Aresbury

Chapter 1 The Beginning

My name is Kelya Rhodes daughter of the famous Ryker Rhodes and Marsha Rhodes. Im 20 years old I have long crimson red hair, pale skin, and a thin body. I live in my college dorm room, in the city of Sliyphia, the year is 2030. Sliyphia was named after the brave hero who fought against the dragons. Her statue is placed in the center of the city. Our city is a futuristic society, flying cars, jet packs, hover boards, and computer interfaces you name it we probably invented it.

Our city’s ruler is President Breckett his office building scrapes into the sky, in front of it stands a large stone wall, engraved with names of men and women that died fighting in the army. It was considered a honor to die fighting, most of my family served in the army ever since the beginning of Aresbury. I walked to my class were the professor was waiting for me.

“Hello Ms. Rhodes got a special treat for today’s lesson.” He said. I sat down next to a skinny tall boy who was sleeping. I tapped him on the shoulder and he awoke with a start.

“Hun? Just five more minutes!” The professor glared at him as he slumped back into his desk when the professor tapped his pencil and shouted.

“MR. Yoder!” He awoke with a start and stared at the professor with fear, the professor glared up at him then sighed.

“Bryce.” I whispered, glaring at him.

“What? I swear it’s not my fault.” He replied sheepishly blushing. Bryce was a thin tall boy with pale skin, black messy hair, and a small mustache. The professor was looking down at the table where a cloth was covering something.

“Today class we are going to be looking at-” He paused then threw the cloth aside. “Dragon Weapons.” The class stared down with wonder.

“Now unfortunately we couldn’t borrow soldiers gear. But they did provide us with one single blaster. So the assignment today is to try to replicate the lazer blades in the army, by using this blaster.”

I rushed down the steps to observe the blaster, it was black with a red glow accent. Immediately I grabbed some parts and rushed back to my seat, I got to work placing part after part into place wiring the mainframe chip. Bryce was welding, a large mask was on his face the sparks leap towards me. I finished piecing together the final piece immediately the hilt started glowing. The professor walked up and grabbed my blade. He placed it upwards then turned to us and said.

“Now to make sure a lazer blade works you have to see if it cuts trough a brick.” He pressed a button, a triangular blade formed from the hilt. It hummed as it glowed brightly, the professor threw a brick towards the blade, a loud noise was heard as the brick went through the blade. Smoke filled the classroom, when it cleared the blade I had built was destroyed, and a sliced brick laid on the floor.

“Well done Ms. Rhodes. Almost exactly like the ones they use in the army.” When class was over I saw that I had a voicemail from my mom. I pressed dial and my mom said.

“Hey honey if your not to busy your father would like you to come to the apartment. To talk to you about something.”

“Sure be there soon, I love you bye.” I replied, then turned to Bryce.

“Whats wrong?” He asked.

“Nothing just have to go back to the apartment.” I replied.

"Oh uh. Keyla I was wondering if you would want to. You know hang out... I mean you don't have to if you don't want to." He mumbled.

"Bryce I would love to. Just don't sleep in ok. See ya soon.” I rushed out of the doors and hopped into my blue car. I pressed a button and the wheels turned upwards shooting me into the crisp blue sky. Humanity built these to fly like dragons, and to show that we can prosper and survive. The roof pulled down and the crisp summer air blew my hair in the wind. As I was flying I saw over the large metal wall towering over the city, below was families saying goodbye to their sons, daughters, husbands, wives going to fight in the army. In the distance were millions of cities. Skyscrapers towered in front of me, I saw my parents apartment and docked my car. I got out and opened the door my mother rushed up to embrace me, my father was sitting on the couch looking up at me. My father was 34 years old, he was a tall muscular man, with a grey beard, scars covering his body, and he was missing his right arm. My mother was 32 years old, she was thin, had long crimson red hair, and had a single scar on her leg.

My father walked up to me and hugged me with one arm.

“Honey it’s good to see you. We need to talk.” He said.

“Sure, whats it about?” I replied.

“You know the army is recruiting.” He said.

“Dad we been ove-”

“Honey their are men and women fighting out there defending this kingdom. The army needs all the help they can get.” He replied.

“Im sorry I know everyone in this family fought, but I can’t do what you guys did. I just can't.” I replied.

“All right-” He paused then looked up at my mother concerned, and said. “The army want me to re-enlist-”

“WHAT! No dad you can’t. you-” I roared, glaring at him.

“The dragons have destroyed another town it wont be long before they reach here.” My mother replied.

“But they have soldiers fighting, you’ve done your service. You have risked your life too many times!” I shouted. “If you go you’ll die!” He looked at me with sad eyes then shouted.

“Then ill die a hero. That is the greatest honor than do nothing, and besides i’m doing it one way or another!” His face was red with fury, tears starting to form in my eyes.

“Then don’t expect me to be there when you do!” I shouted tears now streaming down my face. I didn’t dare turn around I ran out of the door and jumped into my car, flying far away into the sky. I got back to the college and hopped out and went into my dorm room and slammed the door. I fell onto the bed sobbing, my pocket buzzed and I saw a message from my mom. I immediately shoved it back into my pocket, and kept sobbing. I heard a knock on the door, then a soft voice that said.

“Can I come in.” I didn’t move then I looked up to see Bryce standing above me, I got up and looked at him sobbing, I embraced him tightly.

“Whats wrong?” He asked.

“My father is joining the army! You know him Bryce if he takes another hit he’s-”

“Hey it will be alright. I'm here for you Keyla ok.” He replied. That day my father left to join the army. Every day since then I worried begging that he would be alright. I barley could focus on class, because I could not stop fearing the worst. One week later I woke up and opened my door to see the holo paper on the floor. I picked it up and turned it on to my horror the headline reads.

“THE FAMOUS RYKER RHODES HAS BEEN KILLED IN COMBAT.” Below an article reads.

“Marsha Rhodes wife of Ryker Rhodes was notified that at approximately 12:00 am Ryker Rhodes was Killed in combat, this took a heavy blow to her. Ryker Rhodes died a hero though, so we thank him for his service and sacrifice.” I dropped the holo paper to the ground, and fell onto my knees, sobbing uncontrollably, shouting.

“Dad im so sorry! I should have seen you off!” Then I wiped my tears and rushed to my car, I heard Bryce shout.

"Keyla where are you going! Keyla!"

I flew through the sky at top speed towards a large skyscraper. I landed the car and got out standing in front of me was the wall of names, I skimmed them and then saw etched in the middle.

“Ryker Rhodes”

I touched the wall and saw beneath were flowers. I walked into the large golden doors, and walked up to a man sitting at a counter dressed in a suit.

“Can I help you?” He asked.

“Yeah, How can I kill those son of a bitches!” I replied.
