Chapter 35
A/N: Hey guys... the last chapter of the book. I really hope the story lived up to your expectations.
If there is anything left unsaid... it’s mostly because it will be taken over in the second book, like Mina and Silver’s mating. Zyon... and all. But do leave the questions you want to see answered.
After this chapter, you will have the epilogue (which takes place after ten years). May be updated on this Saturday and Sunday. After that, loads of bonus content.
Not to mention, the voting for which book to be written is still open. Go ahead and vote for your favourite synopsis. (Perhaps I will put up a book where I will showcase all my future plans and you get to choose what I write next.)
I was having a few false news about a few tests because of which I could not write for three days.
Anyways, the word count of this chapter: 5247. Total word count: 13,881.
I have mixed feelings which we can talk about later. Enjoy the update!
*******
I had always imagined if the fire Miguel summoned burnt his other form, but now I knew what it felt like when I breathed fire. I had to avenge the death of Brent and that was all my instincts knew then.
I raised my head and roared. Never did I expect myself to be someone with a flair for drama, but then, fire spewed out and I could imagine what a scene I would be.
The rational part of me sighed and tried to tone it down, while the newly awakened part that loved this attention wanted to spread my wings and show others how mighty I was.
While I had to battle my feelings, milder pain ran through me. Closing my eyes, I searched and found that Aspen had been a hidden shifter and she had shifted to a poisonous bird for the first time. Followed by her shift was Miguel Marking her.
How the hell did Varian know Miguel would do something like this? I meant both of us won the damned bet. I shook my head. At least after this mating, he could grow more brain cells.
I looked down to see Alioth gaping at me. She was a star was she not? Did she not see the dawn of the dinosaurs? So a big reptile that could fly was nothing for her then but seeing one now was a huge thing huh?
I bent down to see what Harper was doing. While everyone feared my other form, Harper smirked at me. Pressing a button, the glass opened and Harper took a step forward.
“Lyra Throne,” Harper said, shaking her head. “Only if I had known earlier. If I had known that you were a pulsar, I would have killed you not banished you.”
I snarled at her. She had killed three people close to me when she banished me. My father, Aurelia and Cathara. She had even managed to kill a Huntress.
Two energies dropped next to me. I knew one way better than I knew myself. And the other happened to be very powerful energy.
“A dragon,” he said wistfully. “What a mighty sight to behold.”
The hybrid scoffed. “That’s all you see?”
“Well,” Aries drawled. “What do you see?”
“I saw Melantha, Dubhe and the four hybrids,” Megrez said.
Four hybrids? They were born already?
Lyra? Aries asked. Alright?
No, I mumbled. I... don’t know how to shift back.
There was a gentle chuckle from his side. Just... think of what makes you human. What makes you Lyra Throne.
Closing my eyes, my mind showed me images of myself when I caught on the glass panels of the lab. That image of me wearing a coat and working hours non-stop. That image of me depending on coffee. The image of my team taking a huge rest and vacation when we finished a project.
The memory of Evelyn cooking pasta and Rhaze spoiling it. The memory of Raoul being mad at Liv for not coming to dinner on time. The memory of Cain whisking me away when I had been a kid. The memory of Aries holding me tightly against the world when I was falling apart.
These were the things that me who I was. I was Lyra Throne.
Slowly, my size reduced and my human skin replaced the scales. Yet, the heat that was running haphazardly in me was not quelled. Nothing could.
Upon seeing Alioth, Aries and Megrez, Harper’s eyes widened. Her icy blue eyes showed a hint of fear. Who was Melantha scared off?
Sharing glances with them, we raised up to the second floor and entered the building through the opening Harper had opened. It was quite nice being a creature of space. Using energy like that, I could get addicted to it.
We four softly landed on the floor and only then did I notice four hybrids standing behind Nira and Dubhe. Those four appeared they were twelve years. I could not believe that they were merely just a few days older.
While the boy with silver eyes said he was a star, the other boy with green eyes showed me his hidden beast. The girl with silver hair bared her fangs fit for sucking blood while the girl with the darkest hair created green flecks of magic out of nowhere.
These were the hybrids they told me about.
“Wu,” Melantha called, and the girl with the silver hair stepped forward. “Do you know what to do?”
She smirked at us. “I do.”
