Be My Man, Mr. Jenkins By Flora Julius

Chapter 31

Chapter 31

Subconsciously, Adriane held out her hand, thinking that maybe Arthur could help her get up. However, things did not turn out as she had expected. Instead, Arthur said, “Massage your legs and get up by yourself.”

Then, Arthur left the room in his automatic wheelchair.

Tom looked at Adriane, hesitating whether to help her. But after pondering for a while, he said nothing and followed behind Arthur

Adriane sat on the floor and looked at Arthur speechlessly as she thought, “Hey, are you leaving me here just like that? What a cruel man! At least you can help me get up. I have spent the whole morning helping you with your physiotherapy.”

There was nothing Adriane could do. She struggled to get up with her hands supporting the ground. Arthur and her eyes met in mid-air,

Adriane was a little embarrassed because the way she struggled to get up was a little unladylike, but then she thought, “Hey! I didn’t do anything wrong.”

So she glared at Arthur.

Arthur seemed to ignore Adriane’s glare and reminded Tom, “Remember to teach her.”

“Yes, Mr. Arthur.”

When Adriane came to the living room, Tom had already taken Wendy back to the hospital with him and told Yael to convey his message to Adriane that he would stop by tomorrow to teach her how to massage Arthur’s leg.

Arthur was in the living room. So Adriane said, “I didn’t say I want to learn.”

Her anger had piled up since that morning. She had wanted to remind Arthur to be careful of Wendy, but she was not in the mood anymore.

Arthur was puzzled. To Arthur, he felt that he had coaxed Adriane. So, he could not understand why Adriane was mad again.

Adriane would have rolled her eyes if she knew what was going on in Arthur’s mind. She might even retort, “When did you coax me? You only made me

angrier.”

“I’ll be in my room,” Adriane strode back to her room before Arthur could say anything.

Arthur thought that Adriane might calm down if he left her alone for a while. He still could not understand why she was madder than before. It made him begin to wonder if he had done something wrong again.

Yael approached him and asked, “Mr. Arthur, do you want to send someone to investigate Miss Carter?”

“Not now,” Arthur could guess that Wendy was up to something when he first saw her. That was why he asked Tom to bring Wendy that morning with him. Tom was capable of handling a situation like this. There was a reason Tom could work his way and become the best head doctor in the most famous private hospital in Berkton City at such a young age, despite starting his career in a government hospital.

Then Yael said, “I’ll push you back to your room.”

“Mm,” Yael pushed Arthur back to his room steadily. When they passed by Adriane’s room, Arthur could not help himself from taking an extra glimpse at

  1. it.

Yael had sharp observation skills. He noticed Arthur’s gaze and said gently, “Mr. Arthur, Miss Stewart protected you today.”

Recalling Adriane’s kick on Wendy, Arthur smiled and said, “She is like that because she is at home.”

Arthur wished Adriane could accompany him, but he was afraid that Adriane would be more annoyed if he forced her to come out of her room.

Knowing the answer, Arthur asked Yael, “Is she still angry?”

Yael tried to brush Arthur off, “I don’t think so. Adriane is a person with a good temper.”

Arthur did not believe what Yael said. Adriane had gone back to her room and shut herself in it. He was sure he had made her angry. So, he said coldly, “Are you trying to brush me off?”

Yael immediately denied, “No, I wouldn’t do that!”

After bearing the pressure from Arthur’s gaze for a while, Yael pondered and said carefully. “Miss Stewart is young, and she is just throwing some tantrum. You only need to coax her a little.”

Then Yael realized that he had said something wrong. He had never seen Arthur coaxing anyone in his years of working as Arthur’s housekeeper and

assistant.

“Sigh! It’s a tough job working for two bosses. I need to please hoth without offending anyone,” thought Yael.

“How should I coax a girl?”

Yael answered before his brain could process Arthur’s question, “Coaxing girls is nothing difficult. All you have to do is buy her some gifts. The more expensive, the better, Mr. Arthur, did you ask how to coax a girl?”

Yael broke into a cold sweat. Nervousness struck him.

Arthur did not answer. He muttered Yael’s words silently.

That night, after he hung up the call from talking to Tom, he ordered Yael to ask Adriane to have her dinner in the dining area. He even said, “Tell her what we had found out about Wendy Carter.”

Adriane was hiding the apple that she had bitten when Yael came looking for her. She did not want to lose her dignity by getting out of her room after

throwing her tantrum. There were no snacks in the mansion. So, she could only keep some fruits in her room.

“I’m not having dinner downstairs,” She shouted back at the door, refusing to open the door.

After Yael told her about Wendy, she could not stay in her room anymore. Anxiously, she opened the door and walked down the stairs. Then she sat by the dining table and asked Arthur, “What was Wendy Carter up to?”

Arthur picked up his spoon and said, “I’ll tell you everything after dinner.”

Adriane had no guts to force Arthur to tell her about it, and she was hungry. So, she sat obediently and had her dinner. After a while, she ate up two

plates of pasta.

She did not eat with Arthur at noon, so Arthur lost his appetite, But Arthur regained his appetite once he watched Adriane digging into her dinner.

After dinner, Arthur drank a mouthful of water and said, “it was Margaret who ordered her to check if I couldn’t walk for real.”

Adriane felt like throwing up when she heard Margaret’s name and recalled her face.

Although Adriane did not know how Tom investigated the truth behind Wendy’s abnormal behavior, she knew it was reliable information since Tom had personally called Arthur and told him about it. Moreover, Wendy was the most substantial proof they had.

Anger shot through Adriane as the thought of Margaret and Wendy trying to harm Arthur played in her mind. It annoyed her when someone tried to step on Arthur’s pride. She said, “I should have kicked her harder.”

Arthur had expected that the result of the investigation would spike Adriane’s anger. However, he felt a strange feeling blooming in him when he saw Adriane was quite protective when she heard someone was trying to harm him.

Arthur gazed at Adriane and asked, “Aren’t you mad at me anymore?”

Startled, Adriane coughed and retorted, “Of course, I’m still mad at you!”

“And you still want to protect me?”

“I’m angry, but it has nothing to do with me trying to protect you.”

Chapter 31

“What will I need to do to make it up to you?”

Adriane was stunned. Thoughts ran wildly in her mind, “Is this the Mr. Arthur she knew? I thought he only gives others orders and wouldn’t apologize.”

Seeing that Adriane was not answering him, he asked again patiently, “I need your help with my rehabilitation and massage in the future. So, what would I need to do to make you agree?”

Puzzled, Adriane replied, “You can order me to assist you.”

“I don’t want to make you angry.”

Adriane looked at Arthur in disbelief. She was bewildered that Arthur was willing to ask her opinion nicely. So, Adriane decided to make use of this opportunity. It was an opportunity that she would not always get.

She had to investigate her family background. To do that, she needed absolute freedom instead of requesting Arthur to help her with it.

Adriane cleared her throat and tried to negotiate, “I want to go out.”

Arthur frowned, “I have not restricted your freedom.”

“Do I have to report my whereabouts to you?”

For a moment, Arthur was about to say yes, but then he said, “No.”

Adriane smiled, “That’s all I want.”

It left Arthur in a puzzled state. Adriane did not ask for any gift like Yael had told him.

But Arthur chose to forget about it because what mattered was Adriane was happy now. Then he diverted their topic of discussion to Margaret, “I’m going to hand this matter to you. You can do whatever you want to her.”

“Huh?” Adriane was again bewildered, “I don’t think it’s suitable for me to handle this matter.”

“It doesn’t matter. You have to train your courage.”
