Be My Man, Mr. Jenkins By Flora Julius

Chapter 4

Chapter

Adriane already knew that Arthur could not make it to his engagement ceremony the moment she saw it was Albert who came to her. To be honest, she

was relieved that Arthur was not in attendance.

After all, Arthur was someone she had only seen from afar in the past life. She had never met or talked to him in person. He was like a legend to her.

Although Arthur was Adriane’s fiance now, he was no better than a stranger, Adriane was worried about the awkward atmosphere if she met him.

Adriane had been observing the hall when she walked down the stairs with Albert. She saw everything, the blooming smile on Mr. and Mrs. Stewart’s faces and all the expressions on Juliette’s face. Juliette was annoyed and jealous at first. Then there was a mocking look on her face.

Adriane began to wonder if she had lost her mind in her previous life. How could she ever think that such a despicable family was kind to her from their

heart?

As for Alexander, Adriane did not see him in the hall either. He might have gone somewhere thinking of a Plan B since Josie failed.

Just as Adriane was ready to finish her engagement ceremony alone, someone said Arthur was here. She looked at the crowd in surprise. The guests had

made way for Arthur to get into the hall.

Another man was pushing Arthur’s wheelchair, heading straight towards Adriane. They stopped when they were only three feet away from her.

Even though Adriane knew what Arthur looked like, Adriane still felt deeply shocked when she saw his face.

Arthur had a pair of sharp eyes with long and dark eyelashes above them. He looked quiet but not weak and sick at all. His nose bridge was tall and had a perfect jawline. The pale lips on his face were tightly closed as he gazed at Adriane.

He was way more handsome than those celebrities on the TV. What mesmerized Adriane was not his appearance. It was his temperament that caught her attention, making her eyes unable to get off him.

Feeling the suppressing pressure from his gaze, Adriane nervously clenched on her gown and did not dare to make a noise or even gasp.

Though he was in a wheelchair, he wore a black tailored suit, making him look formal. He sat straight and upright on the wheelchair, and Adriane could vaguely see the muscles on his thigh through his pants.

It was weird for a person with pale skin like him to have muscles.

Adriane did not dare to make eye contact with Arthur and lowered her head timidly after observing him for a while.

Arthur was observing her, too. Although he had always been indifferent to any girl’s appearance, the girl in front of him was far more beautiful than anyone else, even to him.

Her nervous little movement did not escape his eyes. After all, she was seven years younger than him and about to marry him, a useless man who could not even walk. So, it did not surprise Arthur that Adriane would be nervous and seemed hesitant to get engaged to him.

Arthur did understand her feelings, but it still made him feel uncomfortable. He was indeed an ill man. However, his pride did not allow him to accept the kindness of anyone, even that girl who had to get engaged to him because she had no choice.

After making up his mind, he looked at Albert calmly and greeted, “Father.”

“Arthur, why are you here?” Albert was puzzled. He had asked Arthur to stay in his mansion and rest well.

Arthur plastered a smile and said, “This is my engagement ceremony, after all.”

“But your health…”

Arthur hated when others mentioned his health. His pale and slender fingers tightened their grip on the armrest of the chair. Anger was boiling in him, and his gaze was burning with rage.

Albert quickly diverted the topic, “Well, it’s great that you came. Why don’t we begin the engagement ceremony then?”

Arthur did not look at Adriane again after observing her. He emphasized word by word as he spoke determinedly, “I did not come today to attend the engagement ceremony”

As soon as he spoke, there was an uproar. All the guests began to wonder his motive for coming to the engagement ceremony if he were not planning on

attending it.

Albert sensed his son’s thoughts when he saw the serious look on his face. He tried to beacon Arthur to say whatever he wanted after the ceremony

through his gaze.

However, Arthur was not going to listen to Albert. He glanced at Adriane as he said, “I’m giving you a chance to break off the engagement.”

Albert almost lost his balance and fainted when he heard that. Adriane, on the other hand, lifted her head and looked at Arthur in disbelief.

She wondered, “Is he giving me the privilege to choose whether to get engaged to him?”

Adriane make him the laughingstock of everyone in Berkton City in her previous life because she ran away. It would be worse if she refused to finish the engagement with him in front of all those guests.

After staring at each other for a few seconds, she could only see determination and seriousness through Arthur’s eyes. He was not joking. Adriane’s heart skipped a beat when she realized that. Then her heart began to hammer nervously.

Arthur had given Adriane enough privilege and dignity to choose her life, and he felt that Adriane would stop the engagement ceremony. He had heard rumors that Adriane’s parents forced her to marry him. It was supposed to be Juliette marrying him, but the Stewarts changed their choice of his bride to Adriance after the accident crippled him.

No woman would risk the happiness of the rest of their life by marrying an ill man like him.

Besides, he had noticed Adriane’s fear when she saw him.

He waited quietly for Adriane’s answer. With a calm look on his face, he wondered, “Will she cry and say that she wants to break off their engagement?”

Arthur felt a little irritated at the thought of tears flowing out from her beautiful eyes.

Everyone was waiting for Adriane’s answer. Different from the guests‘ who were enjoying the twist, Edward, Adriane’s foster father, dashed towards Adriane and shouted as he shot a warning gaze at her, “Adria, don’t rush into things. Calm down and think twice before you say anything”

Juliette was afraid of Arthur. So she did not step forward. Instead, she stomped her feet and shouted at Adriane anxiously, “Sister, you mustn’t break your
