Chapter 25
After walking for one hour, Deon was not feeling his left shoulder which was carrying John on it and Franklin didn’t have a strong physique that helps him carry a man like John who is 185 cm tall and nearly 85 kilograms, and Franklin was give or take 170 cm tall and have a thin body so Deon didn’t have another choice but patience.
“I told you million times let me carry him…I’m stronger more than you thought” said Franklin but Deon wasn’t convinced so he didn’t said anything back.
“Answer me when I talk to you, boy” said Franklin in angry tone.
“Alright old man…as you like” said Deon.
They exchanged roles. “He is heavy” said Franklin to himself but he didn’t show any sign of it to Deon.
The men continued their journey into unknown, the journey that was refused by everybody since the very beginning as the two men was thinking in a lot of things like if the call who was made by their out of consciousness friend was right or it was just an insanity and a desperate decision. They was thinking if their friend will survive or the wound will become rotten and his grave will be that this decision that he called by himself, even if they found the base what insure that this alien Zarro and his friend didn’t destroy it too.
They were spies, surly they didn’t left before making as much damage as possible to the resistance. All this fears and thoughts were making them only more gloom and with the sunrise another fear has rose.
“Is the wound tightened well?” said Franklin and so Deon started to examine and making sure everything was alright.
“Yes” said Deon.
“It seems that you’re tired” said Deon to Franklin who was breathing heavy.
“No I’m not tired…I’m alright” said Franklin with a tired yet enthusiastic voice.
“Really? You’re carrying him now for nearly 15 minutes…you sure you alright?”
“Really?! That’s good…what a great workout”
Deon knew that Franklin was mocking himself being an old man and his stamina was not like in the past.
“I still know the way to the gym, kid” said Franklin with a smile on his face.
“My shoulder is alright now we can switch roles” said Deon.
Franklin was wordless for a moments before he said: alright…I guess some rest won’t hurt.
Franklin and Deon exchanged roles and continued the journey.
“Um…if we did accepted the offer that alien Zarro made to us…we would be here?” said Franklin but he got an angry and fast response from Deon: shut up or I’ll bury you here.
“Don’t get it the wrong way son…I only wanted to know about this life”
“What…the life of slaves?”
“No, the life of the aliens”
“Are you daydreaming?”
“Why you’re saying that?”
“Haven’t you heard yourself?”
“I mean being a slave better than get killed”
“Even you Frank? C’mon man…we’re saving humanity and you here saying stuff like this”
There was temporarily silence before Deon said: you know…I don’t believe anything anymore…I don’t believe anything around me…I had suspicions that this aliens might be somehow watching us and I was right…even our commander received a bribe from them.
“You mean he was about to get a bribe”
“I don’t know if he received anything from them before but he surly don’t deserve to be our leader”
“You’re right”
“These aliens killed our families and our loved ones in every way possible…how could just give up for some money”
“You’re a good man, Deon”
“Why? Because I didn’t forgot what they did? You gotta be kidding me…I’m sure that they hurt you in some way”
Franklin took a deep breath remembering countless feelings: sure, Deon.
“So tell me…how could we give up and just let it go without a fight?”
“I’m not strong like you son...I’m a just an old man”
“It’s all about ethics”
“Ethics?”
“The Major for example…he was ready to sell everything to survive, even his family probably got killed by them but he chose to (save our life)…from a materialistic point of view it seems right but it’s not wall street around here…we can’t make deals with enemy…it’s just war…kill or get killed.
“Damn…you’re ready to die, son…but I think he had good intentions” said Franklin.
“This is nothing but fear, how he can call himself a fighter and he is afraid of death? Our mission to protect what remains from the human civilization and not to make deals with the enemy”
Franklin was speechless, his face expressions was saying that something inside him has changed.
“You’re right…again…you changed how I look at this…you changed my thoughts, son”
“About what?”
“About what we are fighting for”
“What do you mean?”
“Frankly…I have begun to feel desperate about this and we are fighting for nothing...I mean look around you”
Deon felt what Franklin was saying, what they saw of death and destruction can break the toughest men. “I can’t blame you, Frankie…you lost your whole family before your eyes…even you didn’t ever talked about but you were talking to yourself” said Deon to himself.
The poor man was wishing that he could go back in time to save anyone of them.
After one hour and 30 minutes of walking under the sun of august the two men needed some rest and taking their breath and they chose a perfect spot to take some rest; nearly destructed building of three floors. They walked in hoping that it will protect them from the heat of the sun for a while.
“How much left to get their?” Deon asked and his lunges were working like v8 engine.
Franklin took the map out of his bag and started to value the distance.
“Well…we still have some distance to go”
“Be specific, man”
“We were off at the dusk time and we supposed to arrive there at the midday but we were late because of this stupid monsters…this kid will be exposed to the sun the whole day”
“Crap…it’s my fault that had this fight”
“No It’s not…it was expected that we meet some monsters on our way…but we are lucky that we met that kind of them”
“What do you mean?”
“I mean it’s good that we met the fat and huge monsters and we came across the faster ones…we would’ve dead, and we also at the daytime so large numbers of them are resting under the sun light”
Deon felt good after hearing this words from Franklin, it was like a weight of the world was off his shoulder.
“Alright…let’s forget about this and let’s have some water to recover a little bit” said Franklin trying to cheer up his friend.
“Didn’t you noticed something, Frank?” said Deon as he was trying to help John to drink some water.
“What?”
“We haven’t met a lot of monsters…only the four ugly giants who chased after us”
“Of course…it’s a safe route…not really”
“I mean that there is no explosion and roars like before…the atmosphere just got calmed down”
“You, just forget about this daydreams and drink some water…we need to go” said Franklin with decide tone.
Deon drunk some water and gave the bottle to Franklin to save it safely in the bag then Deon carried John on his shoulder and they off.
“Analytic head of yours will kill us someday” said Franklin joking with his young friend.