“Rian,” Harper said, turning around and the boy with green eyes snarled in response. “Help your sister.”
With that, the boy gave way to a bear.
“Vina,” The female alpha called.
The girl with green magic stood before her mother.
“Kage,” Melantha said.
The star came and stood next to her.
Clever, Aries commented. She named the four after the four celestial stars who aided Surva fight Faolan. Out of the four, only one survives.
“Fight them and win,” Melantha challenged. “I will concede defeat.”
I growled in response. She wanted a fight? She was going to get one.
I took a step forwards and Harper had Alpha Violet by her neck. “Tut tut tut. Has anyone ever thought you? That you should never jump into anything just like that?”
The chain dangled from Alpha Violet’s neck. And the pendant looked exactly like how it was when I used to play with it. It was a long dice, with similar markings on it. This was the link Melantha was searching for to destroy any chances of Luna escaping.
Alpha Violet, I reached out to her. This was the first time I was mind-linking to someone I did not have a bond with.
Lyra, she replied and her surprise could not be masked. You can link me?
I am... a star, I said. Of a sort.
That’s good, she said. That means the little girl I knew is a very strong girl now.
Alpha Violet! I said. Had it been any other scenario, I would have been blushing.
I know, she said, coughing. You have led this war against my son. My son. What he did was wrong and I can only hope Rhaze and Cain can spare him some mercy.
I blinked. What?
You don’t know? She asked. Cain and Rhaze have challenged him. His title. You know how this works. Challenge to the title, unless someone concedes, it is a fight to deathmatch. With Cain being the Hunter of Luna, I know who I should be worried about.
I wished I could say anything, but that one look on her face was enough. Alpha Violet, a friend of Beta Evelyn knew what I felt. She gave me a sad smile. Just as her son was important to her, my siblings were important to me.
Alpha Violet, I began. That chain you have...
Given to me by my father, she said. What about it?
Your father is the Alpha of Autumn Pack? I asked.
Alpha Violet shook her head. Nay. My great-grandfather was the Alpha of Autumn Pack.
That was how the key fell in her hands.
That chain... I said. It is one of the keys that would free Luna.
Thankfully Alpha Violet did not betray any emotions on her face. Free Luna? Don’t you think Harper can hear us?
I glanced at Harper who was exchanging words with Megrez. I dove right in and searched her mind. As much as her mind was guarded, she did not have that power to invade my mind.
She is not, I said. Trust me.
Okay, she said. Take the chain then, Lyra. If this might set Luna free, then I can’t see it as a family heirloom. If... Ethan survives, I don’t think he would have any children and to whom can I pass it down to?
I nodded my head and just as I snapped from my conversation with Alpha Violet, Rian came at me. He shifted into a beast from nightmares just before he could pounce on me. I moved just in time to avoid a blow.
And just like that, the fight began. Kage did not allow anyone to near both Dubhe and Nira. Wu took her fight to Alioth while Vina dared to attack Aries. Megrez and I were fighting Rian.
I had to admit, the hybrids were damn powerful. Rian kept shifting into various forms of canines and felines.
Megrez growled. “I will take care of this fetus, Lyra. Go do your work.”
I nodded and inched closer to the computer. Harper still held the knife to Alpha Violet’s throat. When the cold blade kissed my previous Alpha’s skin, Alpha Violet snapped and hit Harper’s face with the back of her head.
The move was so sudden that even that star lost her balance. But Alpha Violet did not stop there. Seeing this was an entry, she and Alpha Charles began fighting that star.
Two pierces through my heart was enough for me to know that I had lost two members. Cat and Cher were gone. No more. It was only then I came to know what had happened to Cher to make her behave like that.
Insanity gripped me, but I anchored to Liv who was giving me strength. With that, I pushed forward and entered the password. The computers flared to life and I began to type the codes required to stop this madness.
There was a loud crash but I dared not raise my head from the screen. A single mistake and these nanites would explode, killing everyone. I had to decode it carefully.
A commotion rose around me and screams and shouts raged on. But my fingers danced on the keyboard that I knew so well and my eyes scanned on the lines my hands typed.
Occasionally my right hand flew to the mouse on the side, but otherwise only the click of the keys resonated in my ears. Hearing the sound after a long time, it was enough to put me at ease.
