Chapter 10: Best Friend
Jade's POV
Looking at me was the father of my unborn child.
What the hell was he doing here? Was Kyle following me?
I cancelled on him tonight so he decides to stalk me. I turn my attention to the woman who was standing beside him. Of course, it all made sense now. Because I was unavailable tonight he went and find one of his pets.
"Kyle? I mean Mr. Dale, what are you doing here?" Ignoring his female companion.
He ignored my question. "I didn't know you had a taste for art."
"Yes, she does." I almost forgot that Cassie was at my side. She better behave herself. Kyle was still my boss and I still needed my job even though I was a couple of million dollars richer.
"I do. My mother was an artist and so is my brother, he's actually the one who invited me here tonight." I answered respectfully but my heart was in pain. I didn't like the fact that he had it in him to get a new woman because I choose to cancel on him tonight.
"Really? What's your mother's name?" the lady at his side ask.
"Her name was Jennifer Powell-Brown. She was famous mostly for capturing famous monuments."
"Oh, sorry. I hadn't known she had passed."
"That's okay, It was years ago. Who might you be?"
She laughs and her blond hair moved on her shoulder. She is beautiful, her skin was smooth and probably soft too. She looked a bit older than Kyle's regular type but she was something to look at. "Heidi Mason, I'm the artist and owner of the gallery."
I could feel Cassie reaction, I laughed in my thoughts.
"You have some lovely paintings, I naturally thought it was a man who painted this half-naked woman," Cassie stated.
"So are you stating that only a man can paint a woman"? Heidi asked Cassie, Heidi did not have a pleased look on her face. I looked at Kyle who was just staring at me, I quickly turn back my attention to the older lady.
"No, Ms. Mason what my friend Cassie meant was that she never thought a woman who be bold even to show another woman's body in public for display. You see Cassie her was grown up in a very strict religious family and the body is sacred to her. I'm sorry if she offended you in any way."
"I couldn't possibly be offended by someone of her class." her words caught be like a bullet.
"My class?" And what might that be Mrs. Mason" Cassie said angrily with emphasis on the Mrs. My eyes went down to the woman's hand.
So Kyle likes older married woman, Interesting.
"Cassie please, let's not get in an argument with Ms. Mason. Remember we don't argue with dogs." Looking at my friend.
I turn to the pair in front of me. Mrs. Mason looking completely taken back, after all I just insulted her in her own place. Kyle looked angry, but who cares? "If you'll excuse me, our date seems to be looking for
us,"
I took a hold of Cassie's left hand and pulled her in direction of Josh. I knew Cassie was still in shock at my words, she knows that I'm not normally this feisty. Maybe it was the pregnancy hormones messing with me or it could just be the fact that Kyle was standing beside the bitch with his hands around her waist.
"Are you girls having fun?" Josh asked as he say us approaching in his direction.
"No, I'm not having fun. It's boring here, I just watched your sister dissed the owner of this place."
"You did what?" Josh looked at me shocked.
"She was trying to dis Cassie and I'm not going to stand there while a bitch mess with my best friend."
Josh smiled. "And you said I'm the bad one."
I laughed, "I'm bad when I need to be."
"Can we go before I punch the next person who says something to me?" Cassie says annoyed.
"Okay, you guys go. I'll meet you in the parking lot in a few minutes."
Cassie and I made our way out of the building into the parking lot to where my car was parked. I opened the car with my spare keys and we entered. When we were fully seated in the car Cassie decide to speak.
"I can't believe you were so calm with him, I would have slapped him across his face."
I laughed, that was exactly what i wanted to do. "Cassandra, he's my boss and we were in an art gallery filled with wealthy people. It would have to be embarrassing to me because everyone already knows how he is with women. I would have looked like a jealous gold digger."
"Well that's true, but he's a bastard."
"Yes, he is. Probably the biggest one I've met but he's still my boss and I haven't spoken to him about the pregnancy yet."
Cassie jumps in joy. "I still can't believe your pregnant. I'm going to be an aunt and a godmother. The best one ever. When are we going to start buying proms and clothes?"
I laugh, it seems Cassie was more excited about this baby than I was. "Cass, I'm just a few weeks pregnant. It's not time yet. You'll be the first person I grab to come to buy things with me."
"Oh, I'm so excited. What are you going to name her? Cassandra is a good name what do you think?"
Smiling I look at her, of course, she would want me to name my baby after her, we're best friends. "Cassie, I don't know if it's a girl or a boy."
"It's a girl. I can tell."
"Okay, if it's a girl then I'll name her Cassandra as her middle name."
"Fair enough."
I smiled, it was a good evening. I was with the two most important people in my life and they were happy.
"Have you told Josh that he's going to be an uncle?"
"No I haven't and I don't want you to tell him either. I'm just not ready yet, I will tell him when the time is right." When will that be though? I never thought I would be wondering how it would feel to have Josh giving me a disappointed look because that's what he'll do when he finds out I'm pregnant for my boss who is paying me for the baby. I basically sold my child to make him happy. "When is the time going to be right?"
"I don't know yet, Cassie. I'm just afraid that he won't see me the same. After all, I sold my child."
"I thought you said you get to keep the baby." She looked at me with worried eyes.
"I do get to keep the baby but it's also my boss's baby, It's Kyle's baby. The baby he paid for. I'm scared." She touched my shoulders to show sympathy.
"You're the best person I know, you'll be a fantastic mom and I will be the best aunt ever, I'm not going anywhere." I turn around and look at the back seat, my best friend smiling.
I smiled in return. With tiny teardrops falling from my eyes. I really don't deserve her.
"Thank you. You'll be the best aunt in the world, in fact, I'll give you mid-night duties."
She laughs, "Okay, I agree with the best aunt thing but the mid-night duties? Cross that off your list because I'm no friend to tiny screams and you know I'm the sleep death type of person."
I rubbed my chin and laugh, "Come to think of it, I definitely don't want you to make my baby starve."
"I'm not that bad."
"Oh, I think you are." Cassie knew I was just messing with her, she was one of the few persons in this world that I trust with my life and the number was small. I trust her with my baby as I would with my life. "Enough of me, how is your grandmother doing?"
Cassie volume went down, "Same old, same old. It's not easy because one day she'll remember who I am and the next she'd start calling me my mom's name. It's not the happiest of situations but it was so much worst when she had the stroke." Cassie's grandmother who is 67 suffered a stroke not too long ago and it has been a bad time for her family since.
When Cassie's dad came home drunk, when her mom was depressed she and her sister, Melissa always had their grandmother who lived across the street. She was their safe haven.
They'd go to her house whenever her parents were having an argument.
Now Sandra had Alzheimer's disease and that just made things worst. Her mom wasn't helping much because she had her own problems.
It was a good thing that Cassie was strong, strong enough not to have become depressed over her circumstances.
"Cassie, do what your grandma always tell you to do, Pray. God will help you."
Cassie laughed. "When did you became so religious?"
"When I started having sex with my..." I paused and laughed. "I need God to help me with this one cause I've myself in deep waters and I can't even swim."
