Bastard Husband

Chapter 11

Chapter 11

Chapter 11

Claire & POV

I walked towards Jackson, who had a few wounds on his face; I bit my lower lip in shame. I hold his hand and take him with me to my clinic to treat his wounds. “Oh my god, I’m sorry for what happened-

“It s okay…” he said as he groaned in pain.

I settled him into the chair, then prepared the first aid kit and a damp cloth. My steps towards him felt measured, the air crackling with unspoken tension. My hand cupped his chin as I reached him, forcing him to meet my gaze. I slowly dabbed the scrapes on his face and kept apologizing, “I’m really sorry…”

I poured sanitary alcohol onto the white cotton and slowly dabbed it at his open wounds. He groaned in pain, biting his pinkish lips. “You don‘ t have to say sorry,” he rasped. “It wasn‘ t your fault, Claire. You did what you had to do. You‘ re doing a great job by choosing to free yourself this time. I know… I know that bastard was cheating on

you

I sighed softly and put the band–aid on his face; then, suddenly, he took hold of my hand while staring directly into my eyes. My heart became confused about what he was doing; I froze and waited for him to say something.

“Lucas was right, you know?” he said.

I slowly pulled my hand away from him and asked in confusion, “What are you talking about?”

And all of a sudden, unexpectedly, Jackson‘ s voice broke the silence. “He was right,” he admitted. “I do have feelings for you. For almost three years, I kept them buried, Claire. But ever since you walked into my life, you brought this incredible light with you. You gave my life meaning and a purpose–a purpose for me to be a better person. And even if you are far away from me….” his voice trailed off, pausing for a second while his gaze held onto mine, “It doesn’t stop me from caring for you… I always care for you, Claire.”

Panic bloomed in my heart, I didn’t know what to do or to even say to him. I was terrified of saying something that would upset him. Here I was, freshly separated but then there’s this guy right in front of me, confessing his true feelings.

“Jackson-”

And before I could say something, he said, “Don’t worry. I am not asking you to answer me right away. I understand, Claire….. If I keep these feelings for three years, I can wait for much longer until you‘ re ready to open up your heart again.

I smiled at him and escorted him to the door of my clinic, “Here you go…” I said as I gave him an ointment for his

wound.

He smiled back at me, “Thank you. Can I see you again tomorrow?”

I replied, “Uhm, this training only lasts for a year, and tomorrow‘ s going to be a whirlwind. I don’t think I can swing it.

He said smoothly, “I understand. Busy days ahead, right?”

“Exactly.” I forced a smile, feeling hesitant as I was about to close the door, but before I closed it, I said, “Maybe next week?”

His lips playfully smiled at me as he said, “Perhaps? Maybe we can cross paths again, Dr. Claire.”

I nod my head, “Yes, Dr. Jackson.

And I closed the door behind my back, sighing in relief.

Coming home from an eight–hour shift, I made it to my flat close to the hospital. I went inside and sat down on my couch while looking through my phone to find out what was going on with Lucas. I need to look at May’s post to see if they are still together.

I gasped when I saw May’s most recent post. In it, she is kissing her ex–husband while standing in front of a brand–new Maserati. The caption says, “Thank you for the gift, my love.” “Hmm, I guess Karma’s a bitch,” I whispered with a smile.