It was then I realised that not all battles had to be fought on the battlefield. You had to fight your battle in your field. If your fight was on a terrain you did not know about, you have to bring the battle to the place you knew the best.
I could be out there fighting alongside my pack and friends, but what use would it serve? Nothing.
Harper once came close enough, but Saiph, who had come some time ago, blocked her from me.
Only a last few commands were left. It was then an ugly cry shattered me from my concentration. It was the cry of a mate losing his other half mingled with a mother losing her child.
Nira was unconsciously lying on the floor while Dubhe dropped next to Wu. Aries had mercilessly ripped her apart. Wu’s death did stop everybody there. Aries calmed his fire and gave Taurus a nod which the other Warrior returned. And the fight resumed.
Alioth and Saiph were fighting Rian while Megrez single-handedly fought Kage. Vina was caught by Taurus by her neck. Next to this gore, Alpha Charles was next to Alpha Violet who closed her eyes slowly, giving her mate one last smile. They seemed to be communicating and I looked away. Harper was standing quite far away with fear written all over her face. Next to her was a Pulsar who was bound. Feeling that dark energy from him, I knew he was Gaelan.
Dubhe shrieked next when Taurus crushed Vina’s neck. And just before Alioth punched Rian with her energy, Dubhe shouted at her sister to let her son go, but it was too late. Rian was burnt from inside out.
Megrez was fighting the last one. It did seem like Kage was losing. With his sibling dead, I could not imagine how he was holding himself up.
“Megrez,” Dubhe called, her voice frail with pain. “Please. Spare my son.”
Megrez had him, but she glared at Dubhe. “Do you know each of their fates?”
Tears flowed down Dubhe’s face, but she shook her head. “I do. I do. But don’t you think you can change that?”
Megrez stared at her sister. “It is not that easy. Qamar never reveals anyone’s fate to anyone. He did now and there had to be a reason.”
“How can you kill children just because their fates say so?” Dubhe asked. “What have they done until now?”
Alioth took a step forward. “Two centuries ago, when Fie was begging for her daughter’s life, you said you knew her daughter’s future. That was the reason why you issued that verdict.”
“Yes!” Dubhe shrieked. “I know. But... I understand Fie now. I understand her now. I could only wish to go back in time to change my verdict then.”
Taurus cleared his throat. “Dubhe? Is that the reason why you resigned from being the minister at your father’s court?”
Dubhe nodded. “I felt so guilty after I gave that verdict. But only today I realise what Fie had gone through.”
Aries inhaled sharply. “Had they not been your kids, what would your verdict be, holder of law?”
Tears streamed down from her silver eyes, she looked into Aries’ eyes. “I would order you to kill them all.”
None moved and Dubhe’s chin quivered. “But... they are my children. I cannot bear to see them die. At least... please let Kage live. Please?” she brought her palms together and was on her knees. “I... I am begging as a mother. Please. Let my son live.”
Polaris! I called out to him, but the Northern Star refused to answer me.
The verdict laid in Megrez’s hands. It was her spear that was directed towards Kage. She lowered her spear slowly, keeping her sight fixed on the boy.
“Thank you,” Dubhe whispered, motioning for her son to come to her.
Without another word, Kage stumbled to Dubhe. She hugged him tightly and kept crying silently.
I searched the room, but there was not a trace of Harper.
Snapped, I punched in the last few commands and the project was stopped. Destroyed. No one else could command these nanites back. And the command was to self-degenerate that they would be self-metabolised and come out of the body through urine.
Gaelan snarled. “My daughter. Where is she?”
I looked at Aries. Why did you kill that kid?
I could not digest the fact that he had just killed a child who was barely a week old who was brain-washed.
Aries closed his eyes and opened. Cause... that child would die in my hand anyway.
What do you mean, Aries? I asked.
Qamar showed me all possible Fates Wu had. Even if we had taken her grown her up... she would...
She would what? I pressed.
She would end up killing our child, Aries said. That is the fate she had. Even if she was showered with our love, even if she had been next to you while you give birth to our child anywhere in the future, Wu would be the one to kill our child and her killing our child was not an accident.
His words froze me. I did not know if I had to be happy that I would get a chance of being a mother or Aries had killed our future child’s killer. If Wu was the one to do that... Aries would not be the one to kill her. It would be me. Or it would be both of us.
