another creature, one I could not make out through the darkness of the forest, grab the beast into a head lock and twist it. I winced as I saw the beast bring its clawed paw down and scratch its way through the creature's side and yet it stood its ground and continued to apply pressure to the beast's head.
The creature looked to be a bit taller than me but his strength completely shook me to the core. He grabbed the beast and threw it around as if it weighed nothing. Punching his fist against it, not even wincing when the beast clawed at him and bit him a few times.
I sat on the ground breathing unevenly as the creature's face turned in my direction. I couldn't see his face at all, all that were visible were his glowing green eyes that looked like lights in the dark.
He looked at me for a second before he turned back and grabbed the beast once more, letting out a scream as he twisted it in his grasp, causing a loud crackling sound to echo before the beast fell down motionless. The creature breathing heavily as he looked down at the beast, before he turned towards me.
I felt my entire body begin to shake with the same fear, not knowing whether he was an enemy or an ally. Just because he had killed the beast didn't mean he was on my side.
I looked up when I heard him almost run to me. He dropped down in front of me and grabbed the sides of my face forcing me to look at him when I widened my eyes at who it was.
The Hybrid.
"Are you okay? Are you hurt? Do you feel pain anywhere?" He asked, among other questions, none of which I could fully register as I stared back at him while he turned my head from side to side, examining me.
"Answer me dammit! Are you hurt!" He yelled in my face causing me to flinch and tense before I shook my head swiftly.
I heard him let out a sigh before he lowered his head slightly, resting his forehead against mine, causing my entire being to fill with confusion at his tender touch and when I felt him slowly grip my face tighter, that only confused me further.
"I thought I had lost you." He whispered before he lifted his head and looked at me, his green eyes staring into mine.
"What?" I asked back.
"What were you thinking? You could have died. You have no idea what lurks in these forests. Do you even have the slightest of clues what could have happened if I wasn't here?" He asked in a soft voice, practically whispering to me, and somehow his tender touch and soft voice was doing things to me that I didn't like.
I shook my head and looked down at my hands that were planted on my lap, since I didn't know what else to say before something crossed my mind, causing me lift my head and look into his eyes once more.
"How did you find me so quickly?" I asked back and watched him smile at me as if he found my question so amusing.
"Your scent. It's all I've been smelling for the past two months. I've practically memorized it. And when I realized you had left, I ran without thinking. My instincts to protect you took over me and led me here." He answered and brought his face closer to mine.
I could feel every inch of my face heat up and I was almost certain that I looked like a blushing adolescent girl and never been more grateful for the darkness that hid it.
I felt his face draw closer to mine until his nose touched mine, something moist rolling off it onto mine causing me pull myself back and stare back at him.
"You're hurt." I said and looked at the trail of blood rolling down the sides of his face and down his forehead. I looked at the gash on his forehead and the blood oozing out of his sides and felt a slight pang in my chest.
He was hurt because of me.
"I'm fine. I'll heal soon. The important thing is that you're okay." He answered and smiled at me making me lower my head once more.
"Why? So that I fulfill whatever vindictive plans your father has for me?" I asked and felt him lift my face so that I was looking at him.
"You're important to me Ares. To me. At this point, whatever plans he has doesn't matter. When I couldn't find you in our room, I panicked, not because you couldn't do whatever insane plan he has, but because I had lost you. I knew what lies in this forest and I don't know what I would have done if you had died. If I had failed to protect the one thing that had meaning in my life." He answered.
With each word he said, I felt my heart beat faster and faster . My entire being filling with such a feeling that I had never known before. Something that took me by surprise and something I couldn't even make out.
His words, his tender touch, his protective hold onto me, the way he looked at me each time as if he was seeing me for the first time each time, all left me so completely clueless on what to say back to him and before I knew what was happening, I leaned forward, lifting myself off the ground and placing my lips against his.
I could feel him flinch out of surprise and I used that slip second to my advantage as I lifted my hands and wrapped them around his neck. I felt him run his hands down, from my neck down my waist before be wrapped them around me and pulled me against him.
I moved my mouth against his, feeling his lips against mine that were so much softer than they looked and softer than I ever imagined. It honestly took everything in me to hold myself together when I felt him slip his tongue into my mouth, running it across mine. The action sending shivers down my spine.
I pulled myself away when I felt my lunges about to give in and rested my forehead against his as I breathed unevenly and chuckled slightly. I hadn't removed my arms from his neck and looked into his eyes as I smiled at him, seeing him tilt his head at me, confused by my actions which made me smile even further.
"Thank you." I whispered as I leaned forward once more and pressed a kiss to his lips once more before I pulled back and looked at him.
"What for?" He asked back, drawing circles on my lower back.
"For saving me again."
