Bastard Husband

Chapter 4

Chapter 4

Claire’s POV

It’s been three days since I haven’t seen Lucas. But I’ve been busy with work, so I don‘ t really ask what was going on with him for these past few days. I grab some gloves in the drawer, and my phone buzzes in my pocket. I slipped it off and read the message; it was from Lucas.

“In case you’re wondering where I have been for these past few days. I’ve got stuck on a business trip but everything is sorted now. Here’s my location.

He even sent his location. I scoffed. Funny. He really thought that I cared about where he was right now.

But then I clicked his location and nodded my head. “He s really on a business trip,” I muttered to myself, sitting at my desk.

I replied to him, “Alright, have fun.

But a coldness settled in my stomach as I scrolled through Instagram. A post from May caught my eye.

Then there’s a photo of her she uploaded two minutes ago, beaming and holding a box overflowing with pastries–the same ones Lucas loved from that little bakery in Italy.

I gasped softly and put my hand over my mouth as if the location that Lucas had sent me matched the location tag of May s post.

I carefully set my phone aside and fixed my gaze on my wedding ring. I don‘ t know what this wedding ring really means anymore. It used to signify our love and loyalty, but now it means nothing.

Anger–filled tears fell from my eyes as I took it off and threw it in my drawer.

Then a knock on my door made me stand up straight and open the door, “Yes?”

“Doctor Claire, there‘ s an emergency-

I took a deep breath and said, “Okay, I got it.” I stormed out of my office and walked to the surgery room, where a patient was waiting for me.

I’m too busy with work to worry about when my jerk husband will come back; he’s no longer worth my time.

One day later, I’ve been busy with work all day, trying to list all the medical reports and transfer them into another file. Then I looked up when I heard my door creak open. I gasped as I saw Lucas standing in front of me with a bouquet of roses in his hand.

He smiled at me, “Hey, honey… surprise,

I put my pen down and stood up, “Oh, what brings you here?”

“It’s our third wedding anniversary…” he said with a smile slowly fading off of his face.

I nod my head and said, “Oh, I’m sorry I forgot-”

“You forgot?” he asked in surprise.

39

He was shocked that I had forgotten our anniversary. I used to be the one who put in all the effort to make it special, but now, it seemed I had lost interest.

He sighed as he handed me the bouquet and said, “How about we celebrate it in a nice restaurant? I already booked a reservation for us.”

“Oh, okay. That‘ s great.” I said bluntly and walked past him.

And when we arrived at the restaurant, he suddenly grabbed my hand and asked, “Where’s your ring?”

“Oh, I’ve got a surgery today so I took it off.” I answered softly and sat.

He sat across from me and adjusted his necktie, it looked like he was really frustrated this time. “It’s our wedding anniversary, you forgot about it and now you don‘ t even wear your ring.”

Here we go again, this man was full of bullshit. I was about to excuse myself when his phone rang and he answered it immediately right in front of me. “May? What happened? W–What? Alright! I’m on my way…”

He glanced at me, and I stared at him with a fake smile on my face, “It’s okay, you can go.

That night, he gave me his black card and said, “Next time, I’ll make it up to you. Take this, and you can order anything you want,” He quickly kissed me on the forehead and left.

After a sigh and a happy bite of the cake, I ordered the most expensive wine in the restaurant. The waitress carefully brought it to me and said, “This is Domaine de la Romanee-Conti Grand Cru 1945. Enjoy your wine, Madam.”

As I made my way home, I tossed my red stilettos into a corner and pulled out my phone to check my notifications. To my surprise, I saw May’s most recent post, which included a photo of Lucas with her kid in the hospital wing. I laughed softly and whispered under my breath, “He didn’t even try to hide the fact that he was cheating on me…”