I don’t care if you hate me now, he said. I may be biased, but the fate Qamar writes is never wrong. No matter what.
I gulped. I did not know what to feel anymore. Should I be happy that we had won? Should I be frustrated that Melantha escaped or should I feel disgusted to allow my Soul-Bound to kill a child?
To be honest, I was drained. So drained that I did not want to deal with any emotions now.
While Gaelan kept asked about his daughter, a howl outside announced that West Pack had a new Alpha.
**********
War had taken its toll on everything and everybody. Everyone was the same, yet not. It changed us in ways that one would never know unless they were the victims.
I plucked a grass blade and sighed as I stared at a new dawn. Mist curled around me and dewdrops clung to my skin. The war was over yesterday when Cain had ripped Ethan’s head from his body.
Yet the spoils of war reminded us of what happened.
Funerals had to be arranged and injured had to be cured. To say the hospital was overcrowding would be an understatement. Nash was finally given the funeral he deserved.
I took in a deep breath. The air was clear, yet it had the metallic tinge of blood and death lingering in them. For the first time in my life, I did not have the need to wear a coat or a sweater to bear the chillness. Apparently, being a pulsar gave immunity against them. While they called it immunity, I called it a mal-function of my thermal receptors.
The last stars of yesterday left. Alioth, Saiph and Megrez left taking Gaelan as their prisoner. But he did say that his daughter was still roaming the earth and she had left Harper’s hold. He went as far as to say how he would get his daughter back as if she was a thing.
The possessiveness of Gaelan did make the Warriors fear the girl. Normally Gaelan’s maternal race did not foster their children and Gaelan who had taken after his mother would be the same. If he was obsessed with his daughter, she must have some hidden power he was searching. But who was she?
Whoever she was, I just hoped her father would never find her. Who knew what he was planning for her?
Only when the three stars were about to leave did we realise that Nira and Dubhe had left with Kage. While Megrez wanted to track them, Aries forbade her to. Dubhe was on her own path. Kage living was not a problem. Kage had two paths and he could choose what to walk on. We just hoped Dubhe would grow him up with affection rather than malicious intent.
“Alpha Lyra?” a familiar voice called me.
I turned to see Alpha Charles standing there, shuffling his feet.
Pain pierced my heart. This male had done nothing wrong, yet he had to see his mate die before him as she defended him from Harper.
“Yes, Alpha Charles?” I asked, getting up.
He gave me a thin smile. “You can drop the title.” He then took a chain from a pocket. “Violet wanted me to give this to you.”
It was that chain with the pendant. A piece of key that might release Luna. I took the chain.
“Thank you, Charles,” I said, pocketing the chain.
As long as it was in my possession, nothing would happen to it.
He shrugged. “So... who is the next Alpha?”
“Cain,” I said without hesitation.
He shook his head. “Cain did kill my son. But... you were the Alpha who led the war. You have every right to the title as your brother does.”
I shook my head. “Nah. I am a pulsar, a celestial being. I cannot be tangled in the affairs of earth. I have to surrender my title.”
Nodding, Charles left, giving me a brief hug. After the old Alpha left, Aries walked up to me.
“How are you feeling?” he asked.
I shrugged and moved into his embrace. “Nothing. I don’t want to feel anything other than what I am feeling at this second. Just this for now. Worry about other things later.”
Aries chuckled. “You’re not mad at me for killing Wu?”
I pursed my lips. If... if it was her fate to kill... our c-child, no matter what, I don’t know what to say.
I hope you will forgive me one day, he said.
I wish there had been another way, I said, burying my face in his chest.
I asked Qamar all the possibilities, he said. Every one of them. Only after that, I gave her the killing blow.
You killed Wu because of that, I said. Why did others kill the other two?
Qamar must have shown them their fates with that hybrid, Aries said.
Then... then why did Megrez let Kage go free? I asked.
I... I don’t know, he said, hugging me tighter. Perhaps she saw that the fate she had with him had two paths.
We stayed in each other’s embrace for quite some time. The sun rose against the gloomy sky and the day tried to do its job. But the mark of war had left its impact.
They called me. Varian and Miguel. I was surprised they even let me take this much time for myself.
