At Least I Had Her

Chapter 1 month, 21 days, 18 hours after

The screams were deafening and made my stomach boil like lava. As I look up at the force field, it opens. CRACK, the electricity went, sounding like a lightning strike disrupting everything around us. A missile comes through the hole in the forcefield, flying across the sky, leaving a yellow smoke. I see a bird fly into it and it immediately falls from the sky. I run into the house, closing the door behind me trying to lock it like my father said I should. But there was no lock. No. No. There should be a lock. There should be an emergency lock that locks the door and drops a shield down over the doors and all the windows. Where is the fucking lock? I hear Lexi’s tiny hard footsteps run down the steps.

“What’s going on?”

As I turn around to explain how I have no idea what’s going on, I see her face and it is sunken in, shriveled. She falls just like the bird. My eyes go blurry.

I gasp for air and sit up so quickly my head spins. My hands are clammy and my shirt is drenched in sweat. I don’t even know what I was dreaming about but all I know is that it scared the living shit out of me and was too real. Probably because it is real.
