Chapter 6
Chapter 6
Claire’s POV
The whole time I’ve been in the hospital reading medical reports and reviewing patients‘ medical histories, Lucas has been calling me continuously. I kept looking at my buzzing phone on the desk, and I found him really annoying this
time.
I put down my work and sighed as I answered the phone, asking, “Lucas…”
“Where are you, Claire?” He asked in a tense but quieter tone this time.
I said curtly, “I’m at the hospital, working.”
“Are you working at this time?” he asked as if working at this hour was not normal for me.
“Yes, what do you want?” I wondered after clearing my throat.
“I’ll be there in a minute, let me pick you up,” he said.
Why? What gives him the nerve to get me so late at night? Was the party over? Or maybe he’s trying to be a good husband.
“Luc-” But before I could say something, the line went dead.
I organized everything on my desk and grabbed a folder. Then, walking down the hallway, the hospital guard greeted me with a smile. “Good evening, Dr. Claire,” he said.
“Good evening,” I replied.
While waiting for Lucas, I went to the parking lot and loaded my things into my car. I always bring my car with me. And it was unusual for him to offer to pick me up at this hour.
After locking the car, I stashed my keys in my purse and headed back to the entrance. Right on time, Lucas pulled up. “There you are!” Lucas exclaimed, stepping out of his car. He walked towards me, kissed my cheek, and said, “Let’s go.”
Ås I opened the front passenger door, I was met with a sight I didn’t expect. May sat there, her eyes twinkling as she greeted me. “Oh, hey Claire! It’s nice to see you again,” she chirped.
Shock rendered me speechless. My feelings towards her were undeniably bitter.
“Lucas was just giving me a ride home,” May continued. “I get so carsick in the back. Mind if I take the shotgun seat?” And Lucas said, “Don’t worry, I’ll drop May first and then you can take the front seat all for yourself.
I didn’t say anything, I just nodded my head and hopped in the backseat with a tired heavy heart. I put on my seat–belt while watching them together smiling at each other and it felt like a sore eye to me.
The ride was filled with May‘ s laughter and random talks, and I just politely nodded my head every time she tried to get me into their conversation.
Finally, we reached May‘ s apartment. As she hopped out, she turned on me with a mischievous smile playing on her lips. “See you again, Claire!” She winked and waved her hand goodbye.
When Lucas started to drive the car, he pulled it up a meter away from May‘ s apartment.
I sighed and asked, “So, what was that about?‘
He sighed, frustrated. “May was bored at home, so I took her out for a bit. She’s a good friend, and you don’t have to worry about anything.
I kept my mouth shut because I was tired of hearing all my husband’s lies.
“Come on, Claire. Move to the front so we can talk properly…” he asked as if he were begging.
I shook my head and said, “I’m tired and want to sleep.
He climbed out of the car and opened the backseat to sit next to me; he asked, “What‘ s wrong with you? Are you mad again because of May? I swear there’s nothing-
I put my finger on his lips, “Alright.
He pursed his lips in anger and leaned forward so that I could feel his warm breath on my cheek. And before I could react, he was trying to kiss me.
“Lucas…” I shoved him away with anger. “What are you doing?!”
But he was mad, so he grabbed my shirt s collar and tore my clothes in force, and because of what he did, I slapped him hard on the face, making him face the reality that I didn’t want him anymore.
He paused and sighed, “Claire…”

Without another word, I bolted out of his car. My heart hammered in my chest as I sprinted out down the street. And to my surprise, a tinted black car stopped right before me.
A tall, muscular man stepped out and offered a hand, “Claire…”
I looked up, tears streaming down my cheeks as I mumbled, “J–Jackson?”