“Miguel and Varian are calling me,” I mumbled.
Aries caressed my head. “Then let’s go.”
“Should we?”
“We should,” he said. “What are you going to do about your pack?”
I sighed. “I don’t know. Hardly eight are there in my pack. Not to mention, Sam found his mate and he is transferring packs.”
Aries frowned. “Don’t tell me.”
I nodded. “Sam is Eric’s mate. Since Eric happens to be an Alpha, Sam is leaving with him.”
Aries nodded. “So... merging your pack with West Pack?”
I gave him a wry smile. “I bet this pack’s fate was to be led by a Black or a Throne.”
With that, we left for the meeting.
The place where the meeting was held was the place where I was banished. I don’t know why the Elders of West pack chose this place, but if their aim was to make me feel anxious, they were winning.
But I pulled that no-nonsense face and walked on the podium. Had Ethan not rejected me, I would have walked on this podium for various reasons, but walking on it because I was the Alpha who led the war against this pack and won was a whole new level.
On the podium stood, Taurus, Cain, Livvia, Rhaze and Kaina.
Seeing me, Cain gave me a sheepish smile which I could not help but return. When all this was over, I just wanted to hit him hard on his head. Just once.
But looking at him, I knew who he was. In the past.
Taurus cleared his throat. “Alpha Lyra Throne and Alpha Cain Black. What conclusion have you come to?”
Before Cain could open his mouth, I interfered. “I am no longer an Alpha. I am a celestial being, mated to a Warrior. I can no longer be an Alpha. I would like to ask Alpha Cain Black if he could accept my pack members into his?”
Cain’s eyes widened. “Y-You’re not going to be Alpha?”
I smirked at him. Only if he remembered who he was himself. “What? Luna did not tell that to you?”
He scowled. “She did not.”
Rhaze hit him on his head. When he protested, she smiled. “That was relieving. But seriously, Cain! Lyra is a star... or something similar to it. She can’t be an Alpha. Don’t make it hard on her.”
Cain looked at me with those eyes he used to give me when I was little to get away with things. If he thought those eyes were going to work on me today, he was wrong.
I shook my head. “Sorry, Cain.”
He then glared at my Soul-Bound. “If you hurt her, trust me, whatever worse you have seen in your life would be nothing. She may be a pulsar, daughter of Chaos, born in the Abyss. But she is still Lyra Throne, my sister.”
I resisted the urge to roll me eyes. He was the same back then.
Aries gave him a grin. “You think I will let anything happen to her?”
Cain shrugged. “Who knows what will happen in the future? Even if I die, I will find a way to hurt you if you hurt my sister.”
Aries nodded. “I believe in that.”
“Good,” Cain said. Then he glanced at Liv. “What do you say, love? Want to be the Alpha?”
The female whom I knew by another name stood there next to her Soul-Bound. When did Cosmos forgive the pair and gave them another chance at life?
An elder snorted. “Why are you asking her, boy? It’s your wish.”
Cain gave that elder a stink eye. “She is the one who shares my bed. My life. Of course, she has a say in it. If she does not want to be, I won’t be.”
Livvia chuckled lightly. “You will make an amazing Alpha Cain.”
Cain returned her smile. “You will be an amazing Alpha, Liv.”
Aries held my hands tighter. I can see why.
See what? I asked.
Why Luna assigned Cain of all people the job to look after you, he said.
I realised that right now.
Aries said, Realised that he is one of the Warrior who represented space before Cosmos wielded her Soul-Cleaving weapon on them both?
I nodded. I got my memories when we were running through the West pack. I remember who these two are.
Aries smirked. Cain’s soul is Canis’. Or in other words, Cain was Canis in his past life. And Livvia is his Soul-Bound, Tucana. There can be no other reason why Cain is so powerful. He is born as a wolf. But after his time on earth, he will be a star again.
Looking at Cain who was joking with Taurus at ease, it was not hard for me to imagine him as a Warrior.
I hope they will choose to be who they are again. And... do you think Taurus knows this?
Since Taurus’ memory is taken, like mine was, Aries said. He can’t recognise Canis. But once he gets his memory back, I bet he will recognise who Cain is.
Hopefully.
Aries nodded. Yes. A Warrior whose soul has tasted death. I will always fear this male. If he says he will be reborn to kill me, I trust him to do that.
I laughed. You are afraid of someone.
Of many, he defended. Of Sage, of your brother, of Cosmos when she is pissed off, of many people. Even you when you’re mad.
I gave him a sideways glare.
“But...” Cain began. “I will be the Alpha, but Lyra has to choose my rankers.”
“That’s all?” I asked. “That’s too easy.”
Cain stood next to his mate. “Seems like you already have the right people in your mind.”
“Rhaze-”
“Hold it!” my sister shouted. “I am leaving West Pack with my mate to explore the neutral lands.”
I blinked at her. “Huh?”
Rhaze gave Kaina a sweet smile and then gave me a guilty smile. “I have been thinking about it. If I become the Beta, then Kaina would be a Beta... it clashes. A lot. For now, both of us are healing we just need a lot of alone time together. If we want to be a part of a pack, we can join West pack any day. Not to mention, we... are going to take a pledge under Silas so that we come directly under Royal’s command.”
I gazed deeply into my sister’s eyes before she ducked her head. Kaina is marked.
I know, I said.
Rhaze shook her head. Marked by Chandra as her Huntress. Kaina has a lot of work to do and I am going to assist her.
Kaina is a Huntress? I asked, unable to keep the shock from my face.
Rhaze nodded. I will tell others later. Just let it go for now, nah?
I could not believe it, but seeing the strength behind Kaina’s magic, I hardly doubted. Kaina would make one amazing Huntress.
“So... the Beta is going to be someone who knows the pack well,” I said, after a few seconds. Glancing where Reece and Mike stood, I jerked my head towards them. “Reece and Mike are the Beta pair of West pack.”
Cain nodded. “Good choice.”
“Delta...” I trailed off, looking at the mischievous male who could not keep his hands to himself. “Is Miguel and Aspen. Aspen has connections and Miguel’s training is hard. Within a year, West Pack would have the strongest force if he trains.”
Cain motioned Miguel to come up. After the Phoenix shifter came up with Aspen Ruiz, Cain offered him a hand. “Can’t wait to work with you.”
Miguel smiled and shook hands but then linked me. You know when I once said, I wish I had spoken with him and you said you can speak with him for the rest of your life... I did not expect you to go through it.
I smirked. “Gamma...”
My eyes scanned the crowd. Although Livvia’s parents were still alive, I owed it to one person to have a title even if he did not want it.
“Varian Rykar,” I announced.
Varian’s eyes widened.
Varian? Aries asked. Not anything against him, but why?
I wanted to name him the Alpha of my pack in the first place, I said. But then... the packs merged and he is still grieving. This rank will give him power as well as time for him to heal with Aislynn. Bonus, he was the Gamma of Winter pack. No one can be a better Gamma.
An elder shouted, “Why all from your pack, Lyra? This is West pack. We can agree with the Beta but not your choice of Delta and Gamma.”
I folded my arms. “Is that so?”
While a few elders backed off, a few nodded.
I shrugged. “Okay. Bring your candidates. If they can win against mine, I will withdraw.”
They gulped. All of them saw how these two fought. They had been a nightmare to West Pack. Just because we had agreed to not kill anyone, they held back. Had that order not been given, they would have wrecked more chaos in this land.
After my declaration, no one challenged them.
The pack was satisfied with the Rankers. Or at least that was what they said.
“So...” Liv came up to me. I still could not wrap my mind around the fact that Liv was my sister-in-law and Raoul, my nephew. “Where are you going to go? Taurus is leaving for Draco and what about you and Aries?”
I glanced at Aries who was talking with Taurus and Cain. I smiled. “Harper began that project, right? I spoke with Aspen. Apparently, that project has been going on undercover for a long time. Aspen’s ex-mate had been involved. So... Aries and I are going to dig out the ones who are doing this. Hopefully trying to put a stop to this.”
Liv nodded. “Hopefully.”
I sighed. “Do... you think it will ever come back to normal?”
Liv took in a deep breath. “Not until the Royals returned. Until then, we have to hold on.”
Cain then turned to give his mate a smile and when his gaze caught mine, my lips curled. One could hold on if they were surrounded by the people they loved.
Cain winked at me and I showed him my fist. I still had to hit him hard on his head.
